Re: Official PS3 Thread - October 08 edition

Most aftermarket controllers are crap. I liked the logitech ones I had for the 360 but the logitech PS3 controllers have not gotten great reviews. The sixaxis and DS3 are just a little too small for my hands. Build quality is pretty important too me. I would rather struggle with the original Sony controllers than have one that won't last long. Dreamgear also makes the Warbeast guitar controller for the PS3 which looks really cool. I'm not sure how solid it is though. Anyone have any experience with Dreamgear products?

I wonder what Ben Heck charges for these?

^ that's awesome - if I had that, I would totally re-play both Resistance games with it, and every new PS3 game thereafter.

It's a thing of beauty, but you have to consider the cost of two controllers at $100 then time and labor. Pretty pricey novelty.

According to his website, Ben made two of those for someone. His quote was "if you have the money, I have the time.". The price was hundreds of dollars each apparently.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - October 08 edition

2.60 is out tonight.

Hi, everyone, we have a system software updates for PS3 coming soon, and I wanted to provide you with a sneak peak at the details.

The PS3 firmware update (v2.60) is designed primarily to enhance the system’s media capabilities. The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection. Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface. The Photo Gallery application will need to be installed separately from the XMB after you update your PS3’s firmware. To install the Photo Gallery application, go to the Photo section on the XMB, select Photo Gallery and press the X button.

The 2.60 update also includes:

* Guest access to PlayStation Store – This enables non-PlayStation Network members to browse through the storefront to check out the latest games, demos, videos, etc.
* DivX 3.11 support – Videos in this format can now be played on PS3.

I don't know if I should be embarrassed or not, but I've purchased all the DLC they've made available for HSG. Even my girlfriend was making fun of me for buying new outfits for the golfers.

Of course, now she never even considers using their outfits they originally had.

It's like DC went with a franchise I can't stand in their DC v. Mortal Kombat, and now a console I don't own.
I didn't even know DC was doing that, that's pretty cool (as I don't do PC or 360 gaming).

I'm digging the photo gallery thing, that could be interesting.

Don't forget Street Fighter IV comes out Feb 17th... that game is going to own. Then RE5 in early March.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - October 08 edition

Did the update this morning and it went smoothly/fairly quickly too. Not sure how much I'll actually use the photo gallery thing but it was interesting to play w/ for a little while. Kind of odd that you can't set up your own sound track using the music stored on the PS3 (at least I didn't see an obvious way to do it, in the "tools" menu you just have music on/off). One thing I did notice though, and I'll check it again later, the initial login after rebooting was SIGNIFICANTLY quicker. It used to take several minutes and frequently I'd get the "this is a DNS error" message. This time it came up within a minute of the machine starting. Hopefully whatever problems/issues they were having before have been resolved now.

Now if they would just release Savage Moon....

SFIV seems too slight of a game to "own", both figuratively and literally - fighting games, alone, can't cut it by themselves anymore.

The big PS3 release for Feb is going to be KillZone2 - even if the gameplay is lame (though early reviews have been very positive), it looks amazing enough that it would still be worth playing - I love being able to shoot a guy in the leg, watching him buckle realistically with his boot flying off his foot.

This is a 140 meg patch. Seems like a lot for a picture gallery and Divx support.

To each his own (pun intended) I guess, I love the SF franchise.

I do to (I actually owned a SFII cabinet back in '99), but I'm kinda over it.

I don't think it's a patch. As I understand it, when they update it you are downloading an entire new firmware, not a patch for the existing one.

I probably need to visit the Killzone thread to get this reference, but what's so realistic about a boot flying off someone's foot when they get shot in the leg? A cool detail, sure, but realistic?

The realistic thing is the guy's body-physics/reaction to where you shoot him. The boot flying off is just a fun detail. Combine those two, and you get awesomeness.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - October 08 edition

Couple questions for a new PS3 owner..

1. I'm reading a lot of people having them die lately.. Microsoft offered the extended warranty but I didn't see one for the PS3 (maybe I just missed it). Is there one?

2. Is there a way to charge the controller with the system off? I don't think there is but it kind of sucks that you have to have your system on just to charge the controller (my work around was to plug it into my PC).

3. Are there other themes you can get? I only see like 2 (IIRC) and it says to insert a flash drive to use others?

Thanks!

1. No, not yet, if ever.
2. No, and your work-around is the best method.
3. Yes, mostly through PSN, some are free, most cost money.

1.) The main thing to worry about with the PS3 is the BD drive dying. Mine died after 11 months of moderate usage but was fixed under warranty. Nobody really knows exactly how widespread this problem is, or whether the repaired drives actually will continue working.

2) I have a TiVo and I just plug a USB cable into the back of it and string it around to the front near the PS3. Then when I want to charge a controller, I just plug it in, whether the PS3 is on or not.

3) You can download themes from the PS store.

Another work around for charging the controllers is to set the auto-power off option to 1 hour. Then leave you PS3 on with the controller plugged in and it will shut off after an hour.

Kind of sounds like Charlie Brown on the mound. You know after he gives up a hit, and his socks and shoes go flying?

Since people don't seem to be going to the Killzone thread, here it is:

Tried it again tonight and I was logged in before/right as the machine finished booting. Hopefully this is a good indicator of things to come.

Re: Official PS3 Thread - October 08 edition

Getting a network error when trying to play music from my computer... anyone else having the same issue? It's actually the first time I've tried since getting my PS3 back, not sure if it's the firmware update or what....

There's a few posts about it online but not really an answer for it...
