Beats me. I have a friend (mid 30's) who always complains about not having money (yes, sad). Anyway, I tell him about all these deals at Amazon, K-Mart, BB, etc. and he still goes to Gamestop. He probably buys 1-2 big releases a month and cashing in on all these deals would save a ton. I don't get it.

Why woulld anybody buy from Gamestop? How does this company survive with Amazon and Kmart giving FREE money away with just about every single big pre-order?? Gamestop offers a "skin" or "weapon" and people fall for that over $20??

How would you like to buy a brand new car that just got thousands of dollars in body repairs because it got hit while unloading?

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
Not surprised. This is exactly the type of shenanigans people complainin about Gamestop's open-box "new" game policy were worried about. The next logical step is to charge the consumer for the free DLC that's included in most new games. After all, those are thrown in to discourage you from buying used, which is Gamestop's bread and butter. I doubt they'd have any trouble doing the mental gymnastics to justify that one.

Yeah, but most people would still buy a brand new car if it had say 100,200 miles of test driving. Most of the time their "opened" new games are just the same as a "New" car with test drive miles. I understand it is still wrong but that was the incorrect analogy. :D

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
The gutted games thing is annoying, but there's a big leap between buying a game that is new except someone opened the shrinkwrap before you and buying a game that is missing items intended to be in the box.

Where does pre-played by an employee fit into that equation? ;)

I haven’t preordered a game from Gamestop since the limited edition of the first Bioshock for 360. I still don’t understand why someone would actually pay them and walk out of the store with an open product that they bought brand new. Even if they don’t care, it’s the fact that it’s just wrong.

These are the same customers who will pay 55 bucks for a used game to save 5 bucks. I mean, I've never known anyone that did that, but someone's got to, right, otherwise why would they price it that way?

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
Well, now Gamestop has pulled all copies of Deus Ex for PC from their shelves and website. According to the memo sent out to the stores, they have agreed with Square Enix to send all their copies back.
Also in that memo, they said they started removing the codes because they were to download the game on a cloud based service that would compete with their own, yet to be launched, service. http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/24/ga...s-from-shelve/ |
Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
They're not even going to carry it? That's hilarious! Good, now people can go get it from a company that doesn't fuck with the product and Gamestop can lose all that potential revenue.
Then again, it's PC so that's probably not a huge amount of money lost compared to the consoles. |
Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
I have no problem with them not carrying the game for PC. If that's their corporate decision, that's theirs to make. But to remove value added content from their consumers' purchase is pretty inexcusable.

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
I'll bet square said that either they stop gutting them, or send them back, or else they would not be sending them anymore games. Gamestop probably bitched out like normal lol
|
Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
Gamestop really doesn't want to screw with Square. If they decided to cut them out of future game distribution, Gamestop would be looking at a big loss of revenue.

I only buy from gamestop when I have a gift card from erewards.

Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
The biggest problem I have with the gutted games is how can you prove that the game is still brand new if you wanted to return it? They will say it's been opened. My last purchase was a year ago. They gave me a gutted game and forgot to put the freaking disc in it!
I don't even buy used there anymore before they rarely if ever have used sales or coupons anymore. |
Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
LOS ANGELES (August 24, 2011) — Square Enix, Inc., the publisher of SQUARE ENIX™ interactive entertainment products in the Americas issued the following statement today to customers who have bought the PC version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution™ from GameStop stores in North America: “As part of Deus Ex: Human Revolution’s boxed offering on PC, Square Enix included a third party coupon. GameStop was not made aware of this inclusion and Square Enix respects the right of GameStop to have final say over the contents of products it sells and to adjust them where they see fit in accordance with their policies. Square Enix invites gamers who want to purchase the PC version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution without additional coupons to buy the game at any one of over 4000 GameStop stores in North America or purchase a digital download copy online from www.gamestop.com.” |
Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
Wow. I had no idea GameStop had that much control over that stuff.
I'll keep buying shrinkwrapped games from other retailers. |
Re: GameStop is Vile and Disgusting Part XXVII
In another long line of awful decisions from Square Enix, they decide to bend over for GameStop. Unreal...
