I got my order in, now whether they honor it or not, we shall see.

Maybe a backend update to prepare for the Fall Update?

*edit: yep

http://majornelson.com/archive/2008/...gust-2008.aspx

A few minutes ago, the team released a system update for the Xbox 360 over Xbox LIVE. Sometime over the next few hours when you sign in to Xbox LIVE you’ll recieve a prompt to accept this mandatory update. This update contains code to 'prepare for future growth of the service'. There are no other changes or enhancements in this update…in other words no new features.

To be clear: This is not the new Xbox experience update. That will come in the Fall.

I just got the "It's on its way home email" so I should have my baby back on Monday. That's a door-to-door turnaround time of two and a half weeks. Not too shabby.

I've been amusing myself in the meantime playing Pain on the PS3. What a hoot.

OK. My 360 is still acting wiggy. It is either severely distorted or the screen looks really (bright white) when I turn it on. No rings yet. It's a launch 360 and this is the first problem I have ever had with it but it happens now 80% of the time I turn it on.

Short story long, I am headed to BB to get an Elite. I have almost 100 RZ bucks that expire this weekend so I figured what the hell. I'll just put the old 360 in the bedroom and use it until it dies, then donate it to a friend and let them deal with the repairs from MS.

OK. Is there any production date I should look for on the new xbox? Is transferring downloads from one xbox to the other as easy as the website says (transferring licenses)? How about all my game saves? How do I transfer those?

Any advice you guys can give is always appreciated! :-)

Yeah, the DRM tool will transfer your licenses, though if you sign into live all the time anyway, it shouldn't matter (in fact your friend might enjoy the gift of games for the time being).

You'll need a transfer cable to move all the data on the 20gb drive to the elite's 120gb, though. Unless you have a memory card and do it bit-by-bit with both 360s working.

Keep in mind there are rumors of price cuts on the 360 line in the next month, give or take. It might only be the arcade to $199, but it might be the 60gb to $299 and possibly the elite to $399.

Hang onto your receipt for a price match, if necessary, and be prepared to argue retail cost vs. sale cost after your RZ coupons get applied. BB is a nightmare about that at the customer service desk, in my experience.

Thanks! I have to order the cable from MS??? I do stay logged into Live so I guess I'll see how that works. The only thing I have on my 360 are Downloaded games, saves, and updates. It looks like some of the games are bigger than 64mb so I don't think the memory card will work.

Thanks again!

Games you can just redownload. In fact, you can see your entire download history from the account management portion of your profile or the XBLM blade (I forget which).

You can borrow a cable from anyone if you can find it.

Cool! My main concern are game saves. I do NOT want to have to play some of these games from the beginning! Lol!

Thanks again!

OK I'm an idiot. I now see how small the game saves are. I borrowed a friends 512gb mem card so I should be good to go.

OK last question for the night. Do I have to move my gamer profile as well? Copy is not an option. Thanks in advance!

Mine work fine after the update. You can try to clear the cache. Go to the system blade and then select memory. Press Y on the HD symbol and then press X,X,Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X,X. Once you do this a messsage will appear saying: Do you want to perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices? This will delete all of your game patches but will not erase any saved game data.

Yes, you can only have one copy of your profile on your memory devices. The alternative is to download it from Xbox Live, but that took forever the last time I tried it (over an hour).

The $299 Xbox Elite from Dell shipped today, so now I have a dilemma to either sell it or keep it. My main concern is my 20gb, does it have enough storage for all the future Rock Band/Guitar Hero DLCs, plus the GTA download that's suppose to come out.

Looks like Viva and Banjo are leaning towards a $39.99 SRP. There was that Gamestop listing a month back for them and now Newegg is offering them for $36.99 each. Not only that if you sign up for MS Live Search you can get 5.5% back on it. (thanks CAG!) Newegg also has a few other notable games with a few dollars off. Shipping kinda offsets it, but the cash back saves you a few bucks in the end.

I ordered both and canceled my Gamestop order.

I might pick up Viva 2 if it's that cheap.

Not to mention the fall update will open the ability to copy games to the hard drive for faster loading, and from what I noticed on the PS3 if you were playing even 2-3 games regularly the images on the HD could be ~12 gb. On the MS 20gb you only have 13gb free anyway (with the system/bc partition taken out).

Sell your other one. If you don't, you will regret it bigtime. I just went through the upgrading process once I realized how much memory RB/GH/COD was requiring. It is good to know that I no longer have to worry about it. In addition, HDMI is nice.

I don't know if I'm alone here but there was a pretty cool announcement at E3 that I missed. MS is launching an online version of the XBLA marketplace. You think, 'eh, so what. Wait, there's more! You are going to be able to queue up your downloads online and your console will automatically download it(assuming it is on). I think this will be a great way to avoid peek download times. I love my Tivo Central Online, so I can't wait to try this one out.

Pardon me if I'm clueless and missed a previous post about it.

that's a pretty nifty feature, but, will we have to leave our xbox on all the time w/ the power green? Talk about a waste of electricity if so.

I figure you could have the 6 hour shut-off feature turned on, flip on the 360 before you leave for work on big D/L days. It would be sweet if there was a way to turn off your system online. Not sure how it will work if your system is off. Will it know to D/L what you queued up when you turn it on? That would still be decent. Queue up your list at work, and just flip the power on when you get home. Maybe a permanent low power mode is in the cards like the Wii.

If anything it will save time browsing through all that content on the console. Going through the game demo section, the spotlight, the XBLA, the free shit, etc. It is a waste of time.

I heard this on Major Nelsons podcast. He also said that hitting the marketplace will be context sensitive. i.e. if you are in Halo 3 and go to the marketplace from the blade it will automatically take you to the Halo 3 DLC.

I like this also because sometimes when I don't download stuff for awhile I end up wanting to dl a bunch it would be easier to navigate on a site, and pick exactly the order I want to download them

Would the queue limit still be 6 items? Seems like a pretty worthless feature either way.

Good question. I hope they expand it because like Spicoli, I check the marketplace very infrequently and tend to pile up my downloads.

Well, until MS can get their shit together hardware wise there's no way in HELL I'd want my 3rd 360 to have a permanent standby mode. I know it's not really discussed much, but the Wii gets very hot when in permanent standby mode. I don't have enough faith in MS/360 to risk this.
