Re: FFXIII no longer a PS3 exclusive?
I stand corrected. I must admit FFX was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the gameplay footage in the trailer. So it must "colored" my memory of the same.
But, um, it's still no Uncharted 2. Yeah, I got nothing...

I prefer linear RPGs like Final Fantasy over the more "sandbox" ones like Elder Scrolls.
I also enjoy the stories and characters for the most part, even if the characters are cliche with angst. I'm sure critically it will do fine, I will be interested to see if some reviews that slam it for linearity reasons are the same ones that praised Uncharted 2 in all its uber linear glory.

Two different types of games. Had Uncharted 2 been an RPG, it would have been rightfully slammed for linearity and short game length (I beat it on normal in 13 hours during my first playthrough). Given it's an action game that emulates serial inspired action-adventure movies, its linearity and brisk playtime are positives.

It seems even the positive reviews of this game read like negative reviews. It seems this might be a real stinker.

I made it about 15% of the way through that review before I gave up. Unless they took it back in the other 85% of the review, they made it sound like FF VII with a completely different combat system. FF VII was the last FF I played -- it's been 13 years or so, but I enjoyed it, and the combat system they describe seems interesting enough. I'll probably give this a try at some point.

I saw that as well, but, I also read that Famitsu is somewhat lenient with their scoring system, recently giving Dragon Quest IX, Bayonetta, and Monster Hunter Tri perfect scores (40/40). If you read the review from Famitsu, while rewarding the game with a 39/40 they still managed to bring up a fair amount of criticism. If these critiques are indeed true, I would personally not award a near perfect score, but I understand looking at the strengths rather than weaknesses.

Here's an extremely lengthy, and not all that positive review of XIII. Essentially, the reviewer liked it, but doesn't think it matches up with previous titles in the FF library. You can scroll down (skip the introduction), and read the part about FF 13 only, if you're just curious on his take on FF 13

Here's an uneven review of the game's first 17 hours from Wired

Here's another website addressing the game's faults, though I take this one with a grain of salt

Seems par for course for Final Fantasy. Even the insanely popular FF7 had its harsh critics before the US release. And then it just got harsher for every game that followed.

Really? I always thought all but XI and XII were universally praised.
The deleted/unfinished levels, maybe?

Anyhoo, saying it's too hard to render cities in HD is a terrible excuse. You should get another job if you're not up to the task of what other programmers and developers have accomplished on other titles.

Yeah, I'd say it's no longer a PS3 exclusive.
Here's a look at the upcoming Limited edition FF XIII 360. While it would be nice to have a 250 GB drive, it certainly isn't all that exciting as a package. How disappointing for collectors after that amazingly awesome Japanese PS3 limited edition.

Re: FFXIII no longer a PS3 exclusive?
i'm on the fence with this one. i haven't played a FF game since FFVIII, but I've enjoyed them in the past. what i've seen of the battle system makes me think twice. this sounds weird, but the battle sequences almost look too fast. also the whole issue about there being no cities to explore or talk to people seems awfully weird for an RPG.

Rendering cities was just "too hard"? Aren't they paid to figure that out? I hope I'm wrong but it doesn't make me too excited about this game.

Game Informer gave it a pretty good review. I'll buy it and play it just because I have played every FF game there is. If it sucks, I'll get rid of it after I finish it.

Maybe they can't do it cos of all the towns and cities.

Re: FFXIII no longer a PS3 exclusive?
Since we're on Joystiq articles, I thought I'd include this link. It really looks like the PS3 is the preferred version of this game. Offhand, I can't think of another game that (apparently) looks noticeably better on the PS3 compared to the 360 version. Glad it was the PS3 version I preordered with the Gold Box discount last year.
