The next-generation Xbox—the one that will follow the still-popular Xbox 360—will run multiple games at once, require game installations, and will only work when a much-improved version of the popular but divisive Kinect sensor array is plugged in, according to a source who says he has access to development hardware.

Damn. Even if the used games thing turns out to be hot air, this may be a killer for me. My setup is such that the kinect can only see me from the shoulders up from my normal sitting position. If they make it so the kinect HAS to be able to track you to play regular games, that's likely another deal killer for me.

I have a projector setup with the components in the back of the room. First, standing in front of the projector for Kinect is no good. Second I'm not running a cable for the damn thing just to meet the required connection to run.

Curious, I play my X360 from bed, there's no way a Kinect would even begin to work in my case.

But is that what this is saying? It says to me that there will be a NEW and BETTER Kinect coming out so it could actually solve both of your issues. I know for me I had to get some secondary lighting for me to have the Kinect work at I would say 80-85% efficiency. Perhaps a new one will solve a lot of the issues that many of us with less than optimal environments have for it.

Unless it's wireless and/or you can plug it in and shove it in a drawer/toss it behind the media center in the tangle of wires, it solves nothing. Even if it is wireless, if you stand in front of a projector it obscures the image.
But yeah, for most people with projector setups a Kinect is probably never going to work for them. |

Short throw projector would work, but that was out of the budget range when I bought mine.

So... when do you think Microsoft will announce the new console? Before E3?

reading some reactions of the Big Sony Surprise...I'm betting that MS will pull off one far better. And at least they'll show a console and not just the controller.

re: The official Xbox 360 thread - the console of choice on nuclear submarines
Does seeing a console mean anything to anyone? I don't interact with that at all. Controller, features, and functions, sure - but I don't care about the main unit at all.

re: The official Xbox 360 thread - the console of choice on nuclear submarines
Seeing hardware at least lets you know its coming sooner rather than later.

re: The official Xbox 360 thread - the console of choice on nuclear submarines
They could easily prototype a box, paint it glossy black and play a video as if it's a real working unit. I'd like to see the console too -- even though it means nothing in the grand scheme of things. Just give me specs, release dates and cost so I can give you my money.

re: The official Xbox 360 thread - the console of choice on nuclear submarines
 A release date lets me know it's coming. Specs are out there, as is the PS4 thread ;)

The xbox presentation will probably be similar to the ps4 announcement: showing off a bunch of features that most people won't use. I still expect the xbox conference to be better, though. Hopefully they keep it shorter.
Both microsoft and sony are going to have struggles selling consoles, I expect. |

Both microsoft and sony are going to have struggles selling consoles, I expect. I do think MS is going to focus on that god-forsaken Kinect thing way too much though. I can see 5 minutes on the core power of the console and 55 minutes about integrating Kinect into your daily life --- and fuck that. |
re: The official Xbox 360 thread - the console of choice on nuclear submarines
I know reading several sites that with Sony announcing the "8 gigs of GDDR5" is a really big deal. I'm wondering if MS will counter along the same lines , up the ante in the ram or do something different to get one leg up spec wise?

Disagree. I think both will sell better than the Wii U.
At $499+, they won't fly off shelves. |

I unfortunately agree. All I really am looking for from the next Xbox is better graphics, faster load times, maybe some new Xbox Live Features (Sony's livecasting/uploading to YouTube feature is really a great idea) and to use a controller for everything.

Kinect has been worth it to me for the voice commands alone.
My daughter has gotten a ton of use out of the Doublefine Kinect games as well. |
re: The official Xbox 360 thread - the console of choice on nuclear submarines
Does everyone here that hates Kinect cringe when they see that "Better with Kinect" banner on those games where the features are completely optional? Just curious how far the hatred for this add on extends.
