The main riff of Cherub Rock is a complicted mess of three fingered chords when the actual riff is just a two fingered octave chord moved up and down the neck. Same thing with the disturbed and slipknot songs, which are both variations of a drop d tuning, so those main riffs are only played with one finger instead of these complex 3 finger chords and weird changes. It seems the simplest songs to play in real life get the more complicated charts in this game. There's a bunch more songs that are like this as well, but I haven't played the game since Christmas so i can't really think of what they are.

Thanks for the examples. I'm going to have to check out tabs on these songs and compare them to the note charts in the game.
I've just found holding real guitar chords way harder than anything the game has thrown at me and the simple 5 buttons on the controller, so I've never understood the gripe. |
Semi-off subject...I think the achievements on GH3 are as rediculous as some of the high-tier songs. Gold star 20 songs on expert?? Play a career lefty & righty??? Win 15 consecutive online songs??? Win 15 consecutive ranked online songs using A STANDARD CONTROLLER????????
Who the fuck are these achievements for? These are as crazy as some of the charts, in my opinion. As said before, they took the 'fun' out of the game and said "Here bitches, try to do this shit!!" Who in the Hell has enough time to even try to get some of these achievements? Now I'm sure there are some die-hard virtuoso GH players that can handle anything thrown at them, and I can respect your skill & dedication, but GH3 is not for your run-of-the-mill GH player. I completed GH2 down to the last set of expert (after lots of practice), but I can't even get through hard on GH3. |

Where's the tracklisting for the Aerosmith edition? It comes out in a month and there's no tracklisting yet?!?!?

As for the basis that "GH3 is not for your run-of-the-mill GH player," that is strictly absurd. I began on GH2, and managed medium decently, but could not even begin to think about playing on hard. However, once GH3 came out, I beat medium quite deftly, and jumped into hard. I've since beaten hard, and have begun a career on expert. For the record, I have friends who play actual guitar, and those same play Guitar Hero, and they prefer GH3 over GH2. GH3, for me, a superior game, regardless of the charting. I play the game to enjoy myself, not because I care about a realistic guitar experience. Have fun. Enjoy the game for what it is; a game. |
I just hope there's no more fucking boss battles.

the article says there are bosses, but the battle mechanic has been moved to multiplayer only.
|
I think the achievements in both GH games are ridiculously hard. They cater strictly to expert players only. Rock Band is a little better.

I think it's all part of a bigger problem linked to Activision's takeover of the franchise. Harmonix made a pretty cool music game. Once Activision got ahold of it, they turned it into a video game. So they made the fingering charts into a bunch of random button mashing, threw in a retarded storyline and a ton of cutscenes, and boss battles. Fucking BOSS BATTLES! We can hope that Activision has seen the error of its ways, but I doubt it. I think they're still going to try to appeal to the "hardcore" gamer rather than try to keep GH "real." |
I guess I'm in the minority, but I prefer the looser timing window of GH3 balanced out by the tougher charts.
|
The looser timing window bugs me on top of the charts, because I never feel like the playing is tight enough. Throws my rhythm off.
|
That's why I prefer the Hyperspeed "cheat." It gives you a visual on how far in front/behind the note you're hitting. In Rock Band, I find myself strumming nearly all the HO/PO as I find it easier to time the strums, not the frets themselves. Although, to be fair, I have to do the HO/PO on the Rock Band controller which makes it a lot harder due to the frets not being raised like on the GH3 controller. If I had the 360 version or Activision/Harmonix/whomever stopped screwing the consumer, I might not have such an issue with the HO/PO setup in Rock Band.
|
I haven't tried the hyperspeed mode, but you shouldn't have to unlock a secret mode just to be able to actually play the game.

Check out the Sublime haters wearing it like a badge of honor. Oooooh, you're SO anti-mainstream! |

Can't be bothered to read the whole thread...just popped in to say:
Pass. This sounded better when it was called Rock Band. |

Wow. I don't get the hate. Just a harmless band that left a brief blip on the music radar. Oh well.
|
I like Sublime, but their music isn't exactly challenging to play... at all. Good, chill music though. That said, I agree with L&Os assessment that radio killed the 90s rock. Tool is one of my favorite bands, but after a week of hearing the same two songs on the radio even I had enough.
GH4 still isn't sounding so promising, I want the drum peripheral more than I want the game itself. And Guitar Hero Encore: The 80s sold 840,000 copies in the US. That's not exactly bombing. Considering GH2 on the PS2 sold 3.58m copies, and considering the 80s is a love it or leave it decade for music, that's pretty damned impressive (I chose leave it, had it been the 70s or 90s, or even some different 80s songs, I may have considered it... even at the $50 price tag) |
