I have all Macs so I was just figuring it would be easier to just load all videos directly onto the PS3 and use it as a media server. I just bought the PS3 today and it has like 120 gigs. Figured I would just fill it up with movies and what not as it really won't be my "main" gaming station ( have a 360 as well and Ill be getting most games for that)

My tv doesn't technically do 720 either, it upscales it 1080i. With GTA4, I ended up unchecking everything except 1080i in the PS3s video options, and that forces it into 1080i. The picture looked much better that way, but not sure if all games can do that.
Nah no DVI input. I did try to uncheck eerything, but there is an option I cannot uncheck (NTSC or somehting) and that results in anything below 1080i to be totally downscaled to 480i, maybe worse. It looks bad.

Yeah, your problem is a known issue for PS3 and non-720p tv's. It sucks.

Yeah, the problem is that it's a crapshoot as to whether you would get the same system back.

You can't get the data off with a PC because the whole drive is encrypted to lock down the games and any other protected content.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

Hey guys I just purchased a PS3 and was wondering if you could point me to a good FAQ/tips/things you should know page for it. I've been doing some searching but finding stuff that's pretty old. I don't want to clutter this thread with questions that are easily answered like someone else (ahem, ahem)

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

I don't know of any sites that could quickly tell you what to do with it, other than the manual: http://manuals.playstation.net/docum...ent/index.html They update this with new firmware versions to cover new stuff that won't be in the printed manual.

Seriously, it may sound boring, but reading through that will get you familiar with the settings. It's hard to recommend exactly how to set it up when every system is different. I would suggest updating the firmware though.

Does PS3 media server play .mkv files? I've been using WMP11 to stream all my stuff. I usually convert and copy to my PS3 locally, but I was curious if PS3 media server worked better.

Also, will it work on the 360 also?

If you have the right codecs, you can stream any and all video files to the PS3.

I say bring on the questions. Isn't that the whole point of this thread/forum? I'm glad to help if I can. Chess is the real PS3 expert around here though. I don't think he minds fielding general PS3 questions either.

Damn, nothing ever comes out my way.

I wonder if this is something that can be fixed with a system update or if its the hardware/software.

If he really wants to save his data he better get it fixed by a third party. I had my YLOD system "fixed" by Sony and they just sent me someone else's refurbished system so I lost everything on my 320 gb hdd. If I were him I would find a reputable repairman, which will cost less than Sony, and have the system re-flowed. Tell him to pull the hdd and keep it while it is being repaired. Has he swapped the HDD before? If he has tell him to put the original back in before he ships it out. I hope this helps.

And if he gets his system fixed he better backup his data to an external drive pronto.

The research I did told me that the PS3 wouldn't play .mkv files, but I've found that is does. At least when copied using PS3 Media Server.

I don't think I'm much of an expert, but yeah, I'm happy to answer questions about the system.

Besides Uncharted series, Little Big Planet, god of war series, what are some must play games for PS3? (PS3 exclusive only, I have a 360)

Were you ever a Katamari fan? Katamari Forever is brilliant if you like the franchise.

Killzone 2 wasn't bad (worth a rental at least) and while I didn't care for it much, Metal Gear Soild 4 got a lot a praise (way to many cut scenes for my taste).

If you have a 360 and have played the Gears of War games you can skip Killzone 2 IMO.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

Could probably skip Resistance 1 & 2 as well, since they're relatively generic FPS's with great produciton values. But they tend to get mentioned a lot in discussions about great PS3 exclusives alongside Killzone 2, so I just included them. And I ultimately did enjoy my time with them (never played Gears), but they're really only worth rentals.

So, you copy mkv directly to your PS3? Does it convert to another format?

What I've been doing is using the software mkv2vob to convert mkv to another format...then I put on my portable HDD and transfer that way. However, sometimes files are over 4GB, and you have to convert in PARTS (since FAT32 limit is 4GB).

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

I've always had to use mkv2vob as well. No big deal since the software runs quickly.
