Well, that is what Playstation does.

I wonder if this will change how Sony (and N and MS) treats online purchases in the future. I could see a greater leaning on pre-paid codes now, even if it is less convenient for the users.

I'm glad I don't have my cc info in any gaming company's databanks.

I don't remember which card I used. Damn it. And I can't access my account to check what card I used, can I? Fucking Sony.

Just pointing out the username and password part because, as the blog post stated, people may reuse those in other places. I would hope they at least encrypted the passwords and that they're just afraid someone might crack it, but who knows?

I hope they clarify that specific detail.

i've never bought anything from PSN, so they don't have my CC info. but it's pathetic that hackers could get into their system and take that information.

And hopefully they encrypted with a scheme that isn't identical to the private key that Kevin Butler played Battleship with.

I called my credit card company and told 'em about the situation. They've closed my old account and are issuing me a card with a new number. It's not my main card, so it shouldn't be too much of a pain in the ass, and I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Also, I'll probably start using those PSN cards that Amazon has available for download in the future instead of giving Sony my credit card info. What a mess...

if you keep your emails, look for a receipt for adding funds to your wallet. it tells you the last 4 digits.

Why are they just putting this up on their blog? Why aren't they emailing us? Fuck that, why aren't they CALLING everybody?

I kind of don't care about name/address info being stolen, but I DO care about the $50 I had in PSN funds and 100s of $$ of DLC that I have purchased. I really hope this forces Sony to allow us the option of getting our purchases transferred onto a physical disc for outages and screw ups like these.

Thanks, Sony! Now I get to do some fun and exciting things tonight, like cancel my credit card, file a fraud alert with the credit bureaus, get some free credit reports, and check all of my other credit cards for fraudulent activity. Awesome.

In unrelated news, I am boycotting Sony products for the foreseeable future.

If it makes you feel any better they only knew about it since last week.

Hey, I wonder what will be in the PSN store update later today. Hope they put some good stuff on sale and maybe a sweet PS+ freebie or two. Can't wait to make some more purchases tonight! Who's with me?

If only there was some way to send us mail electronically...then they could have notified us almost immediately! Failing that, they could hire some people whose job it is to relate to the public. Maybe they can implement these radical plans within the next two years or so.

because they are trying to sweep it under the table. they obviously have some public relations firms helping them out with this.

It's pretty ridiculous it's taken them almost a week to announce that info may have been hacked but I'm not terribly worried. I changed my email passwords and passwords for most of the accounts I use online associated with that and will if necessary have my CC cancelled and a new one issued. I don't see how the risk for identity theft is really any higher than if someone stole a piece of mail with your address name etc on it. My CC company is really good so if any suspect charges arise in the interim on that card I'm sure they'll be taken care of.

Sony should make a deal with lifelock to provide at least a free year of service

Well to be fair, if there is in fact info that has been stolen on a large scale, they probably wanted to make sure all of the official announcement wording was carefully written, what with the class action lawsuit it would be featured in and all.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Software bugs? We don't need no software bugs

I informed both my brother and nephew of the intrusion today. Neither has used their PS3s in the last couple of weeks and were completely unaware that their information may have been compromised. Prior to the intrusion, I was getting sometime multiple daily e-mails from Sony about sales or new releases on the PSN... since the intrusion, I haven't received a single e-mail from them. Way to keep your costumers that may not read Kotaku (or whatever) that they're potentially going to be victims of identity theft.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Software bugs? We don't need no software bugs

Maybe Sony couldn't access that information with the network down? We don't know their inner workings. They aren't known for their security. Microsoft with all their OS/networking experience (for better or worse) at least has a much better footing on that right out of the gate.

You can be assured they're doing their own emergency tests and break-in attempts to make sure it doesn't happen to them as we speak.
