In order to do that, though, the PS3 needs to be capable of playing those games. I'm not necessarily asking them to put the EE chip back in there (or whatever was removed hardware-wise), but software emulation would be more than sufficient.

So it looks like it lost the glossiness of the original PS3 and more of a dull black like the PS2, right?

A little underwhelming, but a $100 price drop is huge. I might be in for one around Christmas time, although God of War is the only Sony game left that i'm interested in.

Anyone interested in a 60GB BC PS3???? :)

I'm trying to wrap my mind around why you would possibly want to do that. You're not gaining anything with the Slim. In fact, you're missing out on a lot of extra features if you have an original 60GB model.

Might depend on whether anyone uses those features. If you don't have PS2 games, and don't need a memory card reader or anything like that, it might be worth it to get some money back as I assume the backwards compatible models would fetch a small premium.

I still have a brand new unopened 60Gb launch unit that I could sell but I'm keeping it around just because of the extra features of that model. Slim is nice but not nice enough for me to drop my current unit.

Weren't the original 60GB models the ones that were more susceptible to failing due to over heating issue known as the YLOD.

Too bad they ditched the touch sensitive buttons. No big deal naturally, just one of those things that seemed like a nice touch.

I'm hoping that Sony sees a surge in sales with the Slim. I grew up on Nintendo, but Sony won me over this generation with the PS3, great machine.

I promise I'm not trying to bait you, but what did Sony do to win you over this generation with the PS3? I've always heard that they won with the PS1 and PS2, but I think this is the first time I've heard someone get on the sony bandwagon starting with this gen.

Fan noise is obnoxious on the 60GB.

Blu-ray did it for me. I switch consoles every gen. N-64 -> xbox -> ps3.

Ha! That's the leaked PS3 case from a few months ago. I said it was legit... and it is. :)

Neogaf is going crazy everyone says there now going to buy a PS3  Whoever thought a $100 price drop would cause such mass hysteria, Sony should have done this a long time ago.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

Neogaf does not equal mainstream consumers, though. The PS2 was a success because EVERYONE had one. Will the PS3 Slim hit that mainstream audience? I'm not sure either way.

That new case looks like shit. At least the current PS3 looks like it's worth $399. That slim case looks like its worth $99. The should have just used a standard Sony BD player case.

For me, it was a combination of things. I had always been on the Nintendo bandwagon, even with the GameCube. But they've kinda lost me with the Wii. I have one, but I barely play it. Seems like the same rehashed franchises over and over with barely anything that new. I ended up trading in Super Smash Bros. Brawl because it seemed just like Melee to me.

I'm more into home theater these days, so I wanted an HD console as well. The PS3 being reviewed as an excellent Blu-ray player piqued my interest, so I went with it over the 360 (also didn't want to deal with the RROD issues). I've had it for a couple of years, and it just seems like a technological juggernaut, with new features being added here and there like DVD upconversion. It's been fun trying out new IP's since I never owned a PlayStation before, and I like features like PSN and the PS3 acting as a media server. I am jealous that 360 has Netflix, but what're you gonna do.

I sound like a plant or something, but I'm not, just enjoy the system...

The slim PS3 looks ok to me. Given the choice between the glossy coating of the current PS3 units and the matte finish of the slim, I'd go with the slim just because of the whole fingerprints and dust thing.

My one question is, why did Sony stick with the slot-loading disc drive in the new slim? Wouldn't it have been equally space-saving and perhaps better to have made it a top-loading drive (as they did with the slim PS2)? The only reason I can think of as to why they might have done it this way is to keep it relatively similar in design to the original.

Got my 80GB PS3 back from the repair shop, but they sent me a refurbed model from someone else. Hopefully this will stop the constant laser issues from happening. Of course that means I lost my RB and KZ2 saves as well as everything I've downloaded. Going to take forever to get that stuff all back.

Doing the restore I got some kind of funky error message telling me it was rebuilding the file table or something. I didn't properly restore my user so I freaked out for a bit thinking all my saves were gone, until I realized that they were put under a different user (*User1 to be exact). I guess it failed the renaming portion. It's going to suck to reinstall all those games too. The backup took 112 minutes, the restore took 2

I'll agree that the fan noise is annoying on the 60GB. It's not loud all the time, but it seems to kick in. Although, I do like my 4 USB ports and the card readers are nice at times. The slim is just new :) I like the smaller size also. Shiny was nice though...although this would match my Elite 360.

I can't wait to see August NPD numbers.

Mind you, in this economy $300 is still a lot of money. I actually think that $300 is a great value, but again we have never had this kind of economy with the modern gaming consoles.

Back when I got my PS3, I had an opportunity to buy a 60GB BC model, but seeing it in action made me think the unit was working REALLY hard. So I went with the 80GB non hardware BC unit instead. Luckily I haven't run into any PS2 games won't run yet.

The slim is pretty cool and I have no doubt that I'll eventually own one, but I'm certainly not letting mine go to get one.

Yeah, new is fun...although, EBAY prices on the 60GB Ps3 is not as great as I thought. I suppose I could sell it with a 320GB HDD and advertise it as a 320GB BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE PS3...SUPER RARE!
