Re: Batman - Arkham Asylum

So for somebody new to this game, is the "Game of the Year" version the one to get? It's more expensive than the other one and I have zero interest in 3D. However, I would like to play all the extra levels.

I thought the extra levels were free DLC. Or is there some info I'm missing.

Some are free, but the rest you have to purchase them for like $3.99 each or something along those lines.

Re: Batman - Arkham Asylum

There are 5 challenge maps. 3 are free and the other 2 cost $3.49 each on psn. So, it depends how much cheaper you can get the standard edition. If it's more than $7, you might as well get the standard edition and just download the other 2 maps.

I don't know about the 360 version.

Re: Batman - Arkham Asylum

I just finished the main story on normal yesterday (it was too damn adictive so I finished in two days ). I really love this game. It has a great atmosphere and I really felt like I was Batman. I must say that I almost shit a brick during
Spoiler:
the third Scarecrow nightmare. I thought my PS3 just crashed in a major way and was just in shock. I was so relieved when I saw the opening cinematic start up. When that happened I realized that the game was fucking with me. And seeing the Joker driving the Batmobile a few seconds later confirmed it for me.

Brilliant game. Sadly, the Joker challenge maps really suck. X-Box gamers aren't missing anything. He's good in a bare knuckle fight but totally worthless in the stealth segments. As dangerous and imposing they make you feel as Batman, it's a shame they didn't make the Joker feel lethal and cunning during his missions. In fact, it makes you wonder how he ever took over the asylum.

The only other disappointments were that
Spoiler:
Bane
was a pathetic boss and you
Spoiler:
don't really get a boss fight per se with Harley.

Anyhoo, I do have a plot-centric question.
Spoiler:
How did Dr. Young expect the Titan formula to cure the inmates?

Being a comic book fan, I'm aware that Venom boost the mind as well as the body. However, that fact seems to have been comepletely ignored in this story. You'd assume that Dr. Young would attempting to create a version of Venom that focused soley on the mind rather than the body. It seems illogical that she essentially turned it into even more of a super steroid when her goal was to cure insanity.

Re: Batman - Arkham Asylum

So I just started playing this and aside from Batman controlling like a bit of a doofus, it's great. My question though is this: Are all the little Riddler extras counting towards your completion percentage? I'll start at 15% and play for three hours and when I save it says I'm only 18% done. I do the Riddler things when I see them but I'm not actively looking for them. Surely this game isn't 30 hours long?

Also, just as a general Batman comment... I know Batman is all noble and better than everyone and won't kill these criminals. But after the Joker has murdered his 100th victim or so, shouldn't Batman just destroy the Joker permanently instead of thinking any kind of rehabilitation will work at that point?

You should watch Batman: Under the Red Hood for the answer to that question...

And so does all the challenge mode stuff. You can finish story mode and only have a completion percentage of around 70%.

Just rent it sometime, awesome flick. And that very question is demanded of Batman at the climax of the film. Very well done...

Here's the critical part of the movie:

Spoiler:
Red Hood tells Batman to come to Crime Alley if he wants the Joker back. Showing up at an abandoned apartment, the Red Hood tosses the Joker on the ground and starts to beat him with a crowbar, similar to how the Joker treated him five years before. By the time Batman arrives the Red Hood is finished and waiting for Batman to arrive. There is a quick flashback of the day Batman first met Jason, when Jason tried to steal tires from the Batmobile until Batman arrived. After this, the Red Hood and Batman fight it out and end up on a rooftop of a church. The Red Hood takes off his helmet and reveals he truly is Jason Todd. After another short fight, Jason jumps through a window and back in the room where the Joker was being held. The three finally are able to talk. Jason confronts Batman saying that he had always forgiven him for not saving him, but is furious over the fact that he still allows the Joker to live. Batman confesses that he always wanted to kill the Joker to avenge the lives he has taken, but rejected that path knowing the consequences. Jason then tosses Batman a gun and tells him he must shoot the Joker or him. Batman refuses and turns his back. Enraged, Jason then shoots at Batman, however he misses and Batman throws a small batarang into the barrel of the gun. The gun explodes, thus incapacitating Jason. Jason then sets off a bomb he had previously planted in the room. The Joker maniacally attempts to stop Batman from defusing it so he can finally "be the only one who gets what he wants" that night, but is subdued. The bomb goes off, and this time Batman succeeds in saving Jason's life from the explosion, but Jason is nowhere to be found afterward.

That's the gist of it, but the movie goes into more detail. Something along the lines of...
Spoiler:
...Batman thinks about killing Joker every day, but he knows if he goes down that path, he'll never be able to stop.

Thanks. Maybe I will rent it... I thought it was a comic book -- which is something I never got in to.

Re: Batman - Arkham Asylum

So, I got sidetracked by Uncharted 2 last year when I was in the middle of playing this game. Decided to start over about a week ago and play through it. Loved it! I got all the Riddler Challenges too. But wouldn't you know it, even though I was pretty sure who I needed to track down to get the last Chronicle of Arkham, I couldn't for the life of me remember where that person was! Had to look up that little tidbit of info, which I felt stupid about, but oh well. I'm not gonna bother with the challenges, kinda burned out... Looking forward to the sequel!

Played the demo for this one, and it was fun; I've added this to my to-buy list, right after I beat Red Dead Redemption.

It's loosely based on a comic story arc.

You mean "after you beat Red Dead Revolver" right? Because nothing you pst about has anything to do with 2010.

Re: Batman - Arkham Asylum

This finally popped up to the top of my queue, and I finished the main story last night.

Great game all around -- I wish I'd played it earlier. The makers have truly captured the world of Batman, and allowed you to feel like you're playing as him. Variety of gameplay, perfect tone, and an interesting setting all come together nicely. Plenty to do during the game, and lots to go back to after you're done playing.

Bring on the sequel!

I played through it about a month ago and if we redid our votes for GotY from last year this would have gotten my vote.

You do get the trophy/achievement for beating them. Practice on some of the combat challenges. If you're adequate at the challenges you can take out the welcoming committee.
