Wii thread - part V

That's so weird. I had never before hooked a console onto the Internet, and I was shocked at how easy it was to do so with the Wii. I anticipated having these kinds of problems, but was taken aback at how quickly I was able to get connected.

* Temporarily disabling WEP encryption on the router.
* Set up another internet connection profile on the Wii (w/o encryption key)
* Select the User Agreement on the Wii.
* Re-set the WEP encryption key on the router.
* Switch back to the internet connection profile on the Wii (w/encryption).

My WEP was already disabled. Thanks though.

You can take a guest online with you which is cool.

I never played the 'cube one, but this one looks really promising. It may even change people's views about Nintendo's online. Yeah, there are friend codes, but you can played matched games against strangers.

Do you, by chance, have a router given to you by your ISP? Is it one of these:
Linksys
WCG200 ver. 2
WCG200-CC
WCG200-CC ver. 2
If not, you might try disabling the router's firewall if it is active or placing the Wii in the DMZ.

I agree with your excitement for the game. It looks to be a blast and I hope it gets here soon!

That video and screenshot seems to confirm that you will have separate friend codes for every game you play, rather than using the universal friend code already keyed into your Wii.

The games themselves have unique friends lists I guess because you can't trust a person you added to your Wii list to not be a stalker on your game. I guess it's neat that you can customize your friend list per game if you don't want someone coming to your Animal Crossing town...? But why not just let us enable and disable people from our list in our game.
I wish it were like XBL where I could see my entire friend list and what they were playing whether I have that game or not. I won't even be able to see in Strikers that one of my friends is playing Battalion Wars II rather than simply offline.

Can you see if your friends are online with the DS?

Here's something extremely significant that was pointed out on another website: Battle Lode Runner is the first Virtual Console release of a game that was not originally released in the US! I've check the PC-Engine Catalog and it's true, it was only released in Japan previously!

That's pretty cool, though. Look forward to seeing more of those.

Telltale Games is working on stuff for the Wii. Telltale is the maker of the current Sam and Max games.

We know that you have some Wii content in the works. Obviously the pointer can be used as a mouse, but do you have any cool ideas for using motion-based controls in your Wii titles?
Dave: I had this great idea where you strap the controllers to your legs and walk around. Which we’re not doing, unfortunately, but we are doing more than just using the pointer like a mouse. That would be a waste of an opportunity. Designing for the Wii is pretty interesting, by the way – it forces you to think in a different way than you’re used to.
Will your upcoming Wii content be available through the Virtual Console, or are you seeking a publisher for a retail release?
Dan: This hasn’t been decided yet. We’d be open to either.

I find it hard to believe that there will be shortages of the Wii for the next 2 years. Sure demand is high, but I'm pretty sure by this holiday season, Nintendo will be able to make as many Wii's as they want.
Hell, it's probably the easiest to make of the Big 3.

Wii shortages could damage consumer interest – Pidgeon
Matt Martin 12:46 (BST) 25/04/2007
Analyst expects console shortages into 2009
The continued shortages of the Nintendo Wii could mean that potential consumers will lose interest in a product they cannot easily buy, according to IDC's Billy Pidgeon.
The analyst also believes that Nintendo will continue to struggle to meet demand for the console until 2009.
"I'd like to see Wii hardware shipping in larger quantities or mass market consumers may cool on it. Having said that, I don't believe supply will meet demand for the Wii until 2009," Pidgeon told Home Media Magazine.
The analyst also believes that rival next-generation consoles from Sony and Microsoft are lacking strong software support, which could lead to a loss of market share during the second quarter of 2007.
"Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 need better system selling games as soon as possible," said Pidgeon.
"Halo 3 will help, as will Lair and Heavenly Sword, but that leaves a hole in Q2 which will be filled by Wii, DS and PSP hardware and software."

2009? Pidgeon is out of his mind.
That said, the demand for this console is unbelievable. I don't think we've ever seen anything like it. I got mine on Sunday and I had to wait in line before the store opened for a voucher to get one. This five months after launch! At least one person at my store was turned away. I'm still laughing at those who predicted you'd be able to walk into any store on launch day and pick one up off the shelves.
But it's getting better. Every time there's a shipment, more and more people get them in hand. The ebay prices are going down as supply meets demand.
