Worked my way into the top 15 in the DVDtalk group. I didn't think that was even possible given my limited skills.

I've been stuck on the first tier of Hard for a couple weeks and something finally clicked last night. Made it all the way up to the 5th tier. Yea! Granted nearly all are 3 stars, I did manage to get a few 4 stars and beat Tom Morello on my first try. I still suck with the orange button, but I'm getting the hang of it.

Some of the tracks seem unnecessarily hard. Specifically The Seeker, by the Who. Switching what (I assume) be one note patterns to chords, in some places, seemed odd.

I have done this completely backwards. I bought GHIII, played through on Easy, loved it and bought GHII. Played GHII on Easy and am now 5 starring GHII on medium. I was gonna move back to GHIII on Medium but if I ever locate a Rock Band bundle in my area, I don't know when I will return to GHIII.

Thanks for admitting me into the DVDTalk Tour Group.

To me that's the most satisfying part of the game, when you figure something out all of a sudden and passages you didn't think you'd ever play becomes second nature.

I'm currently stuck on the Tenacious D song on hard. And I suspect that after that I'll be stuck on the entire next tier. Up until now there's always been at least one song in each tier which I could get through on the first try, but I think the last eight or nine songs are going to be rough.

Not quite second nature, but sliding my hand down to make orange and keeping my hand there and realizing which fingers are now associated with new notes(index/red, middle/yellow, etc) was sweet. Before it was just a clusterfuck of confusion.

I'm also saving star power for the solos just so I don't fail a song. But I'm getting there. According the TheLiveEye.com, I've logged almost 32 hours in GHIII.

This is my first GH game, so getting all 5-star reviews on Easy and Medium was a feat for me. Now I'm running on 3-star reviews in Hard, but it's because I didn't know about hammering. Now I'm practicing but it really makes a difference!
The sound issue is you only get mono sound when you play, which means no stereo or Pro-Logic II. Activision just announced replacement discs for early 2008 though, so I'm happy

Well, if anyone wants to get any of the co-op achievements like the streaks and the scores, hit me up with an invite since I still play a lot.

I'm down. I'll have to browse the achievements though to see if any of the co-op ones are do-able on medium.

Check it out Michael.

Spoiler:

Enlightened Guitarist 30

Gold Star 20 songs on Expert

Hendrix Reborn 10

Complete Career Lefty and Righty

This achievement is a little glitchy, but keeping all your songs within the same "Band" should make it work properly. All you need to do is enough to get by (3/4) on easy and medium. I suggest picking an easy difficulty and going for 5 Stars on all the songs while you're there.

A little tip, switch it to lefty, and play looking into a mirror, and the notes will appear as you are used to them.

Who Needs the Power 15

200k on Cult of Personality without Star Power

The only difficulties that will net you this achievement are Hard and Expert. Do it it on hard, you will need to hit most of the notes. Or you can do it on expert, hitting a good percentage of the notes. Another key is using Star Power late in the song. If you can use it, and have it still on when the song ends, it will not count as being used, and you can still get the achievement.

Whammy Mania 15

Use the Whammy Bar on every held note on Number of the Beast

First start off with some tape, and tape your whammy bar down. As long as it's not in the normal position it's fine. Now go to quick play or career, and select Number of the Beast by Iron Maiden on Easy difficulty. It can be found in the 8th (Final) tier. Now play the song through, and dont miss any held notes. The achievement should unlock when you are finished.

Star Mania 15

Activate Star Power 3 times on Through the Fire and Flames on Expert

Only obtainable in Quick Play.

Again, just like stated under "Inhuman Rampage Achievement" the beginning is the hardest part. Once you get past it and are good enough, you should be able to get enough Sp Phrases to activate it 3 Times. Use it directly after you fill the meter, so that you dont miss any star notes while you're in Star Power mode.

Life of the Party 10

Host Ranked Online matches and win 15 consecutive songs

This achievement seems hard but really isn't. It can be easily accomplished through quitting. Just play as you would regularly. If you win, continue, and go to your next game, if you lose, go to your dashboard or eject your disk. Dont worry about your opponent, they will still get a win. Keep doing it until you get 15 of them in a row, and move on.

Search and Destroy 10

Join Ranked Online matches and win 15 consecutive songs

See "Life of the Party"

Too Many to Count 25

Hit 250,000 notes in Career

This achievement is cumulative in any Career. This is equivalent to about 500 easy songs, 300-350 medium songs, 250 hard songs and 200 expert songs. Just play the game and try to keep all your songs under the same "band"

Never Gonna Spend It All 10

Earn $350,000 in career lifetime earnings

That's What Friends Are For 25

Complete Co-op Career

To obtain this achievement all you need to do is beat all the Setlists in Co-op. You do not need to complete every song, only enough to get to the next tier. In total you will need to play about 38. The unlocking itself is a little tricky. Only the primary account will get the achievement, and the 2nd controller aka a buddy will not get it.

Back Up Hero 10

Complete all songs as the back-up guitar player

See "Guitar Wizard" except do the Bass, Rhythm or Guitar #2.

Guitar Wizard 10

Complete all Co-op as the lead guitarist

You will have to play and beat all the co-op setlist songs as well as the 14 extra songs as the Lead to obtain this achievement. Just play through co-op and make sure you are always the same controller and the player.

100 Million!?! Gulp!?! 30

Earn 100,000,000 points total in Career

This is a cumulative achievement, in a single Career. You will need to play a whole bunch of songs to get this one, and youre best bet is probably just to have fun playing the game and let it come. If you're really striving for it, play your best song over and over until you get it, just keep it under the same "Band".

Streaker 10

Earn a 150 note streak in a Ranked Online Battle mode match

All this achievement is, is luck and a little bit of skill. You will need to get into a ranked battle game where you know the song relatively well. You will also need to pray that your opponent doesnt hit you with some bad power-ups and lets you finish the notes off. Just play and it should come. Try hosting and picking a song you're good at.

Tone Deaf 5

Beat any song on the expert difficulty with the games sound options turned down to zero

First you will need to become good enough to beat any song on Expert. I recommend Slow Ride by Foghat, as it one of the easiest songs by far. When you are comfortable with this song start it up, and keep all your settings regular. All sounds can be fully turned up. Play the song as you normally would, but as you approach the end, whenever, the closer to the end the better, hit your start button. From their go to settings and then to sound. Change all 3 dials to read 0. Now continue the song, and play the last couple of notes, without any sound. When you finish, you will get the achievement.

Easy Rider 5

Complete a Career on the Easy Difficulty

This should be a relatively easy one for even the starters. All I can say is practice if you cant beat it, and just keep on truckin'. You will get it with a little bit of practice.

Medium Rare 10

Complete Career Mode on the Medium difficulty

Here it gets a little bit harder for those of us who havent had as much time with the game as we would have wanted to. Again, practice if you have any trouble, and you will eventually get it.

Always Hard 15

Complete Career on the Hard difficulty

Here's where practice mode may actually come in handy. If you are a skilled player, you should be able to make it through the most part of this career without a problem, but may run into some difficulties. Head to the practice mode, and slow down the fret board as much as you think is necessary. Just knowing what notes are where helps a ton, because sometimes you just cant see them all when they're coming at you.

*See "Buy a Guitar Already" for an easy achievement once this is obtained.

Right Hand of God 20

Complete Career Mode on the Expert difficulty

Another achievement I cant really help you with, other than wishing you luck. I suggest getting Practice with the Slipnot song and Raining Blood as most people have problems here.

Solo Career 25

Complete all Career difficulties

If you manage to beat Expert, then its smooth sailing from there, as the other difficulties should be a piece of cake for you. Just play through all 4 of them, and you should get this achievement.

Button Masher 5

Win 15 consecutive Ranked songs online using a standard controller
See "Life of the Party"

Buy a Guitar Already 15

Play through a career on the Hard or Expert difficulty using a standard controller

This achievement is glitched, in a way, but it will benefit you. Just beat the career on Hard how you normally would. After you do, shut off your Xbox, and turn it back on with a controller. Go into the game and pretend you are going to play a song, it will unlock for you when you are in the setlist.

Obviously this can also be gotten the regular way, which may be easier for some individuals.

Big 'Ol Pile of Wins 20

Win 500 Online Ranked matches

Theres nothing really I can say hear, can I? Just play a lot. I suggest battle mode because it seems to be the fastest, as you can knock out opponents in seconds rather than playing the whole song through. Just keep playing online, winning as many as you can and its yours. I suggest using an easier difficulty for the Battle mode, if you go hard, you're only screwing yourself over.

The Long Road Ahead 100

Complete all difficulties in Career, buy everything from the shop and complete 100 online matches

This achievement is even harder then it seems.

See "Burnin' a Halo in my Pocket" and "Solo Career", do both of these and win 100 games online, and on of the hardest achievements will be yours.

Meet Your Maker 20

Beat one of the creators of Guitar Hero 3 at their own game

The achievement is not what it actually says. It is rather a viral achievement, like any other. Beat someone with it and you get it. Lose with it, and you give it away. A large percentage of the players already have this, so just hop online and win a game, and it can be yours too.

Bronze Streaker 5

Earn a 100 note Streak in Career or Quick Play

Any song on any difficulty will do. Just get a little bit of practice and get comfortable with the guitar. Play an easy song if you're really struggling.

Silver Streaker 10

Earn a 250 note streak in Career or Quick Play

Now here it gets a little harder. 250 is not a lot, but may get frustrating if you get close many times. Try to pick easier songs have a lot of rhythm based notes, where all you need to do is strum at the right time, and keep hitting the same notes.

Gold Streaker 15

Earn a 500 note streak in Career or Quick Play

Many of the easier songs can do the trick and most of the medium ones can do it as well. I suggest a harder easy song such as One, or an easier medium song such as Story of my Life (704), or When We Were Young.

Streak Master 20

Earn a 1000 note streak in Career or Quick Play

Here it becomes quite a bit of a bigger number from the last one. But there is an easy way out. Through the Fire and Flames on easy contains about 1100 notes. And for those looking for a challenge, because easy doesnt satisfy them, One by Metallica on medium contains about 1200 notes. Pick a song that you are most comfortable with, that has enough notes, and then get all the notes...

First Big Score 5

Score 250,000 on a song

Your first opportunity for this achievement will come early in the medium career. I personally did it on "Story of my Life" by Social Distortion, located in the 4th block of the 1st tier. If you are finding it hard to get it, dont worry you get another chance later on in the career, a lot later. The next doable song for this achievement is One by Metallica. It is the last song on the 8th tier before the final boss battle. You should be able to easily shed out 275,000 if your decent at the song, and use star power in the right moments. After a couple of plays through you should be able to get it.

Half a Mill' 10

Score 500,000 on a song

This achievement is available on TtFaF on Hard, and a handful of Expert songs including: Holiday in Cambodia, Cherub Rock, Before I Forget, Stricken, Knights of Cydonia, Number of the Beast, One, Take This Life, The Way it Ends, Through the Fire and Flames.

Now That's Impressive 20

Score 750,000 on a song

Until Downloadable content, you will literally need to Perfect Through the Fire and Flames on Expert. Knock yourself out.

Axe Grinder 10

Earn 5 stars on all songs on the Easy difficulty

Rock Guru 20

Earn 5 stars on all songs on the Medium difficulty

This is rather an easy achievement. If you are an familiar player with the other games, than you should be able to get this achievement without breaking a sweat. I personally played medium career through once and only went back for two songs. Some songs may become frustrating as you fail them over and over, but you have to practice them. I recommend playing them at a slower speed in practice if you cant get the strumming right.

Shredder 30

Earn 5 stars on all songs on the Hard difficulty

Straight up, just get good, good enough to pass Hard songs with Ease, and 5 Starring them shouldnt be a problem.

Guitar Hero 75

Earn 5 stars on all songs on the Expert difficulty

What can I say, by the time you're here you dont need my help. You know the drill. You have to be good, very good, or you will never see this achievement. All I can recommend, again, is practice if you cant do a song in particular.

Perfectionist 10

100% a song

Pick any song you're comfortable with on Easy. I recommend any of the songs in the first couple of tiers. Just play them without missing a note and it's yours. May need a little bit of practice, but other than that, the achievement is pretty self-explanatory.

Ready to Rock 5

Complete the tutorial

The tutorial this time around has 4 sections. 3 of them are identical to the ones in Guitar Hero II, with even the same dialogue. The other added one is the one about Battle Mode. Just go through all 4 sections until they are all cleared (Red skull beside each section).

Axe Collector 5

Buy all the Guitars from the shop

Youre going to need to get all the unlockable guitars before you can buy them. This is an hell of a task, but once you 5 Star the game 8x, buying is the least of your worries. You will need to get the guitars for 5 starring all difficulties, Co-op Career, and Career.

Track Master 5

Buy all songs from the shop

There are 26 total songs to buy. At $500 each, it'll cost you $13,000 to buy them all. This roughly translates to 5 Starring just under 3 tiers on medium. Or about 2 on hard. Just save up enough money and buy them all.

Got 'em All 5

Buy all characters from the shop

There are 5 total characters to buy from the shop:

Tom Morello ($10,000)

Slash ($10,000)

Lou ($15,000)

Grim Reeper ($10,000)

God of Rock ($20,000)

You will need to buy all 5 of them to unlock the achievement. At first only 2 will be available. Beat the game and the 3 bosses will be available for purchase. They will cost a pretty penny though, $65,000. One play through medium, 5 stars on everything will bank you about $45,000. You can do the rest of the math. Just play, and buy them when you feel that its time.

A Couple of Streakers 5

Earn a 200 note streak in a Co-op match

Im not even going to recommend a song. It will work on anything. If you're having trouble getting it, go on any of the first tier songs on easy, and you should be able to get it in no time.

Two Timer 10

Earn a 500 note streak in a Co-op match

Almost any song on easy will do the trick. I suggest whatever you and your friend are comfortable with.

Dynamic Duo 15

Earn a 1000 note streak in a Co-op match

Seems hard but even less skilled players will easily be able to obtain this achievement. Play the song "When We were Young" by The Killers on medium difficulty. The song has 1047 notes, so will have to play the bulk of it for the achievement, but as long as you can keep in rhythm, it is fairly easy.

Streak Masters 20

Earn a 2000 note streak in a Co-op match

This achievement is easiest in Through the Fire and Flames on easy. Each section has a little over 1,000 notes. Just practice them, and pair up, but dont make any mistakes! For those which need a little bit a challenge in their life, it is also possible on One on Medium. Story of my Life on Expert (Both players) has a total of 2042 notes, and is one of the easier expert songs. Thanks to Birky for the tip.

Millionaire Club 20

Score 1,000,000 on any song in a Co-op match

This will be one of the hardest co-op achievements. You pretty much need to do Through the Fire and Flames, One or The Devil went down to Georgia or The Pretender on Expert (Both) and you cant miss many notes. (95%)

Higher Than Most 20

Score 700,000 on any song in a Co-op match

This is easiest done on One, Number of the Beast on Hard or Through the Fire and Flames on Medium.

Easy Duo 10

Earn 5 stars on all Co-op songs for the Easy difficulty

You can read, right? So you dont need my help for easy.

Medium Duo 20

Earn 5 stars on all Co-op songs for the Medium difficulty

You will need to complete all the Co-op Career songs and the 14 extra songs viewed after the setlist. You will first need to unlock them by going through Career by yourself. You and your friend have to be a least familiar with the game to get this, so get crackin'.

Hard Duo 30

Earn 5 stars on all Co-op songs on the Hard difficulty

The general formula for the 5 Star scores is the song for Career Score x 2. Use the link provided in "Shredder" for a rough view of what you'll need. Gte a friend over, and beat 5 Star everything on Hard.

Living Legends 75

5 Star all Co-op songs on Expert

The general formula for the 5 Star scores is the song for Career Score x 2. Use the link provided in "Guitar Hero" for a rough view of what you'll need.

Leaders of the Pack 10

100% a song in a Co-op match

Again, similar to the one in single player. Just pick a song you're comfortable with, and play it through without screwing up. I suggest a song like When you were Young by the Killers on medium or easy, because its all rhythm, and has barely any "skillful" hand movements.

Two by Four 5

Get an 8X multiplier in a Co-op game

This is a deadly simple achievement. Just get a 4x multiplier in Co-op (By stringing 30 notes together) and activate star power with your guitar or controller at the same time. It will unlock right away. It may take a few tries, but really, does it need explaining?

Half Mill' Club 10

Score 500,000 on any song in a Co-op match

I recommend playing One by Metallica; both on medium for this achievement. Again, its all about the practice. You should be able to get at least the first half of the song without missing a note, as the beginning is relatively basic, if you've seen it before.

Burnin' a Hole in Your Pocket 10

Buy everything from the store

Now this is almost an unachievable achievement for most of us. You will have to buy everything, inlcuding the items unlocked through completing various Careers. You get one Guitar for every difficulty, 5 Stars on every difficulty and for Co-op careers. You will have to unlock all of those before you can buy them, and you can get this achievement when you do. All I can do is wish you good luck.

The Inhuman Achievement 15

Complete Through the Fire and Flames on Expert

The beginning of this song is the hardest part by far. The really good players can beat it on a couple of tries through once they learn the start of it. Study the beginning and play it in practice a couple of times, if you think you have what it takes. If you feel you have the skill, go for it. Theres not much I can say to help.

You can always try it with a friend, and have colours assigned for it to be easier. :P

Secret Achievements

Tail Between Your Legs 0

Refuse a boss battle

You have 3 chances through a career for this achievement. Boss battles are against Tom Morello (2nd Tier), Slash (5th tier) and Lou; Satan at the end. Once the screen prompts you to play, press the Red Fret, and you will be brought to the setlist. From here you can select to go back into the boss battle if you like.

Blowin' It 5

Fail any song 10 times

Go to career and expert. Select any song. As the song starts, strum as fast as you can. You should be able to fail within seconds. Then you will be brought to the failed screen. From their, select retry, and repeat the procedure 10 times.

Almost Got It 5

Fail a song passed 90% completion

Play any song you know, and are good at. I suggest an easy or medium song for less stress. As you approach the end, strum as fast as you can until you fail it.

So all the co-op achievments can be done online and don't have to be done in co-op career mode, except for the noted ones?

Okay...I am getting a little pissed. I am doing the boss battle against Tom Morello on Medium and keep getting beat and don't know why.

I kick his ass the entire song and then he comes back and does some "death drain" on me and I lose...again and again. And I don't understand why.

To be honest, I did the tutorial way back and never really "got it." I beat him on Easy after a few tries but honestly did not know how it happened as it didn't seem like I did anything different from the times I failed. I beat Slash on the first try on Easy so I wasn't able to compare or figure out the point of the boss battle or how to "win" it.

I am picking up the power-ups, hitting a decent amount of notes, etc. but he comes back in the end no matter how far down he is. Would someone kindly explain the point of this boss battle so I can beat him and move on before my head explodes.

Thank you.

From your description, it sounds like you've pretty much got it down. Maybe you just need to try doing something differently. One thing that can work well is saving up three power-ups and then using them one after the other. In some cases, though, using them all at once is better. Like if you had double-notes, difficulty up and whammy bar and used them all at once your opponent would end up missing enough notes to lose.

Against bosses where they keep defeating me, I've focused on getting every power-up that I have a chance at and then deployed them as soon they had a chance to get a power-up - basically to prevent them from using any on me.

What I found, at least on medium, is that any power-up causes the boss to miss a ton of notes. The optimal strategy for me was to save up three power-ups, and deliver them one at a time -- not all at once, but once the last power-up finished up. Basically, you deny them the chance to ever catch up.

Yup - that's how I passed the bosses on Medium - store up at least 2 maybe 3 powerups and let er rip on a section with a lot of notes.

But at what point is the boss considered defeated? When he goes into the red?

It can't be if you finish ahead of him because I am way ahead of him everytime until the dreaded death drain comes to pass and then it says I lose. Argh.

By the way, they did an update to GHIII. Anyone notice the Johnny Depp movie "Sweeney Todd" posters in the concert halls? Kinda cool that they can do that. I guess they can make even more money by inserting new advertising in the game whenever they want.

And is it the same for others...I 5 star songs I love on the first try and songs I don't really care for take me several tries. So I have to play the songs I love in quick play now and labor over the songs I don't like in the career.

Yeah you have to get him to "fail" the song before the end.

I'm one of the few that enjoys the boss battles(my inner Mario Kart coming out) and I've tried the one at a time thing numerous times and it just doesn't do much. For me it always takes at least two at a time to seriously fuck 'em up.

I just beat Morello on hard on my first try. I deployed all three within 2-3 seconds of each other and it caused him to miss nearly everything. While he's doing this I picked up a fourth and deployed it. Knocked him out quick.
