Re: Official PS3 Thread - October 08 edition

There's finally a Wipeout HD demo up. Downloaded and installed before I left for work. I'm looking forward to checking it out later.

I never understood why they would release a game, and then wait months before releasing the demo. If the game doesn't suck, why not put the demo out at the time of release while the game is hot and in the press?

Re: Official PS3 Thread - October 08 edition

In a case like Wipeout, they are probably banking on impulse buys based on previous experience. If they have a demo, people that were more likely to impulse buy with no demo are probably going to download the demo and now, may or may not, buy the game. They probably figure it could only hurt them initially and then help them later when they release the demo for those that are more discerning.

2. Is there a way to charge the controller with the system off? I don't think there is but it kind of sucks that you have to have your system on just to charge the controller (my work around was to plug it into my PC).

3. Are there other themes you can get? I only see like 2 (IIRC) and it says to insert a flash drive to use others?

Thanks!
1. No, but the failure rate is not comparable.
2. I use my PC as well.
3. You can download fan-made themes directly through your internet browser on the PS3...just google "PS3 Themes" and you'll find several sites... www.bestps3themes.com comes to mind.

Hey, I just got a PS3 from the deal at Dell.com

Is there still problems with Metal Gear 4? I bought it because it was one of the few games that is a Sony exclusive. I have a few days to see if I should keep it.

A lot of common work-arounds include, as you said the PC, but I believe a lot of us use our Tivo/DVR boxes which are always on. Just leave the USB hanging out the back for when you need it. If you have a Wii, you can also charge it with that.

Yeah basically anything with a normal usb port that stays somewhat powered while the device is off. I wonder if the PS3 has a hardware limitation than prevents this. I would have thought they would fix it by now if it was a software problem.

You could also buy a powered usb hub that isn't connected to anything and use it as charging station for any other devices that can be charged via usb. Hmmm you could connected it to the PS3 and that should work also.

Target appears to be having a "buy 2 get 1" deal on all PS3 games.

I just solved my PS3 controller charging headache. No more cables.

The psyclone touchcharge.

Just a note of caution: This might not be national. It is mentioned as being in the weekly ad in some regions, but it isn't in mine (and others)!

I haven't seen an ad, but I can confirm I saw the deal at the Super Target in Richfield, MN.

Very tempting. Almost picked up a few of the $19.99 games.

I just installed the latest version of TVersity on my laptop and watched a couple of MP4s on my HDTV via the PS3. Just have to say, fantastic stuff. With all the PS3 can do, I'm baffled why it's not the best-selling console right now.

... Oh yea, the price

The 360 can do the same things.

I just started messing with the streaming this weekend myself. Pretty cool.

The 360 might be able to watch streaming video from a PC, but beyond that there is very little the 360 can do that the PS3 does with regard to multimedia.

I'd certainly like to be enlightened. Besides Blu-ray and by extension AVCHD what amazing features does the PS3 have multimedia wise that the 360 doesn't?

Please don't read my spoiler till after you compile your list

Spoiler:
If you say ATRAC you lose

Not looking to get too deep into the fray here, but I think that the built in wireless is a big plus...that and the fact that it's a dependable piece of hardware.

I'm not trying to be flip either. The above are two of the primary reasons I own a PS3 vs a 360.

As for the Wii, it has a couple of USB ports in the back, making it a great controller charger...otherwise, I don't use it much these days.

Yet everyone says that you should wire your PS3 cause the wifi connection is so flaky. Ironic, isn't it?

The other night I turned mine to wireless to try it out, took COD WAW online and had no problems.

But this is still the PS3 thread, and not VS right?

I wouldn't worry about it Chess, as I'm not really trying to start anything either, I just think it was a silly thing to say. I agree with you on the wireless, the 360 should have it built in without question but that IMO is not a multimedia feature. The way I took his post was to say that the PS3 is vastly superior as far as the amount of multimedia formats it can utilize. Which is simply not true. We all know the PS3 has Blu-ray and therefore can also play AVCHD but as far as streaming capability they are nearly even out of the box.

The PS3 can stream:
mpeg1
mpeg2
Divx
Xvid
WMV
mp4
H264

The 360 can stream
mpeg1
mpeg2
Divx
Xvid
WMV and WMV-HD
mp4 (synced with Zune) it's actually converted to WMV but it still works out of the box.
H264

The PS3 will not play WMV-HD unless you manipulate the file and convert it for use with PS3. Neither the PS3 or the 360 will play MKV files BUT you can play them on the PS3 using a fairly simple conversion. I'm not aware of an equally easy conversion for the 360 so you have to tip to the PS3 for that. But with the 360 you get native Netflix support. So all in all it seems they are pretty equal, at least as far as streaming video is concerned.

outside of ATRAC are there audio formats the PS3 will play that the 360 won't? I keep everything in MP3 format so that it will work across basically every device.
