Have you tried temporarily connecting the same cable up to the tv to see if you get the same results? It would take the receiver and analog->hdmi conversion out of the equation. I would assume there are at least side ports you can tap into.

Wait, you aren't using the component cables, just the standard composite? That's the problem. Composite won't give you 16:9, AFAIK. Converting composite-> HDMI doesn't sound optimal either. Gotta use that component cable.

I think you can get 16:9 out of composite, just not 480p.

Still, I don't think I've heard of a receiver that can't pair a component video input with an analog audio input. Something like "Component In 2 + VC2-2 Audio = Wii". What receiver are you using so we can find online user manuals and panel pics?

I would bet dollars to doughnuts that composite will give you a 4:3 box on an HDTV.

I never tried, but I distinctly remember other people saying they could do that, which I thought odd. Maybe their TVs were just stretching, I don't know. I don't have to know. I live in the present.

So my original suggestion stands: hook it up directly to the TV and see what's going on.

You owe me dollars. Or doughnuts. It can, but just not in 480p. I used that for a few months on my older 42" HDTV (now relegated to my bedroom) before I picked up a composite set from Monoprice. Besides, before the latest trip to adjust things, my A/V guy had the component cable hooked up (wrong). I got no sound, but still got a 4:3 picture, unaffected by changing the settings, to my HDTV through the HDMI output from the receiver.

I'm sure plugging the Wii cables into the TV would work fine, but everything is mounted and put away. But this process has become muy expensive and a HUGE project. Seriously, between the two rooms, this A/V guy has been at our house for like two and a half weeks setting everything up. So there's no way I'll be having the Wii outside of the closed-off cupboard to the side of the mounted family room tv, even if I have to (rarely) play the Wii in 4:3. Luckily, the Kinect fit when hot-glued to the top of the 55" Vizio that was mounted into the mantle. It has like 1/4" clearance when fully panned down.

My family room receiver is the Yamaha RX-V665. I'll find a picture of the back and post it. Thanks for everyone's help.

There is a firmware update for that receiver that will let you assign a different audio input to a component input.

When I got my Wii, the only way to get component cables was to have Nintendo mail them to you. So I had it in Composite 480i for a few days. 16x9 worked fine, and actually looked pretty descent.

I think the 16:9 is probably getting broken when your a/v receiver converts it to hdmi out, so getting the firmware updated might fix that part too, and also allow you to use component.

Just started reading about this Wii 4:3 non 16:9 fiasco, and my input,

Did you change your settings on your Wii to 16:9, through the Wii menu?

Well, when it's set to 16:9, does the image look distorted, as in stretched vertically? When set to 16:9, the Wii is putting out the same 640x480 resolution as when it's set for 4:3, and the TV is supposed to stretch that across the screen. Maybe the receiver is seeing that resolution, deciding it's 4:3 based on that, and then telling the TV it's 4:3. See if you can override that in the TV's settings.

My TV also does not auto switch from 4:3 to 16:9 for the Wii. The way to fix this is to have that input set to "Stretched" or "Full Screen". The Wii sends out a single that is compressed so that it looks correct in 16:9 if the settings on the Wii are set for widescreen.

Anyone play Sonic Colors? Any impressions?

As a Sega (and Sonic) guy from way back it's as close to old school Sonic as your likely to get on the Wii (aside from VC titles ). It's challenging without being too ridiculous. Looks great too!

The original Wii was designed to sit vertically or horizontally (notice that there are feet on one of the large sides, if you have one). So if this new SKU is designed to only sit horizontally, I guess it is different.
