Sword Controls For Zelda
Swing the Wiimote to control Link's sword.
by Anoop Gantayat
August 21, 2006 - Nintendo has made some major changes to the control scheme for the Wii version of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Speaking to Japan's monthly Nintendo Dream publication, producer Shigeru Miyamoto revealed that the game will now allow players to swing the controller for sword slashes.
At E3, players used the B button to swing Link's sword, with Nintendo explaining at the time that players would likely get tired having to actually swing the controller. "Upon actually playing it, it's more interesting this way," said Miyamoto to Nintendo Dream about the new control scheme.
Going along with this change, Nintendo has made modifications to the game's bow and arrow controls. In the E3 version, players aimed with the Wiimote, then actually shot out arrows using the D-pad. With the B button now free, Nintendo has moved the action to the B button. Miyamoto felt that that shooting the arrow with the D-pad was too difficult, and the B button allows for quicker and easier shooting.
It's unclear if the game will require the new control scheme or if players will be able to chose between different methods of control.
Nintendo Dream closed off by asking Miyamoto to name the version of Zelda he personally prefers. The master game maker said that he'd play the Wii version, but added that both versions will be fun.
"I can't talk about it yet, but this Zelda has a lot to it," said Miyamoto. "What you played at E3 was just the tip of the nail." Regarding Nintendo's statement at E3 that Twilight Princess would be the best Zelda in history, he said, "Yes. It's coming along quite nicely."
With Twilight Princess due out at launch, GameCube and Wii owners will get to fully explore the potentially greatest Zelda game ever in just a few months. Stay tuned for more!

Weren't you the one complaining that the Wii version of Zelda was a slap in the face to Gamecube owners?

It's been a 5 year gap since the beginning with no change.
I still stand behind some others in my belief that the Wii will be more successful than the Gamecube was. Some are worried about the Gamecube dying. Arguably, it's been dead for quite awhile already. Some might say it never breathed much to begin with. I liked the neglected cube, but i'll be the 1st to admit that it was no S-NES.

I'm still counting on $199 with one controller, $249 with two controllers and Wii Sports...c'mon Nintendo! You can do it!

I'd rather have one controller and a lower price. Remember, the Wiimotes come in different colors (allegedly).

Speaking of announcements, I'm looking forward to waking up to some Wii news tomorrow morning. The details have been sketchy so far, but Wii announcements of some kind are supposed to be made at the Leipzig Game Convention tomorrow. Based on the time difference, it should be happening early in the morning for those of us in the U.S. Supposedly some new games might be revealed, and it could be wishful thinking, but I'm hoping they'll announce a date and price.

Yeah, Nintendo's secretiveness has worked on me - I'm really dying for the info now. But it's gotten to the point where I don't think they can afford to wait much longer to announce the date and price - they need a decent amount of time if they really want to get the word out to the non-gamers they hope to attract. Tokyo Game Show (9/22-24) just seems too late, so Leipzig seems like a reasonable venue for them to reveal the long-awaited info. We'll know soon enough!

I think an extra controller packed-in would be a good way to reinforce the 'family fun/fun together' aspect of the console. And it sounds like it's going to be released inexpensively enough to still be a deal, and that is one more thing that would make it stand out [what was the last console that came with 2 controllers on launch day?]
Ideally a game as well, but if not a game, at least a demo disk showing off the different ways of using the controller, or some credits toward simple downloads so the older gamers can maybe share some classic games with their families/younger gamers.
So they're going to re-make GC games, enabling the controller usage? But the Wii is fully backwards compatible? So the person interested in an 'older' game could either buy the remake and take full advantage of the wireless controller, or buy a used copy of the original game [for cheaper] and play it old school? Sounds like a win-win.
HD: I have an HDTV, and certainly I would like to get as much use out of it as possible, but the support of HD isn't an instant buy for me, nor does its absence, mean no-sale. It's a bonus, sort of like voiceacting in games--VA in games does not at all affect my decision to buy a game, but if it's done right, it can add to my enjoyment.
Of course, here's one place where I'm behind the curve: I'm still wired. Two desktops, wired router, ethernet cables. If the wii goes online via wifi, how do I go about going online, should I desire to do so? Does it still support a basic wired ethernet connection? Though it would be cheaper than buying an HDTV, I don't want to have to buy new wireless connectivity stuff to go online.
Though the 360 and PS3 support HD, and I've had a PS1 and PS2, it's the Wii that is garnering most of my attention in the 'new console' realm. 360 seems to have too great a focus on online gaming or sports, and what I've heard about PS3 pricing has been frightening. They seem to be focusing on novel innovations, some new games and some remakes, and since I haven't had a Nintendo console since the NES, there's a lot of gaming franchises I missed.
