I just played some death-matches - and while it was very fun (far better than Halo3, IMO), I was very frustrated as it seemed like everyone I played against have all been playing for months, even though the game doesn't even "officially" come out tomorrow. Everyone had much, much higher ranks than me and they all had all the crazy perks that were still locked for me. I can't believe the amount of people that either a) got this game really early, or b) have been playing it so much in such a short amount of time to rank up so quickly. Either way, I played for about an hour, and came in dead-last in every single fucking match. I'm not the best FPS player, but I'm not that bad. So what's going on? I really seemed like I couldn't even see a single player until they were on top of me, and everyone could see me as if I was wearing bight neon colors.
Anyways, I'm not gonna touch the multiplayer again for a while, or until there's a match-making that puts evenly matched players against each other.

I'm hoping to pick up the PS3 version tomorrow... switching over to graveyard for a couple of weeks at my job and I'll need something to do on my nights off!

Once I reached Level 4 and was able to pick up other weapons, the game became much easier. Needless to say I had a lot of fun yesterday, and I'm hoping I can play with the group of COD2 regulars tonight.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is a fantastic game. The single-player experience is easily Infinity Ward's best work to date. Calling it intense may be an understatement. The overall story is standard action movie fare, but the relationships built over the short five hours of play are surprisingly strong. Though the single-player lacks length, the multiplayer should keep you invested in COD4 for the long winter. This is a truly fantastic multiplayer offering that's as deep as any other online game available.
Infinity Ward has done it again. Call of Duty 4 is a winner.

If this is war, consider me a future draft-dodger.
10 Graphics
From top to bottom, one of the best-looking console games around.
9.5 Sound
The explosions will shake you; the constant sounds of gunfire will put you on edge. The end song is an added bonus and properly immortalizes the unfortunate phrase, "Go deep and hard."
9.5 Gameplay
An excellent shooter that is as intense an experience as you can find in gaming. The multiplayer is also top-notch.
9.0 Lasting Appeal
The single-player experience is brief, but there are many other things that will hold your attention once the campaign is complete.
9.4 Overall
Outstanding

I gotta believe those people who are at level 14 or 17 already got the game super early or they have been playing the beta and the stats carried over with their Live gamertag. Can't WAIT to get this at lunch today - I haven't been this fired up for a game since, well, forever.

The beta ranks were not carried over to the retail game. Some people got the game early, that's how they had higher ranks (I played multiplayer for less than 2 hour and I ended up at Level 7).

The folks on cheapassgamer noticed that it's coming up incorrectly all over the nation at Circuit City. Basically, CoD4 rings up for $29.99 and CoD3 Gold rings up for free. People are scoring both for $30 plus tax. Off to check it out myself.
UPDATE: Scored CoD4 for a bit under $32. I didn't get in on the deal above because they were out of CoD3, but they did discount my game due to the absense.

Well, my main problem was that I couldn't get a win for the life of me, and that every other player seems to me exponentially better than me - I'm talking even harder than the "veteran" difficulty in the single-player. It's just too lop-sided for me - even though I like the gameplay in CoD4's multiplayer better than Halo3's, at least Halo mostly put you up against people around your own skill level.

I found the quickest way to level up was in Free For All. Fewer points per kill, but you could shoot anything that moved.
