Hard to say, but there have been some reports here of failed/RROD Elites. I don't know if it is known (outside of MS) exactly how many Elites have sold, so determining a percentage failed versus Premiums would be nearly impossible.

No 2 of the 3 people I spoke to have been extremely rude. One guy hung up on me after I kept asking him if there was anyway to reduce the price of the repair (also asking if a supervisor was available who maybe could give me a better option). The second guy I talked to just recently just started talking louder (almost yelling) when I said that I thought it was strange that they're not covering other related repairs for 3 years. When I asked if there was a supervisor around he claimed he was the head of the entire call center  and I just said "obviously trying to argue with you is a waste of both of our time then" and just hung up.
One guy was helpful and he was the one who knocked it down to $100 with free shipping both ways and said I could call back anytime with my reference number and get the same price. even though he didn't budge on doing it free, he was at least polite, listened, and sounded like he actually gave a damn.

I dropped mine off at UPS yesterday. The counter lady asked what it was because they get tons of them. I told it was a piece of crap X-Box 360. She says they literally get a dozen of them a day. There where 5 or so boxes sitting there that had recently been dropped off.

I can't believe I spent any money on this thing.

Th0r S1mpson 08-18-07 09:22 AM

Can someone fill me in on the actual warranty situation?

Do I need to get the extended warranty on my system or do I get 3 years out of the box now?

The warranty package that came with the system says 1 year Express Warranty on Console, 90 days on accessories.

I see the RROD extension here:
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/sy...antyupdate.htm

So doesn't look like I need documentation for that.

Are there a lot of other problems out there that would justify the extended warranty or has that become less essential now?

Michael Corvin 08-18-07 10:02 AM

1 year manufacturer's warranty covers everything
3 years manufacturer's warranty covers RROD

2 year extended ($50) warranty covers everything and stacks with the 1 year for a total of 3 years of complete coverage.

There are other problems like disc scratching, video issues, and dirty disc errors. Whether you think that is worth an additional $50 is up to you. I like the piece of mind.

Th0r S1mpson 08-18-07 10:49 AM

I hate extended warranties, but I know it was essential on this given the RROD frequency so I was planning on getting it. Now that it is covered 3 years for that, I am on the fence. I guess I should probably get it any way. :(

I feel kind of the same way. I guess mine is on the way back since when I checked my repair status online, it said "no pending repair" and it listed a different serial number for my xbox. That means they're sending me a refurb I suppose, which I'm not too happy about. I would have been just as well off buying a used one in the first place since I'm getting someone else's back. It makes me wonder - if I get a non-RROD malfunction, should I still have to pay for the repair since it's not even the XBox I originally bought and used for 10 months?

Th0r S1mpson 08-18-07 11:17 AM

I just filled out the extended warranty cards. Why not.

How does the warranty cover disk scratching? Do they replace the game, or what? Replacing one new game in itself would make the ext. warranty worth it.

Nope. If it is scratching games they will fix it for free (the system) but you are, for the most part, SOL on the disc. If the disc is on the list they have (maybe all first-party games?) they will replace it for 20$. If you don't have the warranty and it is scratching discs then you have to pay for the console repair.

paulringodaman 08-18-07 02:43 PM

they never replace a game due to being scratched.

Ack! My launch-day 360 finally received the 3RROD! I was really bummed out. But I went to the Xbox site and was able to submit a warranty claim online, and it's covered, so I really can't complain. I appreciate being able to submit the claim online rather than going through a phone maze and being put on hold for 1/2 an hour.

Now the adventure begins. ;)

Consider yourself lucky. I was unable to submit my claim online, it kept giving an error and a message to call the 800 number. While calling can take some time and be very frustrating I can't complain I got my box 3 days after I called. It is scheduled to arrive at the repair center 8/22/07, I hope it is a quick turn around after they recieve it.

redcat 08-22-07 12:55 PM

I just got my 360 back from repair, although I haven't had a chance to set it up yet. For what it's worth, that means it took 20 days from the time I called in the repair to the day I got it back. I think they sent a refurb though.

Nice. Friday will be 20 days for me. Did you get an email with a shipping notice and tracking number, or did the refurb just show up?

They had my name spelled incorrectly on my e-mail, so they probably sent them but they of course never showed up. And I guess I got a brand new unit as opposed to a refurb since the manufacture date says August 9, 2007. Maybe I can actually have some confidence in this one.

pinata242 08-22-07 01:21 PM

Does it have the HDMI port?

I just checked - it doesn't have one. Does that mean it's a refurb then?

pinata242 08-22-07 02:03 PM

I don't know. It's weird that it has a later manufacture date than mine (7/3/2007) but doesn't have HDMI.

One of the podcasters mentioned that it depends on which warehouse/manufacturing plant it came from.

I got to thinking - maybe it's just a new core model (since those still don't have HDMI).

I'll get one when the design has been definitely fixed.

My Pong, and Atari 2600 still work.

Well, it might have been fixed with the new heatsink and whatever modifications they've done recently to that X-clamp thing. We probably won't know for a few months and more recent buyers/recent returns start mentioning they're good. Problem with this hardware issue is that it's hard to say "it's completely fixed" until at least 6 months - one year down the line.

Meanwhile, my new or refurbed system shipped out on the 21st back to me. Don't care if i get HDMI that much or not, but i hope it's a new system like others.
