Setzer, after reading your story, I checked the card account I used. Nothing so far, but it persuaded me to call the company and get a new card.

Hope everything in fixing the issue goes smoothly. I had a time where my bank called me about some charges, only to find that my card number had been stolen. Thankfully, they fixed it pretty quickly.

I hope that's just unfortunate coincidence, Setzer, and not evidence that not only have thieves stolen cc data from PSN (which was unconfirmed earlier, though we know now that SOE has definitely had cc's stolen) but that they've decrypted it as well. Good luck.

So DC Universe Online will be pretty much dead in the water now, huh?

Not as long as you get a free Batman mask out of it.

Sony Online Entertainment plans to give all DC Universe Online players a free month and "Batman-Inspired mask" as compensation for the current outage. The company asked players on the game's Facebook page to bear with them as "the complexities of the subscription server dictate how and when this will be available" and that the company will be releasing "more information this week."

The outage is part of the overall PlayStation Network issue that resulted in SOE announcing earlier this week that 12,700 credit card numbers were taken and 24.6 million accounts were compromised. So, yeah, a free month and a virtual hat seems like a good start to an apology.

BTW : Another Joystiq article indicates that the free month of Playstation Plus will be in addition to the outage time we lost. For me, that's much more satisfactory. I was pretty glad to hear that, now that we're going on a month of outage.

I started a thread with my story in the tech forum. Someone in Australia is using my name and email for purchases the last several days. I hadn't purchased anything on PSN in almost a year and my CC associated with it exp. But this is still very troubling. My other accounts appear fine right now.

What do you mean by expired? The date expired or the card/# expired and you were issued a new card/#? If it was just the date that expired, most places will still run it as CC companies will keep the account # the same and just extend the date by 2-3 years.

I got a new card/# about a month before this went down. Despite that I've been checking the account every couple of days as a precaution but haven't seen anything unusual.

As frustrated as I was at my wife for losing our credit card in March, I'm now very happy we had to get ours replaced... I still check my account every few days though.

It was replaced with a new number for that account.

Looks like the PSN is coming back online. I haven't completely logged in yet but I no longer got the "down for maintenance" message. Which is good, cause I've been wanting to download Castlevania Reverie since the 26th when it went down.

Even when it comes back online, I don't think the store will be up yet. In any case, I want to finally link Portal 2 to Steam so I'm glad I'll be able to do that.

Yeah, the store won't be up until later on. I wonder if we'll be able to redeem codes though? I'm planning on getting the MK Tournament edition that comes with the Ermac retro costume. I'm tired of playing fighting games with the PS3 controller.

If you don't want to risk having your cc stored parallel to all your personal information, I'll be happy to store it on my account for you.

Wow, definitely seems like sony is going above and beyond on this one. I'm glad to see them taking steps to make it right for everyone.

It's sad that that's not considered "the least they could do".

I realize they don't have to do anything and maybe they wouldn't if they weren't facing a multitude of lawsuits and government inquiries. I'm just not prepared to thank them for covering their own ass after the fact.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Encryption? We don't need no stinkin' encryption.

What exactly is it you want from them? There is only so much they can do. Are you expecting them to supply some hookers or something?

You're the one that called it above and beyond. I was merely pointing out that I would have expected nothing less than that. Don't think they're doing it as a favor to any of us. They're doing it so they can say the class action lawsuit(s) should be thrown out because they offered this to you* and you* chose not to take it. It's a CYA move.

I'm certainly not going to start saying "good job!" to them now.

*Proverbial "you".

I mean at what point can you actually forgive a mistake that many, many security firms said could happen to any company online. Sure it may not have been handled the best, but that's the past. All they can do now is try to make it right.

I think it's just perception really. Having a background in computers I can't blame them completely for what happened. All it takes is 1 hole in millions of lines of code to allow this to happen. They can't be expected to go through the source of every network program they run looking for them. I don't think I've seen other companies offer anything for getting hacked. Didn't 360 get hacked a few years ago? If it's the same time that live went down over christmas then all you got was a free game that from what I hear no one would have paid for anyways because it sucked.

So maybe I mean above and beyond in the sense that they are doing far more than most companies would do in a similar situation.

I think the comp year of this service is pretty standard when a high-profile company leaks your info. A while back the Boston Globe lost all their subscribers cc info. And I got a year of one of those services. This Sony situation reminds me more of the TJX hack, not sure what those customers got. I'm satisfied with what they're offering.

I'll be getting my cards at Target, but I share the sentiment.
