Well, it is a $60 game. It's not like a $10 movie ticket or DVD. I still plan on renting it. Whenever gamefly decides to get their act together.

Amen. My #1 hate on game boards is "Should I buy this game?" "Is it worth it?" "Cancel my pre-order?" etc.

Shit just play the game.

I have much hate for the junk level, but overall I have enjoyed the hell out of it, reviews be damned! But then again I'm the type of gamer that got bored with MGS4.

Bingo! I don't generally go by reviews, but dropping $60 on release week is a big deal if nearly every reviewer out there is dropping a negative review. I can understand a couple oddball reviews, but all the reviewers can't be crazy.

So it goes in the price drop category.

And a game like Mercenaries 2, which is clearly broken is getting great reviews. I just don't get it.

How? Just spend the $60 and hope for the best? Hope that a nearby place has it for rental? Go solely by the demo? I don't see the issue with reading reviews and asking for opinions on a game...

Mercenaries 2 is getting great reviews?

Mercs 2 on Xbox 360 has a 73% average.

Mercs 2 on PS3 has a 74% average.

The original Mercs did substantially better.

Mercs on Xbox has an 86% average.

Mercs on PS2 has an 84% average.

Anyway, I am another person that pays very little attention to reviews. My favorite games are almost always the little known games that the mainstream audience has never even heard of. Games like Thief, No One Lives Forever, Heroes of Might and Magic, Baldur's Gate (the PC games only), Planescape: Torment, Fallout (well technically Fallout 3 is raising awareness of the Fallout series but I still don't think the original two Fallout games ever reached mainstream status). I prefer those games over the GTAs, Halos, and MGSs any day of the week.

Why wouldn't reviews, which are done by some of the only people who have actually played the full game prior to its official release, be a good way to get a better idea of the game? I do think that focusing too much on the score or letter grade is silly (though I find the metacritic score an interesting bit of statistical info), but the actual content of the reviews has the potential to be very helpful. Knowing exactly what somebody else didn't like about a game lets me make a more informed decision.

If the critics are saying, "Final Fantasy 29 is pretty fun and had a lot of potential, but the worst thing is all of the random battles that pop up so we all give it a C," that would probably increase my chance of buying the game, because that's not something that bothers me and if that's the worst thing you can say about the game, then bring it on! On the other hand, if a lot of the critics are saying "Kick-Ass Jedi looks pretty and has a great story, but the controls are incredibly frustrating, so we all give it a C," the chances are good that the controls ARE frustrating; I know that would greatly impact my enjoyment, so it significantly reduces the likelihood of me ever buying the game.

For this particular game, which I was originally thinking would be a day-one purchase, the demo gave me the impression it would be a mediocre game with frustrating controls. Since the majority of reviews seemed to back that up and suggest that the demo was indicative of the end product, I knew it wasn't the game for me at $60.

It's broken? Should I cancel my pre-order?

Since this game is out on 5 systems it might be a good idea to state which system you guys are playing it own since I can't read minds over the internet.

From what I can gather so far the wii version has more levels but levels are smaller and have fewer enemies than the ps3 and xbox 360. I think the guys on 1up said the psp version might be the best version. Might have been another podcast.

This is DVDTalk. We're all talking about the 360 version.

I see your point. Believe me, I have my share of "poorly reviewed" and "hated by the Gaming masses" games that I still love. But let's be honest, in this day and age there's no reason to spend $60 on a game. Period. The price will always drop at some point and if you can play the waiting game then you can save some $$$. Like someone said above, a few oddball negative reviews is one thing; but after all the hype this game has been generating, the high number of bad reviews is a bit of a concern.

The demo was fun but it didn't blow me away. I guess I bought into the hype and I had really high expectations. Those expectations weren't met. Don't get me wrong, it was still kinda fun, but after playing through it a couple times I simply decided it wasn't worth my $60.

This game might not get the great reviews like GTAIV and COD4 got but that doesn't mean it's not going to be fun. Seems like most peoples expectations are too high anymore. If your a Star Wars fan buy or rent it now. Otherwise just wait for the price break. Considering its effectively only $40 after getting the TRU gift card I say it's a pretty good deal right now.

Played this for another 45 minutes last night and it really is quite a bit of fun, despite the flaws. I know I saw several reviews mention that it's too bad you can get through it with the basic powers, as it doesn't force people to use the combos. I have to agree that the combos add a lot of fun if you start using them. I was getting an especially big kick out of the one where you do a double-hit with your lightsaber and then use a force push to send any nearby enemies flying through the air.

This is the first I've heard of thist $20 GC at TRU. Anyone know if you get one for picking it up for Wii since that's $50 and the PS3/360 versions are $60?

Thanks.

Nope. It's for the 360 or PS3 only.

I went with my gut and picked up the game last night. I had a blast with it so far the flaws are there yes, but it's Star Wars and that's good enough for me.

Well I'm done. As seems to be the case with most games lately (maybe I suck) this game is just too damn hard. I've tried to beat the second jedi master about 50 times now and I've had it.

This is fun?

Lower the difficulty level. It's too easy on the lowest setting.

On my first run, I'm playing on easy. I didn't want to get frustrated, and just enjoy it. Plus you feel like a real bad ass Jedi/Sith. And stormtroopers go down with 1 slash.

I mentioned before that this game is definitely more difficult than the demo led me to believe. I'm playing the medium setting, just as I did the demo.

Those Titans and the 2nd Jedi Master did take me about 3 or 4 attempts to beat.

And how is it that everything in the Star Wars universe now has mastery of the Force? ... even the damn robots. To quote Syndrome, "Everyone can be super! And when everyone's super ... no one will be."

The Junk Level was harder for me than fighting the 2nd Jedi Master... It took me 2 damn days to get on to the damn "bridge". Fighting bosses/people are never a problem for me but Ill be damned if jumping on something gives me fits.

I hated the boss on the Junk Planet. Very frustrating fight.
