Re: Resident Evil 5
Okay, having played it quite a bit this weekend (I'm almost at the end) I have to say the full game is much better than the demo, which I greatly disliked. It took me a bit of playtime to really get a hang of the changes and the 360 controls - there was a definite learning curve for me there - something I wasn't able to do in the demo because you're thrust right in the thick of things there.
The controls are what they are. I still think a basic 'aim and walk' movement should be in there, even if your character has to stop in his tracks once you actually take a shot. The real-time inventory is occasionally nerve racking and has a few minor issues, but the hotkeys for the weapons are awesome and became second nature once I had it set up to my preferences. The Wii RE4 controls are still better, but I'm liking the controls here better than the Gamecube version, although that's probably more about me hating the layout of the GC controller (while the 360 controller is second nature to me).
I'm still not a huge fan of the early levels, but the setting actually improves and feels more 'Resident Evil' the deeper you get into the game.
Sheva also gets easier to deal with as you progress through the game. In the beginning I wanted to scream at her for emptying precious ammo into enemies we didn't need to kill, but as weapons and ammo became more plentiful she actually started to feel more like an ally and not a burden.

Just finished the game last night, clocking in at 9 1/2 hours. Perfect length in my opinion.

Can someone describe "survival horror" type games to me? What do you mean by this? Why isn't RE5 "survival horror"? Isn't it a "horror" themed game where you are trying to survive?

Re: Resident Evil 5
Survival horror games had limited enemies that were usually hidden and jumped out at you. RE starting at 4 changed this up to enemies that you could always see and would come in waves. By doing so they changed the whole feeling of the series.

Well I beat it for the 2nd, or maybe 3rd time tonight. I still don't like it and prefer the Silent Hill series. This game is 100% linear, offers no "survival" or "horror", and suffers from 0 originality and bad controls. I managed a run of 2 hours and 45 minutes on veteran by myself, so it's also easy and short. Worth a rental at least, and some easy achievement points

Re: Resident Evil 5
A lot of RE players prefer the old style while others prefer the new style. It's really not worth arguing which is better. I don't know why Capcom doesn't just decide to make both since they have been making Gamecube/Wii exclusive titles anyway. They certainly have had success selling both.
While I did enjoy RE 4 I have to admit the game got pretty repetative once you started to get near the end. I found the Village segment, during the first few minutes of the game, to be the only real challenge in the entire game. The Chainsaw guy was pretty cool though! Not much to think about during the actual game though.
The Gamecube remake is a masterpiece of gaming IMO, as well as many other fans. If anyone hasn't played this I suggest picking it up when the Wii rerelease comes out.

I won't compare SH and RE, but I will say that I feel Konami doesn't market the SH franchise as much as they should. They should have at least released the first three games over last year like they did for MGS 4.
The odd thing is that the remake of Silent Hill is finally being worked on, and it sounds like it's going to be for both the Wii / PSP! I wish they'd put out a HD version on the 360 or PS3.

Re: Resident Evil 5
I second this. The Cube remake of the original game is by far the best game in the RE series. RE2 is a close second, and it really puzzles me why Capcom never remade it in the same fashion. RE2 remade like the RE1 remake would have been perfection.

Resident Evil (Remake on GC) > Resident Evil 2 > Resident Evil 4 > Resident Evil: Code Veronica > Resident Evil 3: Nemesis > Resident Evil 5 > Resident Evil Zero .....just IMO.

Re: Resident Evil 5
No, the remake of the original game is just called Resident Evil. RE0, as the name implies, is a prequel to the entire storyline. It follows Bravo team (and more specifically Rebecca Chambers) as they enter the mansion and get slaughtered. Alpha Team is then sent in in RE1 to find out what happened.
RE0 does use the same graphic engine as the RE1 remake, so that may be where you got confused.

I agree with this for the most part. I would move RE3 up to between RE2 and RE4 however. I would also move RE0 up to between RE3 and RE4.
The Nemesis in RE3 was just completely badass. RE3 was also a fitting end to the "PS1 trilogy."
RE0 is underrated in my opinion. Sure the whole getting rid of the universal storage box was a pain, but it wasn't that bad. RE0 did flesh out some of the story and connected the dots.
RE4 on the other hand had almost nothing at all to do with the Resident Evil mythos other than using some characters like Leon and Ada. RE4 was an entertaining game to play, but it was a horrible Resident Evil game... if that makes any sense.

Re: Resident Evil 5
I finally had time to finish this last night. Comparing to RE4 (and setting aside control related discussions), I think RE5 is paced better than RE4 was in terms of building to a climax. RE4 definitely starts off better and creepier, but kind of falls off later in the game. RE5, on the other hand, starts off so-so but builds up in the back end.
I think I'm going to have to play through this a dozen times just to unlock everything and get all the achievements, but I don't have a problem with replaying games.

Re: Resident Evil 5
But RE4 was much longer - a good 50% bigger than RE5. And with the upcoming multiplayer DLC costing extra money, RE5 doesn't really have anything to increase it's play-time in comparison to RE4.

Yeah, even the developers said that the length of RE4 took away from the immersion of the game. I really liked the length of RE5, one of its strongpoints IMO.

I love this game. I can't wait to play through it a few more times on the harder difficulties, not to mention maxing out the weapons and unlocking characters to play with in Mercenaries, which is probably my favorite thing about the game.

Re: Resident Evil 5
This is much more fun than I expected, especially the depth of the upgrade system and unlockables. I'm only to 5-3 so far, but I have enjoyed playing all the levels multiple times, with different weapons and strategies. Especially the grenade launcher and rock launcher, which can be a lot of fun to break out at odd times in the levels. I can't wait to kill a Majini with a rotten egg!

Re: Resident Evil 5
I just started playing. Only on 1-3 right now but it's pretty good.
Game looks and sounds GREAT btw.
Only complaint so far is I wish the characters were a tad smaller. It's hard to see whats going on when you have numerous enemies in front and back.

Me and a friend beat it last night, online co-op all the way. A great game from start to finish, and getting it for $40 helped. The only thing that annoyed me was the last boss fight.
