In defense of Vandelay, a $1 region code defeat will not help for VC games, unless someone finds a way to access the VC of other countries.
However, I don't really understand what the rest of Vandelay's argument is about. Nintendo isn't on the side of value because Super Smash Bros. is still $30? You can get the Gamecube for $100 or $60 used. So a Gamecube with Super Smash Bros. is STILL cheaper than a new PS2 slim ($130 by itself) with a greatest hits PS2 game. And I think it should be clear that the company seeking to be affordable and a good value this generation is clearly Nintendo and NOT Sony. I mean, hell, even if you turn the other cheek on the $600 system pricetag, how can you look at stuff like Gran Turismo HD and say that's a company with a business model of good value? To me that's far more disturbing than the region coding issue. |
1. The GC is only 5 years old this november--not 6. It came out in Nov. 2001.
2. The Wii is more powerful than it graphically, nearly twice as much. It's not the 360 or PS3--not even close. But it isn't just the GC with a new controller either. i.e. Mario Galaxy looks MUCH better than Mario Sunshine when you see it in motion. |

And I question how a 6 year-old console with a new controller for $250, or 12-year old downloadable games for $8 can be regarded as "good value". Hell, that's almost what I just paid for my brand-new physical copies of Beyond Good and Evil and Killer 7. I'm not aware of a 6-year old console with a new controller coming out. Please elighten me. BTW: Super Mario World > BG&E and Killer7 |

That information is old, we've known that for a long time.

Also, just because VC is region-coded doesn't mean you'll only be seeing games that were originally released there. I'd imagine that for stuff that was US only before it'd just be a matter of who owns the publishing rights to it in Europe allowing it to be on the VC system. Maybe I'm reading too much into it - after all the article doesnt actually say "only games that were originally released in Europe" just "European versions" so maybe they could optimise US/Japanese stuff for Europe, I dont know :) |

Ahh, the wiimote glove mystery revealed. A rubber grip might be nice. It is cool that you get three to a pack.

Dog tags and lapel pins?
Better reserve those as I'm sure they will go fast. |

Obviously Nintendo has recognized the dangers presented by rooms full of arm waving children. This shows they care enough to make sure that the parents can identify the bodies. |

I've heard negative talk about FPS controls. Anyone know why don't they make them like a stand-up shooter (Time Crisis, Virtua Cop), just with added control-stick movement? I think aiming would be easier that way, as opposed to a 3d mouse. Stand-up shooter controls can't be twitchy.

There's a (probably BS) rumor going around about an early Wii launch.

I don't see why Nintendo would do that this late in the game. However, launching after the PS3 is a bit confusing when they seem to have plenty of consoles. I agree its probably a BS rumor. Nintendo may just be shipping them out early to have them ready for launch.
Nintendo may be counting on all the frustrated PS3 buyers getting a Wii instead when it launches. |
