IGN's review of The Maw is in.
Sounds fun but short. As much as I like platformers, I'll probaby go for it. According to Maj Nelson's podcast, the demo is the entire first level so that should give you a really good feel as to wether you like the game or not.
Closing Comments
The Maw is a fine little romp for people who feel the platformer genre doesn't get enough respect these days. It's also a great game for parents searching for something to hand off to a young child. The Maw is fairly linear and there isn't a great amount of depth to it, but its two main characters are adorable and the pacing is spot on. The Maw is a well-crafted little game and the first of 2009 that is worth a look.

8.0 Presentation
An unlockable free theme and gamerpics are a nice touch. The whole package has a good sense of style.
9.0 Graphics
This is easily one of the most attractive XBLA games thanks to the vibrant colors and great animations.
9.0 Sound
A wonderful soundtrack. I love Frank's voice.
8.0 Gameplay
It's pretty easy and there isn't a lot of depth here, but its always fun which is what's most important.
6.5 Lasting Appeal
The game can easily be beaten in a weekend of light playing. Some might play again to find everything, but most will call it a day.

Tried out The Maw and quite liked it. It's pretty standard action-platforming stuff, but it has a lot of character and looks like a retail game. Check out the demo for sure.

Just finished playing through the trial of The Maw, which was the entire first tutorial style-level. It definitely feels more like a retail game than an XBLA game, and I already ponied up my 800 points.
It didn't help anything that my wife was watching and thought it looked cute as hell.

This may be kind of a weird question, but does anyone know off-hand if the "get the bugs to stop firing" glitch in old school Galaga is still intact in the XBLA version?
I tried it the other day and waited for like 25 minutes and I still couldn't get those little bastards to stop firing, and I'm pretty sure I did it right.
Basically, what I'm saying here is that I'm not good enough at Galaga to get those higher-end achievements without cheating.

Next time I come down to visit my family, I'll stop by and knock it out for you. How's next Saturday sound? My niece is having her first birthday party.

Oh, that's okay, man. Don't have to do that. Besides, I have a strict moral code when it comes to getting achievements. Cheating is okay, as long as I'm the one who's doing it.
Thanks for the offer, though.

The Maw - thoughts? I like the demo well enough (played through it twice), but I'm not sure if there's much to do once it's done.
How is it? I see Pixy, discostu, Gramps, Decker, and Shag have given it a run.

I liked the Maw demo. It seems this one would be a steal for 800 points. I just have too much on my plate right now to buy it.
I may let me kids have a run through the demo and get it for them if they like it.

I definitely liked the premise of the game, and the scope is very large for an XBLA title. There is a good variety (as far as the things Maw can morph into), and I didn't find myself getting bored at all, except on Level 7, because I thought I missed something one time, and then it glitched a 2nd time.
There are a couple of negatives though. Your character moves way too slow. There are some parts where you're just walking for a good 15-20 seconds with nothing else to do. Some people said they found it repetitive, but that wasn't the case for me.
If you liked the demo level, you'll probably like the game. Levels 1-7 follow that same format (Maw eats something -> morphs into another form (that has some power) -> eats more things -> level end). Level 8 is completely different, but I won't spoil it for you.

It is what it is. The demo is a pretty fair representation of what you're getting here. I sort of like it, and my daughter likes to watch me play it. It certainly isn't the greatest action-platformer, but it does have charm to spare and is a nice little diversion. I agree character moves too slow. It makes for a nice contrast to Banjo-Kazooie which is far deeper, but more frustrating in it's controls. For me, The Maw is worth 800 points, but don't expect Ratchet & Clank here.

Oh, BTW apparently three new levels are coming for The Maw as DLC at 100 pts each. Don't know if that's good or bad news, but it's out there.
And speaking of pay DLC, there is a planet pack out for Meteos, just as we thought they would do. I still haven't pulled the trigger on that game. I like the demo, but I'm not completely sold on it yet. Anyone get it? Any thoughts?

Loved it on the DS but couldn't imagine playing it without a stylus.

I like it. Great production values for an XBLA game, fun to play (except for a few brief moments that are a little annoying), and short. I know people are saying that there's no replay value, but I know I missed stuff on my first playthrough. I missed a couple of those white grub/fly things and I only got "100% Eaten" on maybe two of the levels. So, at least for me, there's some replay value there. For me it was worth $10, but if you've played the demo and aren't sold yet, maybe it's just not for you.
