Dashboard Update - May 19th. Adds Paypal as a direct payment option

Avatar Kinect following on May 27th.

http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/09/so...9-adds-paypal/

Even before that new app smell has worn off from Hulu Plus, Microsoft will launch its annual spring update for the Xbox 360 Dashboard. Images sent to Joystiq by a Microsoft tech support employee reveal that the next Dashboard update will begin rolling out on May 19.

According to the documents, the update will be distributed in six separate waves between May 19 and May 30 "to ensure a high quality deployment." Additionally, while not technically part of the automatic update, Avatar Kinect is listed for a May 27 arrival as a separate download.

Aside from offering support for the new Microsoft disc format -- which will "be used in future game titles releasing later in 2011" -- the spring system update will enable PayPal support, extending the payment option "to new international markets." PayPal will be "the only user facing feature" of the update.

Microsoft had yet to respond to request for comment as of publishing.
As long as they ask for the Paypal password with each transaction, this should go a long way to assuage fears of CC info being stored on remote systems. Very bad timing for Sony on that.

What is Avatar Kinect? I thought you could already dress up your avatar with Kinect.

That's that pointless Avatar chat room they demoed at CES in January. You know, where you* can talk about the latest Glee and publish the video to Facebook.

*NOT the Proverbial "you". I mean you, Corvin, since you're in love with that show and a giant Facebook whore.

Odds of the Microsoft E3 press conference highlighting this new addition via a thinly-veiled dig at Sony? I'll say 2:1.

I wouldn't take that bet. I really think they're above that. This isn't a simple goof. It's not something they're immune to. It would be in poor taste.

What is cnn referring to here in this article about the Skype acquisition:

The Xbox 360 already has a chat function. But gamers have largely been unimpressed, opting for other consoles like the PlayStation for multiplayer games that require real-time communication.
http://www.cnn.com/2011/TECH/web/05/...ex.html?hpt=C2

Isn't real-time communication one of the 360's strong suits?

You're questioning an organization that has nothing to do with games. Don't do that.

As I sent my friend the news to have him check his account as well, it occurred to me why the 5% rebate wasn't offered for May. Black Ops' DLC #2 came out May 3rd. No way were they going to give everyone that bought that a $1 back.

I was wondering why my points total was a bit higher today.

I got 240 points plus a bonus 100 points for April.

Well, that included the ports from the surveys and staying gold, so I didn't spend that much.

That being said, I do have over 20K MSP in my account right now. That's what happens when you buy all the Rock Band DLC every week.

It states I did this, but when I hit the done button I get an error page.

How many times have some of you been able to use it?

I did 5 so far... but I'm tempted to keep going.
