Some good news via GameSpot: "All first-party games and most (if not all) other Wii content will be capable of the 16:9 aspect ratio used by HDTVs, but will not be in high definition."

pinata242 09-14-06 09:13 AM

Will the DS and Wii be interoperable? "You'll be hearing more in the future about that," says Kaplan. Nothing today though.

PixyJunket 09-14-06 09:13 AM

Shit! Expensive controllers! I cried when I saw the $50 Xbox 360 ones and now this. :(

No Prime 3 at launch?! :( :(

UncleGramps 09-14-06 09:16 AM

Conference is over...off to work. I'll have to post my thoughts later...definitely a mixed bag, but I'm still counting the days until November 19th.

pinata242 09-14-06 09:17 AM

Overall underwhelming. Great to have a date even if the date is later than they promised. Great to have a price and the contents of the box. Not terribly happy about spending another $180 to get 4 controllers.

I guess the idea is to get my friends and families to get their own Wiis and their own controllers, create their own "Mii" and always carry their controllers with them. Solid plan, but it puts more burden on the guaranteed adopters to spread the word.

After all, Playing = Believing, right? Store kiosks are nowhere near as powerful as a rabid friend/relative catering to the individual.

Oh well. I'll still be there 11/19. Going home with Zelda, Trauma Center, and Metal Slug, probably.

mmconhea 09-14-06 09:19 AM

I was missing sleep about this being a big fan, but...
big disappointment for me.
I expected a lower price and a closer release.
I don't want Wii Sports, I don't want white. Why show us the other colors if they won't sell them? Haven't they learned from the purple/black GC launch fiasco?
Just fucking release black. Enough of looking different. we want black to go with all of our other black electronics damnit! Take the damn game out and lower the price. I'll pick which game I want to get with the system.

Only 15 games at launch. Poor. Also hints at lack of 3rd party support.

Virtual console games are too expensive. C'mon... starting at $5
Considering the major competitor is EMULATION, they should be lower if they want to discourage emulation and encourage buying through the console. I think $5 for a NES games is a little steep... especially considering it takes up valuable Wii space and you are limited to using it on just your own console. $5 for NES $8 for SNES $10 for GC... how many of you are running to EB to pick up actual carts for these systems... they are cheaper than these prices and you get to have a physical cart.

The WiiConnect24 with the news and weather is one thing I'm liking very much. They hint towards having to pay for it though...you pay for each channel you subscribe to... through a point system similar to XBLive... what bullshit.

The iphoto and movie thing is lame since it only takes SD cards.

The accessories and extra controllers/Component cables are pricey. The little nunchuck thing is as pricey as a standard 1st party controller for any other console.

Also I'm not liking the games over $50. I thought nintendo was against this.

I hate to sound so negative, but damn... I was expecting Nintendo to follow their pledge to be a value leader… drum up better support… and have a better launch showing.

maxfisher 09-14-06 09:22 AM

Damn. I was hoping this was a general news event and not just for the Wii, but it looks like the conference is over. I was really hoping for some news on Phantom Hourglass for the DS.

I'm pretty let down by the information we got today. All the news is either neutral or bad, imho. A big thumbs down to the controller pricing, virtual console pricing and lack of Metroid Prime at launch. A smaller thumbs down to launching after the PS3 and only having 1 controller in the box. A 'meh' to the console price and all the other details. Oh well. I'm curious what kind of connection cables will be packed with the system. I'm guessing it'll be another $30 for those of us that want better quality than the old red, white & yellow a/v cords.

Mazje 09-14-06 09:23 AM

Nice price on the console...come on, $250 for a console and a game? Regardless if it wasn't what we were expecting, it's still an even better deal than the last round of consoles. Plus, it's a better deal than any other next-gen consoles out or coming out.

On the flip side, that is very, very expensive on the controllers. I'm assuming something like Wii Sports can be played with just the controller, while something like multi-player Metroid requires two controllers and two numchuks.

Also, I know the Wavebird controllers work with the Wii...what about everything else Gamecube related? Like memory cards, Donkey Konga drums, etc.?

glasschicken 09-14-06 09:25 AM

Yeah, really a mixed bag here. Still very excited about it. Don't mind the price since it comes with Wiisports. I just don't understand why it only comes with 1 Wiimote. The price of another controller is bothering me too. Still getting it as soon as possible.

GoVegan 09-14-06 09:26 AM

I'm mostly disappointed by the date. I was starting to believe all the crazy speculation about an early October release. I'm going on a cruise on Nov. 26, and here I am thinking "Crap. That means I've only got a week with my Wii before I'm being dragged off to the Caribbean."

I'm slightly disappointed by the price, too, but I was expecting it would be more than I'd like. The most I've paid for a video game system previously was $125 for my DS.

I guess I'll be picking up a few Gamer's Gift Cards at BB. $5 off per piece will at least make it "only" $50 for the controller.

PixyJunket 09-14-06 09:29 AM

Everything Gamecube will work with the Wii for Gamecube stuff.

pinata242 09-14-06 09:30 AM

Wii Sports is honestly a negative as a pack-in to me now. With 2 sets of controllers, I was fine with it. Now to enjoy that game I need to drop $310 (maybe "only" $290  ).

I'd rather pay $230 for the same box without Wii Sports... :thmbsdwn:

Next year is the latest I've read. Disappointing since that was why I bought the lite. Fotunately there are plenty of other great games I'm enjoying.

I'd like to know more about component cable pricing.

NES - Starting at 500 points?
SNES - Starting at 800 points?
N64 - Starting at 1000 points?

I wonder how high the prices will go for each system if that's just the low end price for the games from each console.

Last time around, I'm pretty sure $250 would've gotten you a Gamecube and your choice of any launch game available. Not saying $250 is a horrible price for the Wii package, but it's certainly not some kind of unbelievable deal.

PixyJunket 09-14-06 09:37 AM

The only thing I'm TRULY disappointed in is the release date.. but that's because I wanted it NOW! I'm pretty ambivalent to everything else. It sucks that the controller is $60 for both pieces.. but for everything it has and does it's not that off. The Xbox 360 wireless is $50 and that's pretty much just a standard controller, Wii has all the motion sensing stuff and a speaker built in to it. Not really defending it, just rationalizing it.

darkside 09-14-06 09:38 AM

Wow, so much to be mad about. Zelda for the Cube pushed to December? That is total bullshit as that was the version I was planning on getting and there is no reason for it to be delayed. $60 for a controller? Honestly the VC games are the only good news and I'm still not sure how many I would buy. Opera costs extra? Was DVD playback removed? I can't believe I'm saying this, but I don't think I will be buying a Wii at launch.

PixyJunket 09-14-06 09:38 AM

By the way, the NES launched at $300.. it wasn't until they took out the robot was it a $200 package.

Flay 09-14-06 09:39 AM

Hmm, what's the point to dollar ratio? 100 points for a buck?

tpc 09-14-06 09:40 AM

What about gamecube memory cards? has this been confirmed? i've got a lot of hours of my life on those little cards, and want to be sure that they'll be supported before I get rid of my precious cube.

In theory, I guess a NES game could be over 800 points and a SNES game could be over 1000.

That's what it looks like.

Charging extra for Opera? Hmm. I'd love to surf the net on my tv, but I would definitely love mouse/keyboard support. I was hoping the 360 would do it by now.

tpc 09-14-06 09:45 AM

Nothing here's truly a deal breaker for me. I initially think a lot of this is shock based on our own inflated expectations. If you don't like Wii sports, I can see the console price being high, but if you like the idea of it, as I do, then it effectively lessens the cost of the console into the very swett 199. I'm a little shocked that they have the balls to call their system the "wii" and only include one controller, but that's the way of the world we live in these days.

60 bucks for essentially a second controller is a bit on the high side, but is offset by the value of the packin game. I'm more offended by the fat that we have to pay for web browsing than anything I've heard, but not so much so that I won't be there on launch day.
