Stores really are not allowed to sell the systems below their manufacturer's set price....that is why you always end up seeing "free gift card giveaways" and "extra games/controller bundles" being offered instead....
I think the Walmart offering of free Batman:AA, inFamous, and Dark Knight BD along with the $299 slim 120GB system purchase is pretty damn good....if I was in the market for a system, I'd try and jump all over that: two of the systems best games and one of the best movies ever on BD, free with purchase....

Is this available right now?

Of course not. It's a Black Friday door-buster (i.e. there will be like 20 of them and they will be gone in three minutes and only go to those who spent the night in line). Best Buy is selling the system with free LBP GOTY and R&C Crack in Time games, also a great deal.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

So despite seeing the black friday door buster deals, there's no way in hell I was going to attempt to get one. I finally decided over the weekend to bite the bullet and get a PS3. After having two XBox 360's die on me due to RROD (the second one occurring JUST a few months after the 3 year RROD warranty expired). So far I'm quite pleased. Got a 120gb PS3 Slim seems like the build quality is much nicer than the 360 and I'm digging it quite a bit. Haven't owned a PS2 since about 2005 so it's nice to be back in the sony camp. Since I'm on a bit of a budget, anyone see any good deals on GT5 Prologue? 30 bucks seems a bit steep for it considering the full GT5 should be out in a few months (hopefully) for 60 so I don't want to blow the money on it but it seems like it would tide me over nicely until the full GT5 comes out.

Also, are people still playing Warhawk? I tried the demo and it was pretty damn cool but I know it's an older game and with it being online only I don't want to buy it only to find out it's been long since abandoned by players.

Lastly, regarding the headset, I realize I can use any old bluetooth headset (I have a bluetooth speakerphone I'm tempted to try) but do all online multiplayer games support the headset like the 360? Also is there a quick way to mute the mic in game or is it headset dependent?

Okay, I get that it's the 360 style layout, but seriously that controller just screams "cheaply made". If anyone gets one, please post impressions.

Some user reviews on one site said there was a lot of lag. And some games like Uncharted are hard to handle with r1 and L1 buttons.

One of the reasons I shyed away from the X-Box.

Does this knock off at least have sixaxis control unlike the other 360 style controller?

And yet there is enough demand to warrant two third parties making 360 style controllers on the PS3.

The DualShock is an amazing controller... if we were still in 1998. Times change, Sony just hasn't gotten the memo yet. By comparison, were we still using these in 1985?

Just because some people like the 360 controller doesn't mean that everyone likes it. I have small hands in comparison and the 360 controller is awkward and hard for me to use. Just because the "times change" doesn't mean that functioning things have to.

Here's a review of the controller:

http://www.destructoid.com/blogs/bra...r-154544.phtml

It has bluetooth and six axis but there's too many negatives to warrant a purchase.

I really like my Dreamgear PS3 controller but the lack of motion controls makes playing Uncharted a problem. I usually switch controllers for the motion control parts but that's a real hassle. I assume this controller lack motion control as well.

Edit: I see that is that new has motion control but it looks like ass. Pass.

I understand preferring the 360 controller to the DS3, but I don't get people who feel that there's some reason they CAN'T use the DS3. It works fine, at least in my admittedly small hands. The offset joysticks is something I'm pretty used to, but the DS3's ones work fine for me after just a few minutes and actually I even prefer them for driving games since it leaves your thumbs in a more natural "driving" position. Again, maybe it's different for those with large hands, but since they added the rumble back into the PS3's controller, I've been very happy.
I would strongly encourage anyone who's a little frustrated with the DS3, before plunking $50 on a third party controller to try the $5 RealTriggers available at Amazon. They really work nicely, correcting my biggest beef with the controller (limited travel in the R1 and L1 buttons, making them feel more like triggers or getting more analog control on throttle and brake) and make a nice filler item for free shipping.

Aside from its awful D-pad, I think the 360 controller might be my favorite one of all time.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

Seems we do this once a year now. It's also my biggest point of contention with the Playstation brand. Like dsa_shea said about avoiding Xbox because of the controller, I avoided both the PS1 & PS2 mostly because of the controllers. Having a "functioning"(dsa_shaea) controller that "works fine"(Decker) is one thing. It's another to hold something so ergonomic and comfortable that you forget you're holding a controller (see Wavebird and 360 pad). Sony did get one thing right (and I know I'm in the minority), the Sixaxis. I much prefer that over the DS because of its weight. It almost disappears into your hands, and would if these glaring problems were absent:
  • The slick rubber convex analogs always cause my thumbs to slip off. Possibly the worst possible design this side of the non-round housing Nintendo uses. I end up keeping my thumb on the edge of the analog instead of top. Not practical or comfy.
  • The triggers have been addressed, the $5 solution works great.
  • Ergonomically when you grab a controller your thumbs fall to the button face on the right and the same area on the left. There's no reason to have a digital pad in the prime real estate spot on a controller anymore. Having to hold your left thumb perpendicular to your palm is about as far from natural as it gets.

The controller is a dozen years old. As I posted above, that would be akin to using an Atari 2600 joystick long after the NES had debuted. Actually a closer timeline would be like packaging a NES pad with the N64. Advances have been made in the last dozen years, there is no reason to not accept change. Nintendo makes advances with controllers every generation. MS has even done so with two consoles. What's Sony's excuse? Backlash? The DS was never a perfect controller, maybe slightly above average. There's absolutely no reason a 2010 console should come with a 1998 controller.

I have the Real Triggers and the FPS Freek nubs (to make the analogs concave) and both work great. The fact that I have to purchase $15-20 in third party accessories to bring the Dual Shock up to 2010 standards is absurd.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

Regarding the triggers, I have a feeling they made them that way for looks rather than functionality. The triggers being rounded that way was more consistent with the past controllers' design, to hell if it didn't play as well. I also suspect that was the reason to put both analog sticks on the bottom and to break up the D-pad. See, that way it was symmetrical. I'll take function over form any time, myself.

The analog stick locations on the PS3 controller makes playing FPS games really difficult for me. It feels unnatural, is rather uncomfortable, and I always seem to lack the precision I get on the 360 pad (neither match kb+m, but I hate sitting behind a kb+m to game now that I have a job where I sit in front of a kb+m all damn day). Similarly, on platformers I have a tendency to lose grip of the analog and tend to get hand cramps a lot, lot quicker.

It just isn't a particularly great controller layout, unless you're playing a fighter with the D-pad.

I like both the DS3 and the 360 controllers. Biggest strength of the DS3 is the D-pad and responsive L3/R3 buttons. Biggest weakness of the DS3 is the shoulder buttons and triggers (L1/R1 & L2/R2).
