It is graphically, but that isn't what most of us were excited about anyways.

I think the glorified GC bits have came up in illustrating what people outside the target market will think, not what we think.

i.e. I think I used in saying I don't see people getting shut out on finding a PS3 buying a Wii instead for that reason among others, and them being much more likely to get a 360.

It's definitely more than a glorified GC for me, due to the controller, which I do think can revolutionize games.

I'm still very exited about it. Just less exited about paying for it. :D

I suppose playing US or Japanese VC games on European consoles should be possible. Otherwise Nintendo would miss some nice profits.

LorenzoL 09-15-06 11:53 AM

I like how Nintendo has priced the Wii for Canada: $279.95 plus tax.
This is actually cheaper than when they launched the Gamecube for $300.

What cables does the Wii use? I have a 28" W/S (CRT?) set and use the 'Cube RGB cable when playing Cube games (the TV has one RGB socket).
Since it plays normal DVDs as well as games I guess a good quality scart with the Wii would do?

I've been trying to find out myself if the cables will still be interchangeable as they have been since the SNES, but haven't been able to find the info.

BTW, the Wii no longer has DVD playback. That was part of the announcement yesterday.

from cnet.com

When we asked Nintendo about the A/V hookup, they said the system would include an all-in-one composite-component cable much like the one included with the premium Xbox 360. We did not get to see those cables, so take that one with a grain of salt.

Josh H 09-15-06 12:49 PM

Yeah, I saw that, but that just implies that it will be composite and component, with no S-video.

And doesn't clearly state whether it will be able to use the old GC cables, though it is unlikely.

Sucks as I have to use S-video and don't want to be scrambling for a cable on launch when the cheap 3rd party ones don't tend to be around yet (only expensive monster ones etc.).

Michael Corvin 09-15-06 01:23 PM

I imagine that it is a new input to compensate for the 6 wires running through it.

PixyJunket 09-15-06 01:33 PM

Oh, just another bit on the controller's cost.. we seem to forgot that each controller has a bit of memory to it on top of all the other stuff it does. I don't think it's used for game saves, but it's supposed to hold like your personal tag or your little Mii people on it.

Wick 09-15-06 01:35 PM

There's a new Wii video featured on www.gametrailers.com. It shows a lot of great games including the new Strikers, Zelda and...HARVEST MOON! Definitely watch it if you haven't.

PixyJunket 09-15-06 01:42 PM

Strikers! :)

Wick 09-15-06 01:42 PM

It's nice to see someone else loves that game as much as I do.

It is true that there is a lot of tech in the controllers. But I don't give a shit honestly. I only care about my bottom line, and I'm not paying $60 for a controller given how seldom I play multiplayer. I'd rather spend that on a game (or on 3 $20 games).

It also seems to high for what nintendo is going for--bringing in non-gamers for multiplayer goodness.

How many non-gamers are going to drop $250 for the console, and up to $180 for extra controllers? If it was cheaper they'd be much more likely to play at a friends/relatives and then run and buy one on impulse (like you hear of happening with the DS and Brain Age etc.). That will happen much less often at this price point IMO.

Ah, we've had SEVERAL full eight player tournaments.

Speaking of.. we're going to Oktoberfest tonight.. I'll have to suggest Strikers when we get back and full of beer.

Exactly. I will more than likely be the only one in my circle of friends getting one. I don't want to drop sixty bones on something that will be sitting most of the time. Give me a $35-$40 controller and I might pick up one or two and will be showcasing the system to my "on the fence" friends, which in turn might be another console sale.

With 1 controller a group of guys aren't going to take turns looking like a jackass. Play time will be limited until someone pipes up and Halo 2 goes in. Put a reasonably priced controller in all their hands and that disappears.

Hell I even picked up an Xbox controller before I had the system to play Halo with my friends. No reason people wouldn't do the same with the Wii... if it weren't for the pricetag.

Wow, the new Red Steel trailer looks sweet:

Hihi. Perhaps the Wii is still region-locked.

Great idea.

grim_tales 09-15-06 04:20 PM

So the Wii can't play DVD discs now, only Wii amd 'Cube discs? Not that it bothers me as I have a DVD player anyway but.. :)

DVDKrayzie 09-15-06 04:56 PM

wow this thread is full of some really cheap bastards. But what else is new at good ol' DVDTalk. It's less than half the price of a PS3, hell it costs as much as an Ipod nano and you guys are still bitching. It's 2006, it's only $249. If you guys are really that hesitant to buy something because of a $40 diffference, you never were going to buy it for $212 either--no matter what you may say. And heaven forbid Nintendo actually makes a profit on these things, the nerve of some companies ...

pizzamousechips 09-15-06 05:21 PM

To those complaining about a $60 controller, I know it's not ideal, but you can just get multiple Wiimotes without Nunchucks. I'd bet a lot of the party games will work that way. At that rate, it's not so bad of an investment.

pinata242 09-15-06 05:25 PM

Uh oh, more confusion to the AV Cable discussion. Hopefully, for everyone, Allison is the one confused.

I'll just wait for a deal on one, or not pick one up.

I never bought a 2nd controller for my PS2 or X-box. I like to have some for nintendo systems though since they make multiplayer games I do occasionally play. But not enough to shell out $40-60. And not with Wiisports being the only multiplayer game I'll have at launch.

I'm not that bent out of shape about it really, just annoying that they are packing in a mainly multiplayer game, touting the system as a great party system for such games, and they only give you one controller and charge so much for extras.

If it wasn't for Wiisports, and that stance, I honestly wouldn't care and would just play Zelda and not worry about a 2nd controller. :D

Might be good for me, as if that's the case then maybe the GC cable will be interchangeable again.
