Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

I updated to FW3.0 and love it! It looks perfect on my set up, but my screen is bigger than the average size (110"). The fonts and layout works so well with my screen. Still, they should allow you to revert back to the smaller size if you'd like.

Other than that, the changes haven't really impacted me at all.

I thought there were font size settings for the themes before?

I was surprised how easy it was as well (watched a youtube video). Anything else I should do/know about with that account? Any "can't miss" demos?

I created a japan account also.....the theme was nice. I wonder if the US store will release a free one come Thursday. I'm curious what else is in the japan store...although, since I cannot read japanese, it was a bit hard to navigate.

Anyone else had any problems with games freezing after the update? I thought that maybe I had a defective disc.

There's a post at Joystiq today on this topic. I guess Naughty Dog has been contacted about the issue, but no response yet.

Cosmetically, I don't really like the new update. The sparkly background is fine, though I liked the color scheme of the old background better. The new font/icon sizes make the OS feel cartoony, which is a damn shame because it was pretty sleek before. I do like the scrollbar that appears when quickly scrolling through long lists of files though.

Functionally, I hate that the system defaults to the "What's New" page every time I start it up now. I'm also not really a fan of the new infobox in the corner, mostly because of the ads that keep scrolling by on it. I'd disabled that "feature" in older versions of the firmware, and there doesn't appear to be a way of turning it off now. The Playstation Store icons appearing under the Game and Video folders seems a bit excessive as well.

The whole update really feels like they're trying to fix something that isn't broken. I get that they're pushing the PS Store, but I wish they could pull info from my account, see that I've spent a substantial amount of money in the store and realize they're better off not shoving the shit down my throat.

Is the Africa theme able to be sent to non-foreign account holders? If so, I will trade 2 of the PepsiRockBand tracks for it.

??
what exactly has changed that I missed
doesn't the background color still change depending on time of day?

I have the locoroco theme, so I don't see any sparkles or anything. I concur with not liking it...at the moment. But, it likely will grow on me.

rotfl I never knew what caused the color to change! Since I never turn my PS3 on before ~9PM at night Mon-Fri I thought there was just a different color for the weekends (when I'm likely to turn it on around 1PM).

The color depends on the date; the brightness depends on the time. This Wikipedia article has a chart that shows the various colors throughout the year.

I don't think it changes based on time anymore, does it? I was looking for a black background, but it doesn't look like one's available. I just went with blue. I usually just use the Flower theme anyway...

It still changes, but it doesn't go to complete black at night (or if it does, it does so much later at night). Last night I turned on the system and the background was about 1/2 black and 1/2 dark blue, which looked really ugly with the purple wave.

Dual sound output for the win!!! Most everything else is inconsequential.

The uncharted thing is bothersome though...

Guys, I installed 3.0 last night, and my ps3 kicked me in the nuts. Sony needs to fix this, we can't have our game systems becoming sentient and kicking us in the junk.

I was gonna give Uncharted a playthrough today. I hope it doesn't affect my fat PS3.

I love their idea of trying to time the freeze so you can freeze it while nathan has a funny pose.

I couldn't find the answer to this question anywhere so here goes:

I got a new PS3 Slim today and I need to transfer all my data from my old 60gb fatty system. How do I go about doing that?

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

Plug both hard-drives (or one at a time) into your PC and transfer saves that way. Since they're just regular drives, it should work.

Basically you need a fat 32 partitioned external hard drive with enough space to back up on.

Plug this into a usb port on the 60 gb. on the X-media bar go to I believe system settings/backup... back it all up.. plug into the slim same way, go to same option and do restore backup.. And you're done

Missed this yesterday ... if you haven't figured it out yet, you can set it so it doesn't go to "What's New" when you boot up. I think the setting for it is under the "System" section of the settings.

Join one of the 500 "Unofficial PS3 3.0 Killed My Cat" petitions on the official forum. :p

I got a "Just showing our gratitude" email from the PlayStation Network folk last night ... I guess they're trying to be friendlier because so many people are complaining about 3.0? I didn't send them any complaints, so I guess it went out to all registered users. I skimmed it to see if their way of showing gratitude was to give me a free downloadable game, but no such luck. ;)

Do the backup to an external drive as glassdragon explained. Keep in mind though, locked game saves, such as Rock Band or Guitar Hero, won't transfer to your new system. Also, I think you will have to redownload any paid for content that you had on your old system. You won't have to pay for it again, it just doesn't restore to a new system.
