I got no updates at all. But usually, yes, you'll get e-mail notifications when they receive the unit, ship a refurb back, et cetera.

cool, i've been meaning to call them up but have been really busy lately so I was curious.

Called today and mentioned how mine was randomly locking up and experienceing other problems and that I saw the warranty was extended to 3 years and the guy told me that was only for RROD errors. I said I didn't think that was the case and if it was that's a load of crap and he started to get very indignant so I asked to speak to a supervisor and he tried to say he was the supervisor. I just said "arguing with you obviously isn't worth my time" and hung up on the SOB.

That's twice now I've called and gotten nothing bute rude idiots on the other end of the phone when I try to be civil but firm. I've got a carboard box ready if that's what it takes for them to fix it free so be it.

It is indeed only for the RROD errors.

Well mine crapped out on me. Had it for a little more then a year and probably have 3 hours of playing time on it. Hadn't fired it up in months but picked up Nascar 08. Turned it on and got and E71 error, turned it off and it cleared. Played for 10 or so minutes and paused and left the box on for about 5 hours. Tried to play again and it wouldn't work.

Long story short it has e71 and e79 errors. Won't read a brand new disc but will for some reason read an older one. Got far enough to update but it crapped out in the middle of the update and now I can't do a thing with it. Have to pay $100 to fix a machine that I've barely used. Needless to say I won't be getting the next X-box.

Unfortunately for you, they are right this time. :(

yeah, i did some searching afterwards and found out about that. While I can totally understand their point of view, having had to deal with customers before, I still think they've done a piss poor job of it. Of the 3+ times I've called I got one semi decent person and the best he could do was $100 and free shipping both ways. I guess in my view, RROD or not, a f'ed up console is still and f'ed up console, especially since my first console died of RROD.
In the long run, I realize $100 isn't alot of cash to pay for a game sytem to be fixed, it's just that right now as a recent first time home owner I don't have the spare money to blow on something so non essential. It's kind of killing my interest in gaming. Oh well, when I've got the cash I'll get it fixed, unless I am "blessed" with another RROD error before then :)

Ironic fact-There is still an Atari 2600 at my parent's house in working condition but my not even 2 year old 360 is giving me issues. Guess it's true that they don't make them like they used to.

I think it's a hell of a lot to pay when the failure rate is so bad. It's so bad that once mine gets fixed I can "extend" my repair warranty by another year for $26. They're basically telling me that it's going to die again and we just want to collect a little bit of money up front.

I'd agree, 100 bucks to repair shoddy original workmanship or defective parts a year or two after buying the unit is "too much". That's what, 25% of the original cost? If it cost me 5k-7k to repair my car or replace parts the manufacturer knew were defective but just happened to last 1.5 years after buying it, yeah I'd be pissed.
I've never had a console break; Atari 2600/7800, Genesis/CD/32x, PS1, PS2. My Wii did have the heat artifacts, but Nintendo replaced it free and extended the warranty on the new one, and even at that it was playable.

Yeah when you look at it as a percentage it is definitely alot and I'm not happy about it especially now that I can't justify blowing $100 on something that I can easily do without when I've got so much stuff I need to do to the house but fighting with them obviously didn't work in getting them to fix it for free. It sucks but it's not like I really have a choice.
Like I said maybe I'll move it up to my living room from the basement and turn the AC of on like a 90 degree day and play it all day and pray for RROD (assuming it doesn't freeze up every 5 seconds!)

Oh other fun fact-My poorly modded original XBox still worked even though the guy I had put the chip in screwed it up the first time and then had to redo the soldering. If that thing worked with probably a poor solder job, then that tells you just how bad the 360 is.

My cousin's 360 is constantly having 2 red lights, which turns out to be an overheating issue. He keeps it in open space and the vents aren't blocked. He says it flashes within 10 minutes of him turning on his 360, and it shuts off on its own. He called 18004MYXBOX to have it repaired, but obviously was told that the newly extended warranty only covers the 3 red lights.

So my question is, any ideas on how to fix this issue? At first I told him to just keep it running and hope the 3 red lights show up so that MS would repair it, but its useless since it shuts off on its own.

My friend who had this problem said he wrote video game reviews (which he does) and he got his system replaced. Grain of salt, YMMV, etc.

Put it vertical inside a box (box closed) and play it. That should cause the RROD, assuming you can play it long enough without the freezing.

It seems putting it vertical will really help cause the RROD faster. At least based on anecdotal reports.

I've heard people mention that but my fear is that if the 360 gets hot enough to melt solder inside, couldn't it get hot enough to perhaps set the box on fire? Not sure risking a fire is worth saving $100 but perhaps the outside temp doesn't get anywhere near warm enough for that to occur.
My 360 is normally vertical and I think my one that died was always horizontal, maybe I should mix it up a bit :)

the vertical probably does, as the solder would tend to flow down the circuit board, as opposed to liquify in approximately the same place the joint is to be made

I can totally understand feeling jipped sine your 360 is having issues and they won't fix it for free, but were they really being jerks to you or are you just calling them rude idiots because you're not getting what you want?

I recently sold my 360 even though it was working fine. Wasn't playing it much but might get one in the future. Now I'm glad I did sell it.

I assume the design flaw they found does not exist in the recently released Elite edition, correct?

Apparently, the elites are not guaranteed to be fixed. Instead of a widespread recall, they seem to be trying to sell out of the old stock.

So do we think all Premiums with HDMI at least have the RROD fix?

That's what I was asking. Isn't the new black one with HDMI called the Elite?

The Elite came out before any of the "fixes" or updates/upgrades.

Ah gotcha. Well here's hoping there will be a specific way of knowing whether you're buying a "fixed" version in the future. For now I'm holding off.

They might have the heatsink fix (x-clamp), but they still have the 90 nm CPUs. The new premiums have the same motherboards as the Elites.

No 360 SKU currently has the smaller, cooler 65nm CPUs (at least that has been reported).

Have any Elites been reported to fall victim to the RROD?
