they didn't put much focus on it but they demo'd one game where a second player came up and Kinect/game automatically added their Avatar and made it split screen on the fly.

Re: Chuckd21's Project Natal thread. AKA Kinect
Any movement game with more than two players up and moving around at the same time is a recipe for disaster.

To be honest I'm not even sure there's enough depth in my living room the way it's set up now for Kinect to even work... and I'm not moving my entertainment center again.

I must say, though some UI with Kinect looks sick, the game videos they're featuring right now on the dashboard's Inside Xbox features gameplay footage with some of the lamest, most embarrassing flailing I've ever seen. Seriously, another motion-controlled bowling game? Not at all appealing to me so far.

And this is why it's going to fail. If people like us with money in hand that are ready and willing to try it out are on the fence because of price, then what's that say for everyone else?
Then they asked the price. I said around 150$ for the unit and 60$ for a game. And they quickly cooled their interest. They are sitting on a Wii with a couple controllers, balance board, Wii Fit, Sports, Resort, and Motion+ for the controllers. They also have a 360 (well technically my brother who lives with them still has the 360). They were not enticed at all to pay 150+60 a game when they get the same experience (in lower definition) on their Wii. Just one personal observation and not the least scientific I admit... But these were early Wii adopters and still play it weekly. They only do Wii Fit and bowling - but they play it every weekend together. If you can't interest that couple or me with a 5-year old than it makes me wonder about its success at that price. |

I'm not saying $150 is a bad price.
If they are trying to reach a mass-market audience (most of whom don't own a 360 already), then that is a huge investment. Even if you own a 360 already, do you really want to spend another $150 for motion controls? I think this thing will be nowhere near as successful as Microsoft would like it to be. I really want to play Dance Central, but I guess I'll have to wait until Kinect hits the bargain bin. |
Re: Chuckd21's Project Natal thread. AKA Kinect
Yeah, a huge factor for the Wii's success was it's relative low price and getting a new console with a game and motion controls for under $250. Here, $150, and you still have to get yourself a game and console - the typical casual will still opt for the all in one Wii, which is now $199.

Re: Chuckd21's Project Natal thread. AKA Kinect
I saw various demos of Kinect today on the show floor and the thing looks terrible. Pretty much everyone trying it out struggled with imprecise movements, whether it be navigating game menus or playing the actual games. I saw a tennis game that was dreadfuly bad watching the guy try and toss the ball up and serve. Plus, it seemed like every action had a weird lag/delay on screen where it would drop a few frames rather then say, a smooth swing of the tennis racket or jumping up in the mine cart thing. Kind of weird.

It was wireless interference.

Re: Chuckd21's Project Natal thread. AKA Kinect
I still wonder why anyone is surprised by this. I thought this thing looked terrible from day one, that Microsoft was wildly incorrect about what made the Wii successful (Nintendo name + cheap + Wii Sports) and playing Johnny-Come-Lately with expensive peripherals that no one has asked for is simply a poor decision.
Looks like they've completely missed with this thing. Oh well, as long as they keep making actual games I can ignore the Kinect. |
Re: Chuckd21's Project Natal thread. AKA Kinect
So if and when this thing doesn't catch on, will Microsoft stick with it or quickly abandon it? If they cut their losses and run, will they step up production on the next Xbox?
|
Re: Chuckd21's Project Natal thread. AKA Kinect
The original Xbox didn't catch on... and they kept at it.
The Vision Cam didn't catch on... and they abandoned it and developed nothing for it. |

Re: Chuckd21's Project Natal thread. AKA Kinect
I don't see how they are all that connected. I know they are hoping for a Wii style boost in sales, but if it bombs, I don't see it affecting the 360's lifespan.

Re: Chuckd21's Project Natal thread. AKA Kinect
I think the potential of Kinect lies in other applications aside from gaming. Watching the Zune demo was cool and I hope they have more to show on this front.
And pricing on this is outrageous. I think a much better price point is $99 with a game. $149 for just the peripheral is ridiculous. Who do they expect to buy this? |
