"There will be an event at the SonyStyle Plaza, NYC, starting at 9:30 P.M. November 16. The first 400 people who line up will get a wristband, allowing them into an exclusive launch party. There'll be food and drinks, Ludacris will host, D-Nice will perform and comedian Charlie Murphy will make an appearance. At midnight, we'll throw open the doors to the SonyStyle Store and let the PLAYSTATION 3 purchasing begin--for those who have wristbands.
THE BEST NEWS: We've set aside 50 wristbands for die-hard G.A.P. members like you. To reserve yours, reply to this email IMMEDIATELY and save yourself days of waiting in line. We will respond soon after with a confirmation email with more details."
At this point I'm more worried about getting mugged than not getting a PS3.

That might not mean anything. My 3 year old Toshiba rear projection is 1080i, but it will accept a 720p signal. It just upscales it. Check the manual on your tv and see if it will upscale a 720p signal.

From: You might catch me in Atlanta, looking like a boss
So I was talking to a manager at Best Buy last night. They already have more campers than systems despite him informing the line of # of units they have. He was saying he spent some time talking with the people in line and "all but a handful" said they were eBaying their unit, which is also what people are reporting in various forums. So it got me thinking. I know its been asked before and dismissed, but is it really completely out of the realm of possibility that the eBay flood will kill the secondary market value on the PS3? It seems the "going to eBay" interest is far greater than the "I want one" interest (although I understand that many are Ebaying extra PS3's to pay for their first one). I know I have no real research numbers and I'm basing it all on small samples of anecdotal evidence, but let's say the US gets 200,000 launch units and only 20% of those hit eBay (which I think is low, but let's just say 20%). Are there really 40,000 people ready, willing, and able to spend $1500+ on one between now and XMas? Really? I know people point at the 360 and mention how it stayed hot on eBay past XMas, but I don't ever remember a time where there were like 30+ pages of 360 auctions on eBay at once. My (obviously uneducated) guess is that there are gonna be auctions in early/mid December where people will be happy just to make a couple hundred bucks profit (total sale around $800-$900) just to pay off the thing. But of course, what do I know, the average eBay sale could be $2200 throughout December and it wouldn't surprise me.

I think the amount of units that will be posted to ebay will cause the prices to deflate pretty quickly. I'm sure the initial ones will go for pretty good as there will be yay-hoo's with too much money and no patience. They'll probably still sell for a few hundred over but I don't think all of them will go for a couple grand apiece.

I think it would be funny if they only sold for a hundred or so over retail since they were all going on about how much they are going to make per hour.
"dude, I waited in line for 24hrs. and my time is worth atleast 100.00/hr so I'm getting paid"
yep. it would be very funny.

I believe the percentage rate of launch Xbox 360's that went up on Ebay was around 10%. I'd imagine the number will be higher for the PS3 (perhaps 15% to 20%) and the prices will be driven down considerably. I have a feeling folks will be sorely dissapointed in the amount of money they will be receiving over Ebay.
The only thing that will really drive the price up is if Sony cannot deliver on their promise of weekly shipments.

can anyone confirm this:
I just got of the phone with my local Gamerush who was going to do a raffle tonight and the manager told me that Gamerush has had their shipment canceled for now. I'm trying to figure out of its true or if the employees are just going to keep them for themselves. has anyone called their local store today?

but honestly, if you are Sony and you have terrible news, you wait till after the launch to break it. I was browsing the latest Gameinformer magazine and half the things it said about the PS3 were recanted by sony after the mag had been published. No Oblivion, Backwards Compatability etc...

has anybody read this article ?
It is a pretty good article comparing the power of the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. (CPU & GPU)
One interesting quote:
"1080p is not a smart resolution to target in any form this generation, but if 360 developers wanted to get serious about 1080p, thanks to Xenos, could actually outperform the ps3 in 1080p. (The less efficient GPU always shows its weaknesses against the competition in higher resolutions so the best way for the rsx to be competitive is to stick to 720P) In vertex shader limited situations the 360’s gpu will literally be 6 times faster than RSX."

Crazy people, Why wait in line to get one right away? theres no killer launch except for Resistence. I just watched a video on yahoo, with the president of Sony again saying, the PS3 lifespan will be 10 years, I doubt that, I would say 6 at the most until the next playstation is out or announced.

Sony software upgrades to fix PlayStation glitches
By Franklin Paul
Wed Nov 15, 4:37 PM ET
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Sony Corp. (6758.T) (NYSE:SNE - news) said on Wednesday that online software upgrades to its new video game console, the PlayStation 3, will fix glitches that make some older PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games not run properly on the PS3.
Kaz Hirai, president and chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment America, told Reuters that more than 8,000 PS2 games will play on the PS3, and that so-called "firmware" upgrades will address problems found with about 200 games since sales of the PS3 started last week in Japan.
"We are aiming for perfect compatibility. Our goal is 100 percent compatibility," he said in an interview. "We are trying to get there as quickly as possible."
A Sony spokesman said the glitches in the 200 games in question were related mostly to audio problems and conflicts caused by the fact that the game controllers, held in users hands as they direct the action on the screen, differ from one PlayStation generation to the next. For example, buttons found on a PS One may not cause the same action on a PS3.
U.S. sales of the PS3 start on Friday, kicking off a holiday season battle between the $30 billion video game industry's leading game console makers -- Sony, Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq:MSFT - news) and Nintendo Co. Ltd. (7974.OS). Microsoft's Xbox 360 launched a year ago, and Nintendo's Wii comes out on Saturday.
A limited supply, delayed debut and drop in the number of games built exclusively for the PS3 could hamper Sony's effort to remain market leader during this crucial holiday season.
Hirai confirmed that Sony expects to have 1 million units available in the United States by the end of the year. A Sony spokesman said the company's goal was to have 400,000 units available on Friday, and 6 million shipped worldwide by the end of March.
By contract, Microsoft expects to have shipped 10 million Xbox 360s by December 31, while Nintendo is targeting 4 million units.
Hirai said that supply issues are typical at the launch of new products, and it will take time to see which console will have the biggest effect on the market.
"We are very confident that when you look back over the long haul that PlayStation 3 is going to continue the leadership position that we have established for ourselves over the past 12 years," he said.

after having a pre-ordered canceled with no notification, I tried contacting the district manager 6 times, but have had no responses. My girl then called up the corporate office, and talked to the regional manager. He told us flat out that if they have our money, and we have confirmation (receipt) they CANNOT deny us a system the day of the launch.
Apparently, its been an issue with district managers taking matters into their own hands, which doesn't follow their corporate policy.
I'm hoping that we can get the district manager in trouble as well. The regional manager explained to us that if she was to cancel, she should have notified us personally.

They're not.
Neither will the PS3 be dead when its successor comes out 2010-2012.
The Atari 2600 had a 15-year lifespan as it was supported until 1992. The Neo-Geo AES had support until 2004 (fourteen years). The NES was supported in Japan for twenty years.
Ten years doesn't seem out of the question. Sony is still going to be selling new PS2s next year.

Police are investigating a drive-by shooting involving people waiting in line for a video game.
Dozens of people camped out in front the Best Buy store on Nicholasville Road. They're hoping to get their hands on a Sony PlayStation 3 console. But the wait turned serious when someone drove by and fired shots at people waiting in line.
Four people were hit by the BB pellets, including 27 NEWSFIRST reporter Elizabeth Dorsett. She was interviewing someone in line at the time. None of them were seriously hurt.
Police came to the store to investigate. They're still looking for a suspect.
Lexington Police say they'll stay at the Best Buy to make sure people in line stay safe.
The PlayStation 3 goes on sale Friday morning at eight. The consoles are selling for more than $600 a piece.

Good ol' Lexington.Could be worse, could have been paintballs. I love how serious the news article makes it sound, until the "hit by BB pellets" bit.
