Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

Anyone know if the price drop also affects the bundled versions (Killzone/MGS and Wall-E/LBP) too as they are also priced at $399 (same as regular 80gb) and when retailers will change the price?

I've got til Monday the 24th to get the difference back with Best Buy's price match policy.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

Is everyone's fan on their 60GB PS3 that loud? I thought mine was pretty quiet. But maybe I'm just used to the jet engine in my 360.

Good news the hard drive is still able to be replaced in the new slim.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

I never really had an issue with the size of the PS3. It's no thicker than a 360 and fits in fine with my other homve video components. Still, for those in a small studio or something, it might be a welcome change, I guess.
My 60 GB has a very quiet fan. I love the BC feature. Though I rarely play it for games, there's nothing in the redesign that would make the experience any better to me. Glad it dropped in price though. It was certianly too pricey before. It almost kills me that I spent $500 on mine (but since my mom purchased it for my birthday two years ago, I guess I can live with it).

I'd be shocked if they took out the ability to change the hard drive, with the increasing push towards digital distribution.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

"What's New" isn't really that new at all. In a conversation with Joystiq, SCEA network director Eric Lempel revealed that the feature has been in development for quite a long time, before Microsoft first revealed the NXE last year.
Of course. Just like the motion controller was in the works before the Wii and MS's avatars were being worked on before Miis.

I'd like an exec to just come out and say, "hey, we liked what they were doing and thought we could do it similar but better for our consumers."

Is there any reason to suspect that Blu-ray playback will be any different with the slim??

As in poorer quality than the current ones? If that is the case, what about upconversion quality as well?

Right. I'm wondering if what makes the Blu-ray on the PS3 so awesome is the Drive or the Software or a mixture of the two? If they're cheapening this thing then it would be reasonable to believe they're changing the optical drive. MS changes drive on us all the time without notice. What makes the PS3 BD so special and how could the slim be impacted?

Over time, piece parts decrease in manufacturing cost. There's no reason to think anything changed.

I've never heard of software being restricted by the box size that contains it

Not that this matters to most people but, "users will not be able to install other Operating Systems to the new PS3 system."

All you need to do is look at the decreased video quality of the "improved" PSP-3000 with it's horrible ghosting to know that at Sony newer # better.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

After looking at some better pics, it does look pretty slick. I was surprised to see that the hard power switch in the back is no longer present. Also, the power plug looks different. Is the AC adapter no longer built in?

That was such a huge plus for the PS3, I'm surprised they would risk alienating their fans by removing the hard power switch given that the 360 has taken so much heat for not having it

What's the advantage of the hard power switch?

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

They probably had to change the power supply to make it fit in the new case.

Just an observation. I don't really know of anyone who doesn't leave theirs in standby anyway...

Sorry, my post was just a joke as there was a PS3 fan here that cited the hard power switch as one the benefits that the PS3 had over the 360. L&O remembered I guess

Oops...heh. I thought maybe there was some legitimate argument for a hard power switch.
