Apparently Wii Sports is not a pack-in (at least in Japan) and is only 5 sports rather than the 30 or so that has been rumored.
Edited to add: 16 games at launch

In fact, an announcement can always be retracted. It would be a clever move to announce a later date in order to make Sony believe they can get away with a later date as well. Then bam, early release.

They've announced the release date for November 19. It's not coming out before then.

I checked 1up.com. They have a story repeating this info, but are still hedging their bets on whether or not it's true. They said the NY Times report is just a re-report of the inital report pizza linked.

still from the Japan release:
So $250 for the system and one controller?
No WiiSports, No second controller, no classic controller, no cheapy SD card thrown in? Wow...talk about clusterfuck. I don't think anyone saw that coming. It's like the PS3 and 360 tard packs without a second better buying option.
16 games at Launch? So 6 are from Ubisoft, one of them is a souped up Gamecube game, what does that leave?
Wiimote is $32 but the nunchuck is another $15?
Why sell them seperately?
Dec. 2nd? Wow... just wow.
So about the only decent news out of all this is Zelda is not delayed and the classic controller is only $15. Yikes. What an event!
Couldn't find the George Michael sad walk so:
Press release lists Wii contents: Console, Wii remote with strap, Nunchuck attachment, AC adaptor, A/V cable, console stand, sensor bar, sensor bar stand, and two AA batteries.

Edit: I'm glad that it appears Nintendo will not be splitting the market with two different packs so they can advertise a lower cost of ownership when in reality its higher. (360/ps3) I was hoping for a $200 price point. not because I'm cheap, but thats the position I felt would be best for nintendo, but I don't know their true costs.

IGN:
My question is, why isn't nintendo working with Apple and their new video service, the Wii would be a perfect vehicle for that. Anyway...
In a surprise announcement, Nintendo said that it wanted to make Wii a living room centerpiece by shipping the system with features outside of the videogame realm. Wii will include a photo channel, enabling users to display their digital photos through the console. It will also boast regularly updated news and weather channels. In addition, the system will ship with the Opera Web browser, enabling users to connect online.
One of the channels available on Wii is called the "Mii Channel." Here, players can customize avatars by selecting from a variety of face shapes, hair styles, color schemes, and so on. The hook is that these avatars can not only be stored on the console itself, they can also be transfered to the Wii remote itself -- presumably so players can easily access their personalized characters and take them with them when playing against friends.

Has a system by a Japanese manufacturer ever launched in the States before being released in Japan? While some of the other info is disappointing, that little tidbit is making me wonder if this is a case where a bunch of members of the press pulled from a website that had some bad information on it.

I really don't understand launching after the PS3. I guess the shortage of PS3s will keep it from really impacting the Wii, but I don't get it. I also don't like the idea of having to pay $50 for Wii sports. I'm really not too excited about what I'm hearing. The freaking controller is $50 as well if you get the needed nunchuck attachment.

12/2 in Japan? That doesn't feel like good news. 11/19 makes no sense at all. I could understand launching simultaneously more than I can understand 2 days later. Hopefully Reggie won't kick us in the balls today.
If Wii Sports is going to be a pack-in in the US, it only makes sense to include 2 sets of controllers. You give us that bundle and I think $250 is a fair entry point.

Wouldn't work, because Apple's new service supports HD which the Wii can't do.

Quit your bellyaching.
We're getting a good system, a controller and something to play for $250.
Just thank your lucky stars that video games and consoles haven't exponentially gone up in price over the years. If that was so, then we'd be paying about the same as the PS3 and getting games for around a $100.
Sheesh.
If you are going to get one, get one.
If not, then wait for the price drop.
Rant over.
