My guess is that the systems have a model of hard drive that has had higher than normal reports of failure. That's what it sounds like, anyway.

I would hope Sony learned a lesson from MS though. If they just slapped together the cheapest parts they could on these just to rush out a cheaper model don't you think the backlash would be even more than it is/was for MS?

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

Well, I finally caved in and just bought the 80GB model online. My last console was the Dreamcast (!!!) and finally decided it was time to get a playstation instead of playing games on my PC. Didn't really want to get the slim either.... who knows how reliable the slim is. I'm happy owning the 80GB model for $299.

Yeah, sounds like that.

And I'd be really surprised if something like that happens. In the last years there's have been issues with some hard drives, like Seagate, but most of the time is just for specific tasks, running in RAID in Linux or something like that, and that was for the 1.5 TB. I really don't expect anything bad happens to a 120 GB hard drive used in a console.

(Yeah, now all of them will fail )

This is sad:

Get your Portable ID!

Oh and it seems you have to update manually. Meaning there's a button there that says:
Refresh your portable ID with your latest trophies!
* Note: It may take up to 10 minutes for other sites to reflect this change

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

Is the newer 80GB that much quieter than the 60GB? I have a 60GB that I just moved to my home office (bought a Pioneer BDP-51FD at Best Buy for cheap) and I never realized just how loud it was until I moved it into a smaller room...the fan really kicks on when playing a DVD or XVID...

I'm hoping I play it a bit more now that it is out of our family room. I'm debating on selling it and picking up the 80GB bundle...but I would lose BC and my current God of War II save (only half way done).

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

I have an 80GB Metal Gear version (the one with BC) and the fan doesn't seem that noisy but I can definitely hear it when playing a dvd or BD. The sound usually drowns it out there.

By the way PS3 and future PS3 owners: reported at CAG, you can get a sub to Playstation: The Official Magazine today only for $3.99 a year up to 3 years. http://www.tanga.com/deals/current/magazine

I was going to let mine lapse at the end of the year but 12 bucks for 3 years is too good to pass up. It's not as good as OXM but it is better than NP.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

My 80GB is definitely much more quiet than the 60GB I compared it to. Mine is also an 80GB with BC. 1998Nole (as he's known around here) had a problem with a 40GB unit being so loud he returned it, he even owns an old 360 so you know that bitch had to be noisy!! So I think maybe it's just a coin toss or something. I know mine is FAR more quiet than the 360 in my spare room, but not as quiet as the Arcade 360 it sits next to, that thing is dead silent. I'm far more prone to hearing my projector fan than either of them, since it's located directly above my seating area. With any reasonable speaker volume you can't hear any of the equipment.

Looks like it is just the print version. Doesn't it normally come with a disc?

PS Magazine doesn't do an edition with a disc. Print only. OXM is the only mag that still does demo discs.

Thanks. I love gaming mags to read on the crapper, but get enough of them for free to pass on this. For $4-12 a year I would probably buy it for a disc, not sure why with easy downloads, but I still like demo discs for some reason.

How do you get the discount? It still says $24.00. Is it that code?

Put in code "33bd". It gives the code someone on that page as well.

Is that the magazine where they, sometimes, print codes to get QORE for free?

They used to do that. They announced a few months ago that they were going to stop doing that and they have. They want you to pay for Qore now.

Thanks! I picked up a 3 year subscription. At that price, you can't beat it, and I don't currently get any video game magazines.

Dammit. I wish I'd seen that before I renewed my current subscription.

It states that as long as you put in your name and address exactly as it is on your current sub, it will just extend your current sub.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

Thanks....I just got a 1 year sub, had some money in my PayPal account.

As for the 60GB...mine is loud at times. It seems the fan will kick in at random times. I have an open entertainment console, so heat should not be a major issue....

Re: Official PS3 Thread - March 09 Edition

My 60GB is pretty loud when the fan kicks on. It seems that it generates quite a bit of heat. I keep a fan blowing across the opening in my console to help move the air.
