I find it funny how you always make it sound like whenever a GameStop employee provides even a basic level of customer service, they are going so far out of their way and we should be ever so grateful for taking that sliver of time out of their hectic and demanding job. It's the pitch perfect parody of the attitude of the chain and its employees that personifies why they are generally hated by educated consumers.
Back on topic, I suppose the guy could have said he was going to replace it with a used one and saved you a trip. Either way, I'm done popping in here. Enjoy bashing Gamestop... |

I called GS and the guy told me to just bring it in and they'd swap it out, no need to return the entire package. I took it in and the guy proceeds to offer me a pre-owned white controller in exchange for my new black controller. I said "no thanks, I'll exchange it through Microsoft" and walked out.

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
Nice.
My Gamestop red/black exclusive controller is having right analog issues(loose). It's nearly a year old, I guess there is no chance in hell of returning it to either GS or MS and getting the same one back. Unfortunate because it has my favorite texture of all the controllers. |

Man arrested in Roseville Galleria fire and evacuation ROSEVILLE - Police have arrested Alexander Piggee after a standoff and fire at the Westfield Galleria at Roseville. After Piggee was in custody, the danger wasn't over. Even though thick smoke poured out of the roof, firefighters were kept from going inside because of a backpack Piggee left behind and the possibility of an explosive device. Roseville Police Lt. Michael Doane said the bomb squad was getting ready to examine the backpack, but the fire flared up and technicians were forced to retreat for their own safety. Pigee did not make any bomb threat, but he claimed to be carrying a gun, according to police. For more than four hours, smoke poured from the roof of the mall, even though sprinklers were activated inside. Division Fire Chief Dennis Matheson said crews were kept from the fire because the bomb squad had not given an all-clear signal. According to Lincoln Fire Chief Dave Whitt, crews are battling the flames from outside the mall. There is also significant flooding reported on the first floor. Whitt said he's paged off-duty firefighters from Placer and Sacramento counties to head to the galleria to assist in the battle. Whitt stressed the importance of police and firefighters working under a unified command and said, "The one thing we want to do as firefighters is to make sure we do not destroy evidence on the scene." The mall was evacuated Thursday morning after Alexander Piggee allegedly started a fire inside an electronics store on the second floor, then barricaded himself. Piggee who was speaking incoherently went into the GameStop store around 10:30 a.m., according to Roseville police. Store employees told police he started a fire in the store and he claimed to be armed. Police say Piggee barricaded himself in an area just outside the store and started several other fires before he was arrested. Officers say Alexander Piggee faces charges of aggravated arson and criminal threats. A police spokesman said there were no reports of hostages or injuries during the standoff. As far as reports of gunfire, the spokesman said an officer used a "non-lethal device" to break a window, but no shots were fired. The corporate office for Westfield Galleria at Roseville had no comment on the fire or the arrest. |
Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
I guess this little Piggee's going to jail.

Balloon stunt raises anger in San Francisco
by: Mike Smith A publicity stunt intended to advertise upcoming shooter Homefront ended up backfiring this week when 10,000 red balloons, released by publisher THQ into the San Francisco skies, wound up in the waters of the Bay itself, angering local environmentalists. Scheduled for release on March 15, Homefront takes place in 2027, and sees a belligerent and heavily armed North Korean army invades the mainland of the United States. The balloons were released in a mock protest against the game's fictional North Korean regime, and coincided with this week's Game Developers Conference taking place in downtown San Francisco. But what goes up, must come down -- and thanks to San Francisco's notoriously dreary weather, it didn't take long for the thousands of balloons, weighed down by windy, rainy conditions, to wind up touching down in the Bay. Pictures of balloon-covered waters flooded the Internet, and local residents took to Facebook to express their outrage. The balloons carried the name of retailer Gamestop, but in a statement the retailer denied responsibility, saying it had no prior knowledge of the stunt and pointing the finger at publisher THQ instead. And THQ? In a statement, the publisher's vice-president of corporate communications, Julia MacMedan assured concerned San Franciscans that the balloons wouldn't be troubling them for long. "The balloons that were released are completely biodegradable," she told Cnet. "They start the process of biodegrading as soon as they're blown up with the helium. There should not be any environmental concerns." Regardless, the publisher has hired a clean-up crew to deal with the mess. Local environmentalists weren't impressed, pointing out that, biodegradable or not, the latex balloons could still pose a threat to wildlife while they undergo the decomposition process -- and Cnet further observes the culprits could face prosecution under anti-littering laws. --- No idea of the stunt? Seriously? |
Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
Never release more than 99 red balloons.

I am like what the fuck are you doing really loudly and there are a bunch of people in the store. "I'm not buying it if it's an opened up," she's like "Really" as if I'm asking for Mohammed. I tell her that I am tired of this shit that you guys pull. Everytime I want to buy a new game they try to pawn me a used copy. I walked off but I think I scared a few people from buying there again. I have a question, isn't that illegal when they try to do that? Shouldn't they be fined for shit like that? It does seem wrong, and I just know that the employees all play these games before the release date and just claim that they're still new, which bugs the shit out of me. I love it when discostu hotly denies that theory, yet always posts impressions of games a few days before they're released. |

Thank you. I just went through this today with YDKJ. I asked "Don't you have a new copy?" and she replied "This is a new copy". I said "It's open; how do you consider it new? What defines a used copy then". She gave me the party line that this wasn't a used copy, they just put the packaging out for display, that the game has never been played, etc. Basically, the usual BS. Anyway, I just bought it because I'm a sucker and wanted it at that price (plus the used copies are only $2 cheaper anyway).

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
EB Games used to have a game checkout policy for employees, but IIRC, that was relegated to used games only when Gamestop took over.
Of course, that might not stop specific store managers from bending the rules here and there, but it's not the official policy. |

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
A couple of years ago I bought the only in-stock new copy of "My French Coach" for Nintendo DS at a local Gamestop, and it was also opened. I seriously doubt any Gamestop employee had taken that one home for a night of fun, so maybe they really do just open their new games for whatever unknown reason.

Option B is going to be the choice almost every time. Honestly, most of the time I don't have an issue with it but I can certainly understand some of the frustration too.
I understand that this is how Game Stop displays their games, but it's less than ideal. You know how I know that nobody already played my new game when I buy it at Best Buy, Amazon, Target or Kmart? It's sealed. You know how I know at Game Stop? I don't. That's the problem. They throw a little clear sticker over the opening and claims it makes the game new. That's bullshit. |
Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
I'm not sure if it's been mentioned in this thread before, but GameStop should come up with something when you are buying a "new" game that has been opened for display purposes, then it should be sold as an "open-box" item for a few dollars less. Sears, Walmart, Target, Best Buy all sell "open-box" electronics and occasionally the display models too, and you don't ever see anybody getting all upset over it.
It's for this reason why I will never purchase a new game from GameStop. Theres been plenty of times when I went to buy a new game and was offered the "opened" copy because it was all they had left and refused to buy it, unless they would lower the price (which they did one time). I'll gladly give my business to Best Buy or Amazon, atleast I know the copy I'm getting will be sealed. |

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
That's the kicker. They're pretty much the only company that does this, and it's not like they don't have to spend time doing this (separating out the instructions and game) for every single release. Plus it ticks people off. Policies aside, how do you guarantee that the game was never played?
This also seems to happen a disproportionate amount of the time, at least for me. I don't go into Gamestop often, but I swear at least 50% of the time I'm getting the "last" copy. As for the balloons thing, I'm still not clear why Gamestop was on the balloon if they didn't at least sponsor the event. Do they have some side business selling balloons to videogame publishers or something? I'm not saying they were involved in the stunt, and they obviously don't want to be involved with it, but just odd. |
Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
By now, isn't everyone aware of whether or not Gamestop is a place they want to shop? It really is on you if you go there and are unhappy with how they get down, no?
