Rumor: Netflix set to bring rental service to the 360
Posted Feb 15th 2008 2:00PM by Dustin Burg
Filed under: News, Rumors, Video Marketplace

Our current Video Marketplace setup is decent enough allowing Xbox 360 owners to rent movies or purchase television shows a la carte. But think how much better the XBVM service could be if an already popular unlimited movie rental service like, say Netflix, were to be incorporated? Well, that may just happen.

According to Seanbajuice, a random Netflix survey (which was sent out to a select few Netflix subscribers) asks specific questions regarding how likely it would be for one to support Netflix being integrated into the Xbox 360. The survey points out that no additional subscription fees would be required (though, a one time $3 disc purchase may be necessary) and would give unlimited viewing access to Netflix's entire movie and television library streamed straight through your 360. The survey is just a survey, so this is far from being official, but how could anyone be against such a partnership? Heck, if this Netflix / Xbox 360 service ends up becoming a reality, we'd suddenly let go of any negative sentiment we felt towards Netflix for abandoning HD DVD. Our hearts heal fast.

So I stopped in Target today to see if they had any 360's. They had one Arcade, but from what I could see from outside the glass case, the team was not listed as FDOU, and I did not see 175W indicating the newer build.

Funniest part: I look up at the display unit and it's flashing RROD.

I'd so forgive netflix for the HD-DVD betrayal if they offered downloads on the 360.

It would be even sweeter if Netflix would rent Xbox 360 games.

I am pissed they've given up on HD-DVD already... it's what made me leave Blockbuster.com in the firstplace.

A big thumbs up to Netflix on that one. I can't use their online system on my Powerbook, but I'd use it on the 360.

I haven't seen many 360's either, other then a few Halo editions and one or two Arcades.

Microsoft might be telling the truth when they said they underestimated after holiday demand. No wonder the PS3 sold more.

Is it possible there's been a quiet recall of old consoles? I can't believe every Best Buy in the Chicago area is sold out, but that is what the website seems to indicate.

Do you really think something like that could be kept quiet?

Well, no.

Just a thought. I suppose it could also be Microsoft holding back old stock, thus creating a shortage at the moment while newly manufactured boxes are put out.

I hadn't really been looking for one again after Christmas, so I don't know if these stores have been sold out since then, or just recently.

Sure, why not? The RRoD issue was kept quiet for a long time.

In all likelihood, MS planned to keep inventories low... makes sense especially after the holidays. Lots of maybes to add on to that... Maybe they planned on new SKUs but reconsidered after the 1/4/08 Warner announcement. Maybe they caught wind of Sony's plans for new models and are planning accordingly. Maybe they had a manufacturing breakthru and are want to keep inventory of existing stuff low until they can get the newer/better/cheaper out.

I can't see Microsoft keeping inventory intentionally low for the 360. With the Wii kicking it's ass in hardware sales (software is another story) and the PS3 nipping at it's heels, it needs all the sales it can get.

Finding a Wii is just as hard, if not harder than a 360, to find on a shelf right now.

Hey it looks like MS is discontinuing the xbox 360. Maybe they are coming out with a new model soon to replace them. All the current models are marked discontinued on amazon.com.

What the hell are you talking about?

Here's a 20-GB model with HDMI.
And here's the core arcad-bundle.
Both are in stock and ready to ship.

I said they were all discontinued. I did not say they were out of stock. Both of the links you have show them as being discontinued. Do search for the word discontinued on those pages.

Halo 3 edition isn't but all the other ones are, including the newer versions that came out in August of last year. (ie Arcade Bundle)

Maybe they are set to announce something new this week at CES. A redesign/pricedrop or something.

That'd be nice. Maybe it's just a listing error at Amazon.

Wasn't CES in January? I assume this is a typo. Is there another show coming?

That's most likely.

Least likely was that MS was all set to announce/release 360 SKUs that included built-in HD-DVD...but obviously had to skuttle those plans. (hypothetically speaking)
