The developers of the game decide what the Achievements will be and how many points each will be worth. So in Bioshock, for example, the developers decided that doing a successful hack for the first time would be an Achievement, and that it would be worth 5 points, and that completing the welcome level would be another achievement, and that one would be worth 10 points.

The points mean absolutely nothing in the game, nor do the Achievements -- except to the extent they give you a way to track your progress.

True, but I'll tell you what...for some of us... achievements + Mild to moderate cases of OCD = finishing and/or replaying more games than ever before.

It's like getting a cookie for doing a back flip.

Wow I actually thought you could use them to buy games.

I beat the game last night. I was up till about 6 am. When I got to bed and my wife woke up a bit she asked me what time it was. I lied and shaved about 4 hours off the time so she wouldn't raise hell. :)

While I enjoyed the game I did have a small glitch that I wondered if anyone else had or heard of.
Spoiler:
On the very first level of the game I found 4 little sisters but the tally when you paused claimed at first there were to be only 3. Later my total said that 4 out of 3 had been found. Then I get to the last level and when I rescued the next to the last little sister I got the achievement for dealing with them all. I still went ahead and rescued the very last one. It's no big deal but it did cause me to wander around each level a bit longer thinking maybe each level had a "hidden" little sister.

I noticed something after I finished the game

Spoiler:
Sometimes when you change areas, you get to pick where to go. I noticed towards the end of the game, there was one slot left that wasn't filled. Did I skip an area altogether? Is there a picture of all of them filled in so at least I can see what was there?

nickdawgy 08-26-07 03:05 PM

Oh and I am on my second run through, on medium this time, and I have died several times but mostly due to Big Daddy's

They sure were easier the first time through.

The missing slot is the location you are currently at.

Are the tonics stackable? Like If I have sport boost and sport boost 2 equiped, do I get a benefit from both? Or am i just wasting a slot? Thanks

Yes they are stackable. If you have Photographers Eye (10% research increase) and Photographers Eye 2 (15% research increase), if you have both of them equipped you will have a 35% research increase! :)

Although I said that I wouldn't replay this for a while, since The Bigs is not available for rent and Stranglehold is delayed again, I started to replay it on the hardest level. Not far in, but the splicers are definitely a bit harder.

I really want to get all of the achievements, but there are a couple that I can see being particularly difficult, listed below. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get these, or if I am methodical enough, should I get all of these in the course of the game? I don't really care so much about the hacks, since I find them to be a big pain in the ass, but as long as I hit all of those uinventit machines, will I get those achievements as long as I pick up all of the various items?

Skilled Hacker - Successfully complete 50 hacks.

Avid Inventor - Successfully invent at least 100 items.

Ammo Inventor - Successfully invented all possible ammo types.

Tonic Collector - Collect or Invent 53 Tonics in the Physical, Engineering and Combat tracks.

I can see getting all of those tonics being difficult as well.

Any suggestions?

For skilled hacker, it's simple enough, just hack everything you see... All cameras, turrets, vending machines, etc.

Avid Inventor and Ammo Inventor - Instead of buying your ammo, invent some of it, and invent lots of Auto Hack Tools, you can carry up to 5 at a time.

Tonic Collector - This one is somewhat tough to get... 1. You must save all Little Sisters (every 3 you save you'll get a new tonic at the next Gatherer's Garden) 2. There are a handful you can only get from researching... Don't forget to take photos of every enemy. 3. Some tonics you can only get from inventing (I think there were 2 or 3 you could only get from inventing.) So invest in those. 4. Buy the tonics before the plasmids when you are at a Gatherer's Garden. In fact, if you MUST buy plasmids, but the ones you personally use the most, and spend the rest of the Adam on Tonics. And then slots. 5. Explore every inch of the game. Some tonics are off the beaten path.

Good luck! You'll get those 1000g soon enough! :)

Rob V 08-26-07 06:24 PM

Can someone tell me how the heck to get more "slots" for the plasmids?? I had to forego my Electrocute plasmid for the Telekenesis plasmid because I didn't have enough slots. WTF?? Can I ever get my Electrocute plasmid back?

Michael Corvin 08-26-07 06:42 PM

Couple of things Rob.

1. Gatherer's Garden - collect your Adam from the little sisters and you can buy more plasmid spots out of these specific machines. The first machine is at the end of the first area after you take out the last Big Daddy.

2. Gene Banks - they allow you to swap out your plasmids and various powers. So in your case, you can find one and swap Telekinesis out for Electro at no charge.

As for the Achievement question above, other than the tonics, the others will be easy enough just playing through the course of the game. I'm only in the third or fourth area and have already gotten the Hacker and Ammo Ineventor ones. You don't have to hack anything but I imagine you will still hack some turrets, cameras and bots because they help you out. Hacking 50 things is nothing. You can probably get it just by hacking the health stations.

You can buy additional slots at the 'garden' vending machine thingy.

I'm still at a very early point in the game (just killed my first big daddy earlier today), but I'm already dreading this being over. This is a damn good game.

K&AJones 08-26-07 06:50 PM

You have to buy a slot with "Adam" at one of the Gatherer Gardens and I think it's "100". I think Telekenesis is the coolest one by far. It's cool of all the stuff you can throw.

Kenny J - Buzz Starhopper

Canis Firebrand 08-26-07 07:22 PM

The telekinesis is also useful for getting items that are in hard to reach spaces. I also use it to fire back things like grenades, etc back at the enemy or turret.

 That's what's so great about this game. So many different ways to play. I rarely if ever use Telekinesis.

Michael Ballack 08-26-07 07:44 PM

Pulled an all nighter last night and finished the game on the dark side path, now I'm looking forward to being the good guy. :D

slop101 08-26-07 07:59 PM

No one's really mentioned it, but the Ayn Rand objectivist stuff is hilarious.

"A man creates. A parasite asks: 'Where's my share?'."

I, however, use telekinesis ALL the time. Once, I even killed a guy with his own fucking HAT. That's right - I just grabbed at something, telekinetically, and I happened to grab this splicer's hat - and just like Oddjob from Goldfinger, I tossed it back in his face, killing him!

Michael Corvin 08-26-07 08:07 PM

 Nice. I may have to check into it some more.

"No!" Says Washington. It belongs to the poor. "No!" Says Moscow. It belongs to the state. "No!" Says the Vatican. It belongs to God.

Awesome stuff.

Me too. I would say in terms of plasmids, I use 80% electric, 15% fire, and 5% everything else. "Zap 'em and whack 'em" is still my favorite technique.

On the other hand, I found movieking's post about needing to get 50 hacks incomprehensible. I hack everything. I think I had 50 hacks before I left the Medical Pavillion.

Michael Ballack 08-26-07 08:39 PM

First time through I used mostly telekinisis, using dead bodies and exploding barrels to kill splicers. When I play as I good guy, I think I'm going to use mostly hacked turrets and guns, taking the approach that the plasmids are bad.

Pretty sure that part actually says, "It belongs to everyone."

The Bus 08-26-07 09:48 PM

I got this today and went through the Medical Pavilion level. Not as creepy as Condemned, which was the last single-player FPS I really liked.

I'm playing on Medium but I had no problem with the Big Daddy at all. I assume they get harder to beat later on.

So far I'm enjoying the Life Aquatic with Ayn Rand stuff.

I'm not blown away by this game. I'll probably sell it as soon as I beat it.
