It won't go through a 6th time. At least it wouldn't for me. You can get to the submit screen but it won't go.

Well I got in for 4 for me and 4 for my son's account. I just signed him up for a free month this weekend so now he has until October.
I wish they had a family plan for just 2 accounts and not the 4. I also wish they would allow you to associate your gamer tag with more than one console. We have 2 that I play on, living room and the computer room, and I hate having to drag the flash drive around with me.

More advanced networking capabilities between multiple consoles... one of my major wants for a dash update or for the next console.

Looks like the deal has been changed to "Buy 3 Months, Get 1 Free". I did manage to get in four months before they updated it.

Missed it as well. Every day I don't check dvdtalk I miss at least one deal I would have jumped on.

Well, spectacular. Last week, I called Xbox support to inquire why I couldn't sync my wireless headset with my new (2nd) 360. I was told it was a failure of the out-of-warranty headset and I needed to buy another one (or a Turtle Beach one he told me). But I couldn't get my wired one to work very well either. Today I tried to talk to my buddy and it got really garbled. Tried a brand new spare headset, same result. On a whim, I moved my profile and the older wired headset over to the old phat 360. Works fine. Synced the wireless headset to the old console; it worked too. So somehow my brand new 360 doesn't transmit voice. FABULOUS. And of course the call center is closed. Will have to make some inquiries in the AM, but looks like I'm sending this baby back.

So, if you seen my hassle in the LA NOIRE thread, you might realize I'm going to probably end up buying a new XBOX.
I have a few questions about the new slims.
1.) Are they the most reliable consoles yet?
2.) Can you do the memory transfer with a USB stick from the old console to the new one?
3.) Can you use the non-slim component (Red/Green/Blue) cable with the slim console?
At the very least, it looks like I can trade in my current console before it completely dies for $75 credit at Best Buy.
Hopefully though, Rockstar will confirm my issue is on their end and I won't have to spend a dime.

Answers to your questions :
1) Some might say yes now. They're better, but as my post above indicates, they're not flawless
2) Yes you can, but it might take a while. Everything has to be transferred a'la carte and there's only 16 GB max on the USB drives. Might end up easier to redownload whatever you can.
3) Yes, the old AV port is still on there, but if you still don't have a TV with an HDMI input, it might be time for a new TV.

IIRC, there are also some saves that won't move or copy, yet I think the cable route gets around that somehow.

You may want to hold off on paying for one out of pocket, just in case: http://uk.kotaku.com/5802935/does-th...older-consoles
We've just had a look at a verified email, sent from Xbox LIVE customer support, claiming that a recent update provided to Xbox LIVE beta testers is preventing "a very small number of Xbox 360 owners from playing retail discs".
The email, which was verified via this twitter post from Xbox Support, offered the user in question a new Xbox 360 in response and a free year's subscription to Xbox LIVE.
"Checking my e-mail earlier today," said Avery Penn, "I found a rather interesting message from Xbox Customer Support, saying that a software update is stopping some Xbox 360s from reading game discs.
"Saying they were able to detect this issue over Xbox Live, Microsoft went on to say that, after jumping through all the necessary hoops, they'd send me a brand new Xbox 360 S and a year's free Xbox Live. At this point, my jaw hit the floor."
According to Avery, his 360 was still playing discs at the time the email was sent and, just for reference, his console was 60GB Pro from 2009.
The email was most likely referring to the Xbox LIVE update which is being phased in between May 19 and May 30 – an update which reflashes the DVD drives to a new stock firmware, and adds support for new XGD3 disk format. It's this update that allows an extra GB of usable storage on game discs.
That would most likely mean that the games Avery's Xbox 360 wouldn't be able to read haven't even been released yet – explaining why his 360 could still read currently available game discs.
We've contacted Microsoft for a response on the issue, which we're currently awaiting – and we'll update the story accordingly. In spite of the obvious issues, which may affect a good number of Xbox 360 users, we're impressed by the pre-emptive work of Xbox's Customer Support – as was Avery, who was seemingly happy with the situation.
If Microsoft continue to pre-emptively solve these issues, then more power to them, but problems may arise if users find themselves unable to play new games released in the future.
More news as we get it.

I just updated my old original release (and 2 RROD replacements) console for a new 4GB unit - I wanted the flat black and wanted to save $100. I took my old 120GB HDD and put it in the new unit. I did buy a HDD case on ebay for $9 to store it for a better fit and protection. I have my gamer id on a flash drive because I still use my old unit in another room to play sometimes.

There's no way MS will give everyone affected a new console. I expect a lot of hoop jumping for the mass effected and in the end, they'll have to send the console in for a new drive.

From Major Nelson:
Still no clear for me.
Clarification time! The console replacement plan that is the subject of some of today’s headlines is related to a previous update, NOT the system update that has been in public beta and will be deployed shortly.
The new disc format that is part of the beta has been rigorously tested across all Xbox 360 models and there are no known compatibility issues.
Hope that clears a few things up.

I guess they don't want people to start calling saying that they can't play a new game and want a replacement.
Hmm let me try L.A. Noire in my Xbox 360 Arcade (non-beta)...

New dash is beginning to roll out today: http://majornelson.com/2011/05/19/ne...functionality/
I am happy to announce that, as a part of a new Xbox 360 System Update, we’re expanding our integration with PayPal to allow U.S. and international Xbox LIVE users to make purchases on their Xbox 360 consoles with their PayPal accounts.* Once you’ve linked your PayPal account to your Xbox LIVE account on Xbox.com, you’ll be off and running to use it as a billing option, allowing you to buy content such as Microsoft Points, Xbox LIVE Gold subscriptions and Games on Demand titles.
We are rolling out the Xbox 360 System Update gradually to all Xbox LIVE users starting today and throughout the next couple weeks to ensure a high quality deployment. Just like any other update to our service, you will know you’ve received it when you turn on your Xbox 360 console, connect to Xbox LIVE and receive a notification to download the update. It’s important to note that it may take a few days to make its way around the globe. Thanks for your patience if you don’t get it right away!
This particular update will also bring an auto-standby feature that places your console on standby if it’s idle for more than one hour, helping to reduce power consumption. This feature will be automatically enabled after you download the update. You can change this setting in the System Settings on your console.
Finally, thank you to all who participated in the preview program for this Xbox 360 System Update. Your contributions helped us prepare for the updated Xbox 360 disc format capability that comes with this release.

Yeah, I got the update when I signed in first thing this morning.
Despite what Major Nelson's info says, the Auto-Off option is Disabled by default after the update, at least for me. It also has "after 1 hour" and "after 6 hours" options.
