Oyi, i bet you're feeling like ants on a hot pan... Okay, here's what i would do if i'm in your shoes (and no, i really don't want to be in your shoes right now).

use a 2nd working PS3 to help you out... Swap the hdd of the working PS3 with the one you have. Then use the working PS3's BACKUP option to transfer the contents to an external hdd. This will save the exact image of your broken PS3's content. So, if you ever get the broken PS3 fixed, use that to fully restore your PS3.

Now, with the "new" PS3, you should be able to use all of the game saves and game files. The only thing you won't be able to play are the PSN downloads... For those contents are linked to consoles. You'll need to redownload them... If you haven't use up the SIX download counts, you can download them to the "new" PS3. First you'll need to relink the "new" PS3 to your PSN account of course. If the contents are no longer in PSN, don't worry, they should be in your PSN download history, so yeah, add to your cart again...

it's a bit like my hectic upgrade from the 60gb original PS3 to the 40gb gunmetal PS3... i hope all works out for you :)

That's quite complicated... i think like Fujishiq said earlier, a 3rd party software is required for this.

If you just pop the PS3 hdd into the external casing thing and pluck it to the Windows PC, the external hdd letter will not show up...

and yes, it should be something no one ever have to look into...

oh crap, on a 2nd thought, you have a valid point there...

i'm not sure using a working PS3 will allow you backup the copy prohibited files... oh man, this makes your head spin! It shouldn't be restricted in theory, but since the working PS3 will not show the hdd's downloaded content, how the hell you know the downloaded contents will be backed up?

I wish I could figure out the slow downloads as well, I had an old wrt54G router it would do wireless and wired at the same speed slooow to PS3. I have a new one now, the WRT160N and I can't even get it to connect wirelessly but its 3 ft from the PS3 so I have it wired, but it's as slow as the old old one. I got COD wow and had to do the update for it and it took 20 minutes to download the 170 mbfile, WTF is up with that and demo's take at least that long as well.

Wow! I didn't know it was that problematic to backup your saves. I was planning on upgrading my hdd to a 320GB one that was recommended in the previous thread. I thought it was a matter of simply transfering my saves back from the old hdd via the USB ports. :(

KZ2 was $53 from Amazon (there was a $5 promotional coupon). I sold the Home costume code for $15. A little fee here and there, KZ2 is really $43 for me. If you have a lot to play, just wait...

Well, it's not confirmed on CAG so who knows. By tomorrow or Friday GS e-mails out their promotion for the week, so we'll know by then.

Oh back to the external hdd topic a bit...

In order to be used with the PS3, the external hdd has to be in FAT32. If you formatted the hdd in Windows XP/Vista, chances are the hdd is NTFS.

To change from NTFS to FAT32, you can do the following:

1. Use command prompt and type:
format /FS:FAT32 X:
where X is the letter of the hdd.

2. Use the SwissKnife application, it's free.

The reason you can't use Windows' Drive Manager to change back to FAT32 is that, it simply won't do it for you (MS don't want you to use the old FAT32 format, which can come back and bite them in the butt).

They're all right there in that tiny hard drive that says "No Entrance". Sons a bitches you are Sony!
