Chuckd21's Project Natal thread. AKA Kinect

What are people's impressions?

Frankly I'm blown away by it. The gaming possibilities are endless with this technology. This demo has been out for awhile, but what do you think about it?

Re: Project Natal

I'll hold off any expectations until I can try it or get reviews from people around here. There's no way it's going to be as revolutionary as they are proclaiming. I had an Eyetoy. Let's see how much better it is.

Re: Project Natal

If it's cheap enough I'll probably get it just to play around in the dashboard without a controller. Jumping around like a loon doesn't sound appealing.

Re: Project Natal

While that is cool I'm skeptical on whether it will be anywhere near what we've seen in this video. We'll see, but I highly doubt it will be like this.

Re: Project Natal

The fact that the very first thing they show in that video is Peter Molyneux indicates that the Natal is being oversold and will not meet expectations.

Also, even though it looks correct based on the angle of the video, "Milo" is actually looking offscreen. If you were the one using the device it would look terrible.

It's awesome technology. Not sure if it will revolutionize gaming, though.

Anything more than just moving my fingers around is to much physical activity for gaming.

Re: Project Natal

It's only a matter of time before this kind technology becomes self-aware and then we're all fucked.

Re: Project Natal

Nobody is going to want to help 'milo' with his homework. Unless there is a way you can punch and bully little kids nobody will be interested.

and +1 on the comment about Peter Molyneux being involved. This guy oversells everything. Fable 1 was supposed to be the most important game in human history--the first original game since chess.

I'm sorry...at what point does the "fun" start with this project?

Re: Project Natal

Looks like a waste of time and money to me. Like someone else said, I had an EyeToy too, and it was more a gimmick than anything else.

Depends on how you feel about 10-year-old boys. Depending on how much fun you have, you may get a visit from virtual Chris Hanson (but not before being virtually ordained by the virtual Pope).

Re: Project Natal

I'm still pretty excited for it, although that video seemed a little too scripted for me. Claire seems nice, though.

My personal feelings on this thing are I'll wait until I see it first hand. Everything I've seen is too scripted.

Re: Project Natal

Project Natal to cost $150 and launch in October.

I should point out that every single console hardware add-on has failed. Every one.
I repeat: every single console hardware add-on has failed.

So, in review, what do console hardware add-ons do? That's right, they fail!
Which ones fail? Yes, every single one - all the time!
Natal will be no different.

Re: Project Natal

A ton of people forked out more than that for Guitar Hero and Rockband. If the games are good it will sell well.

That is the exact reason why I'm not going to buy this thing at launch and will at the very least wait for a number of reviews.

As cool as I thought it was when I first saw it, I'm not all that high on it now. They're sorta in a tough spot with it. The gaming community isn't nearly ready for a brand new independent system that is set up like this, and an add-on does help split consumers. If they are determined to release something like this, this is the way to do it. I guess time will tell how it will do.

They better be very hopeful that they'll have some outstanding games for it, that actually work the way gamers want them to.

Guitar Hero/Rockband are not the same thing and a bad analogy - those are platforms onto themselves, with hundreds (if not thousands) of songs available with more coming out weekly - the developers that put out the controls also put out the game and content - it's self-contained and the instruments work for all those guitar games. But look at something like DJ Hero or Band hero, compared to the earlier games in the platform for a better analogy.

Re: Project Natal

I don't doubt that it will fail, but it's completely reasonable to mention the music game genre when you say that every single console hardware add-on has failed.

That's a shaky line to me. If it looks like a hardware add-on....

Anyway, of all of the motion controllers out there (this, PS3 and Wii) this looks the most revolutionary. Everybody at E3 last year looked like they were having a blast and it "just worked". I can't say that I've heard the same buzz for PS3, and let's face it the Wii isn't in the same category. I hope this takes off and launches a new wave of interaction. There could be some really promising things, especially if MS can license out to computer manufacturers.

Re: Project Natal

i think Xbox totally screwed the pooch by offering this for the Xbox360. they should've waited on the tech, perfected it, and used it as a launch feature for the next Xbox system in a few years.
