Maybe GameStop's just the corporate, video game version of Championship Vinyl.

This is why almost all of the Gamestop's suck. You really have no idea how much the customer appreciates an honest salesperson who won't sell them a crappy game and will suggest a much better one. We obviously were not rude about it, and would educate them as to which titles are better. That's kind of the point of a specialty store. We seriously stole the business of almost every store in town because of this, and were top 20 in the company the last 3 years (out of over 5000+ stores) so it definitely works :)

Not trying to defend the company or anything, I don't even work there anymore. Just trying to defend not selling crap to customers and having them leave happier.

Too bad the corporate side of the company is the worst I have ever had the pleasure of working for :)

Let me tell you something. This may be hard to grasp, but, if someone comes into your store looking for a title, and you have it... you ring them up. SALE. More money in the register. For you to try and dissuade someone from buying a product they feel they want, may cause you to actually lose a sale. At the time of sale, try to see if they want to reserve a game or want the Edge Membership. OR, you can try to sell them some other game that's similar on TOP of what they're buying, and you can see if they'd like a used copy in order for you to make a larger profit.

Mind if you tell me which store is yours, so I can look it up for myself next time I go in to work? I smell BS when you say your practice made your store the best one in the company.

I guess you guys just can't grasp how money and sales in the register has NOTHING to do with what I am saying. I could care less if I sold someone a $20 game instead of the $60 shitty one they came in to buy, I don't own Gamestop. I did this on a daily basis. Our honesty made them return to us over and over and spend WAY more than the original $60, which they would have been pissed off about. If someone hold up "Two Worlds" and asks if it's good and wants to buy it, of course I'm telling them it's complete garbage and selling them something like "Fable" instead. I don't see why this is hard to understand. I wish more places did this...

As to the second part, I unfortunately have no way of showing you how we ranked each year. I can tell you that after only 1 month, my old store looks like shit now and ranks poorly.

EDIT: Best I could find was my store on the back of our NASCAR for being awesome. I assume he crashed and lost the race...

I'm not trying to bag on you, but there is a clear difference in giving some general guidance in a purchase and ridiculing someone for their taste in games.

Exactly! The story posted, if real, was terrible and those guys were rude. High Fidelity was also very rude...but funny.

I would only offer an opinion when asked when I was managing a game store. I didn't want someone to come back and complain about if I said something was good but they didn't like it. Generally I would just point them to the gaming magazines for reviews about stuff.

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII

Right. The wrong way to sell a game, even if done in a nice way, is to inform someone who wants to buy a game that the game they're buying isn't up to snuff, and that so-and-so game is better. That's completely subjective. Completely. Instead, you could say, "So, are you typically into these types of games? Because you know what I really enjoyed?..." And then tell them about the better game and intrigue them. That way, you may even get two sales, instead of zero. I'm tired of walking into game shops and dealing with employees that act like they know everything there is to know, or that their opinion is so much more authoritative than mine.

since you hate 80% of the games you play, and barely like the other 20%...how did you ever sell any games?

When I worked for the Devil (Gamestop) I remember my DM told me NEVER to interfere with a customer's purchase. Everybody's tastes are different.

This was right when True Crime: Streets of LA came out, and the game was garbage but thanks to heavy marketing and the GTA craze people wanted to buy it. I told a customer it stunk and he shouldn't waste his money on it. The customer didn't purchase it. Now I had no right to "refuse" his business, and I learned from that. For all I know that customer could have went down the street to FYE and bought the game for a cashier who couldn't give 2 shits about what he was buying.

I remember going to FuncoLand as a kid with my saved up money and I wanted to buy Blast Corps on N64. I remember the cashier refusing to sell it to me because it stunk. Now maybe he just didn't want to see a kid waste his money on a crap game, but still, he shouldn't have said a word.

In fact, i'm waiting for the day a cashier makes a negative comment about a game/movie i'm buying so I can call over their manager and tell them I am taking my business elsewhere.

Proof right there that injecting your opinion of a game to a customer is wrong. Clearly that Funcoland employee was a moron that had no better taste in games than the customers.

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII

A couple of years ago I was going to buy whatever the current version of Madden was for PSP at the time. The guy in Gamestop refused to sell it to me, on the grounds that there was no Franchise mode, or any other mode for that matter. He said the only option was for Quick Play single player matches. When I pointed out the back of the case describing Franchise mode, he told me that EA didn't care about PSP and just re-used the copy from the console version case. So I went across the street to Walmart, where they sold me a special version of the same game that had the Franchise mode that I knew it had.

It still blows my mind that Gamestop employees lie to customers, and when they get caught in the lie just keep pushing it to the point of losing the business. I've never experienced this anywhere else but Gamestop. Is it some kind of specialty store pride to not admit when you're wrong? And how much bad advice have they given to people that don't know better? Just a couple of weeks ago I was in there to try and use a gift card on something and the clerk flat out told me I was lying when I turned down his offer to pre-order the reprint of Super Mario All-Stars for Wii because I already had it from the first release. "You don't have it, trust me, it's rare," he said.

I went to a Funcoland when Ocarina of Time came out, and asked specifically if I needed a memory card for the game, and was told that I did so I bought one. Last time I ever listened to a game store employee instead of doing the legwork myself (which is much easier these days).

I only offer my opinion when someone asks. If someone comes in wanting a shitty product, I sell them that product.

There's a few people on this board that would disagree with you on that game.

discostu, did you have any input into the orders? Like would you order more copies of Fable and less of Two Worlds because you considered Fable to be a better game, and knew you would steer customers to it?

GameStop tried to push me into buying Homefront today. I had a few minutes to kill during lunch and wandered into one. An employee came up to me and asked me what I was going to buy. I said "likely nothing. Just looking around." She asked me what games I'd played lately, and I said Crysis 2 and Bullet Storm. "Oh, well, then you have to buy Homefront. It is so much better than those games. Want me to ring you up?" I replied that I heard it was actually not very good and not worth $60. "Nonsense. It's awesome! So, do you want me to ring you up?" No, I don't and left.

Mind you, I'd already purchased Homefront and sold it off. I did not like it.

This doesn't have anything to do with GS, but is sorta on topic. I once went to a Denny's and was looking to try something different, so I told the waitress I'd like to try the green beans as a side. Well, she went off bashing them, told me they were horrible and straight from a crappy can, and flat out refused to allow me to order them.

On the very few occasions where a waitress told me not to order something and I didn't listen, she has been right 100% of the time.

It strikes me as more sensible to follow the advice of a waitress about food than the clerk at gamestop about games.
