Hell yeah they are their stupid little instant flame attack is a pain in the ass especially when you're trying to stay in close enough to use chilling touch.

OK, so I haven't bought the guide yet, and I didn't play this part this long because I was playing FNR3, but how do you....

Spoiler:

Right after the emperor dies and you talk to the soldier, you cannot go inside the gate on the left, and you cannot go back where you came from.... how do you get out of there?

Lol.. that is where I got stuck at.

Spoiler:

Go back to where the emperor was killed. The opening behind him, where the assassin came out of, is still open. Go through there and you can continue your journey out of the sewers.

Whenever there's huge games like this there's always problems with game balance. Case in point:

I was killed no less than a dozen times by maniacal super-rats that live in the sewers. They'd bite me and they I would be stunned without being able to do anything except drink a potion to delay my inevitable death. No magic, movement, block, or attack would work. I don't know if this was a game bug/glitch (unlikely) or the stats engine simply favored the rats over me so much (possible).

Of course after I get out of the sewers and do the main quest, I get to the Oblivion gate and I obliterate it. None of the demon guys even stand a chance. Through the whole quest I only refilled my health once and that was when I got to the very end and was fighting all those guys at once.

I picked the same type of character I had in Morrowind, a dark elf thief/agent mix. My speed attribute is in the mid 60s.

XmiyuX pointed something out to me last night that I thought was awesome. When you play through up to the point where the emporor is killed the game makes a note of the way you play, then after the emperor is assasinated the gaurd assumes you are a certain class. I just assumed that it was a default or something because whatever he called me (can't remember now) was roughly halfway down the list, so I completely blew it off of course and became a mage Of course I'm sure you all knew that already but I missed it in all the hype about this game leading up to release and I thought is was really cool.

I bought the collector's edition yesterday at BB. They just had one more so I got suckered into it. I had the best buy buzz 10% off coupon anyways.

Also, amazon has the game guide for $11.99, so I ordered it from there. At Best Buy, it was $20!!

Currently, Im in Imperial City (just got out of the sewers), Im playing a wood elf (custom "Ranger" class).

This game is awesome so far. My girlfriend has exams tomorrow and needs to study all night. Damn, I have hours of uninterrupted playing time.

This game is awesome. Oh wait, I already said that.

I saw that as well. The guard assumed I was a Bard. When I chose mage, he responded with something like "I never would have guessed."

Alright, so help an Elder Scrolls noob out. I posted this in our Bungie clan forum, but I thought I'd get the opinions of some of the DVDTalkers as well.

I've never played an Elder Scrolls game before. Do some of you ES vets have any advice for advancing levels? I'm playing as a male Dark Elf Mage. What can I do to gain experience or learn new spells? I've basically picked up everything I come across in hopes I can use it to make potions and stuff. I'm not sure if I'm hauling around worthless things or not. What about guilds? Where do I find them and how do I get involved with them? I don't want to have to read the game guide just to play the game, but I don't want to walk around aimlessly because I know there are a lot of things I can do.

I also picked up Oblivion last night. I put about 3 hours into it. It was kinda funny seeing everyone on LIVE playing Oblivion. I think there were 6 or 7 other DVDTalkers playing last night. Man, I haven't tunrned on my 360 in a while that I didn't even know there was an update for the 360.

Anyways, I have enjoyed it so far. I'm in the Imperial Ctiy still doing a quest for one of the shop owners. For people that have a HDTV, I am missing out on alot? I was thinking about buy a 30 inch HDTV just to play Oblivion.

First off cast your spells as continuously as you can regen mana. I normally spam a low cost light spell as i'm running around to slowly level up my illusion skills. Travel to one of the outlying cities and find the mages guild if you want to join up and start faction quests.

Also, even if you have enough xp to level you don't actually gain the level until you sleep in a bed, so rent a room when you see your skill bar for gaining a level is maxed.

To learn new spells you buy them from a spell vendor, a person in your guild, or evidentally in this game when you are accepted into the Arcane University you can create your own spells.

Obviously there must be better classes and such then others.
One poster, above, stated that he had no issues killing the demons and things in the Oblivion gate. I found them incredibly hard and had to reload many times before I was able to close the gate.
I chose a male Breton, as they seemed to be good for magic. I choose the magical ability with the standard mage class.

I did manage to level up to level 2 last night, once I got into a town. I was using the Flare spell to do 6 points of damage, and my destruction skill keeps going up periodically. But I think that the spell is capped at 6 points of damage. At least at this point.

Also, whats the best way to use a spell scroll? I set one up on a hot key, but in battle, when I selected that hot key, nothing happened.

You trigger the hot key then either pull your right attack trigger or right bumper - i forget.

As for diff areas varying in difficulty it is because each creature will have different immunities/resistances. Some might have been weak to melee skills and resists magic well whereas others are flipped. Personally i hated flare but it was a nice ranged spell. I liked using the chill touch, you have to get close, but since i was mage/thief i would creep in for a sneak attack then quickly chill touch them.

My big issue now is finding some place to buy lockpicks. I'm totally out

I'm actually starting to get frustrated on the lockpick front. In Morrowind you had a thieves guild headquarters that had vendors who would sell you these things. I can't find anyone to sell me any and i have thief missions to do *sigh*

Okay so in the discussion over at xbox.com this guy tells a funny story about his excitement in getting Oblivion, I thought it was hilarious and I can sympathize with him cause I felt like a giddy nerd when I got my copy too

I went to my gaming area in my home. I sat down in front of the tv, I opened up the box and unfolded it. (btw - probably one of the better collector's edition box sets I've gotten in a while - even if it's not a tin box)

As I sat there my wife showed up. I hadn't noticed her at first and so I sat there first admiring the packaging. I pulled the gold coin out of it's place (keeping it in it's plastic baggie) and then as I stared at the coin my wife said "It came with a gold coin??"

Surprised I turned to her and before realizing what a mistake it was I said "And it came with a guide and map!" I pulled out the 2000 page book (ok maybe 500 I dunno...it's thick with small print) that was the guide to the land I was to soon explore and unfolded the map as well. I then turned to her and watched as she staired silently at the items laid out before me.

Awkward silence for about 2 minutes.

Suddenly she just busted out laughing and giggling at me while pointing at the stuff before me.

I looked down, saw the receipt for $70, the gold coin from this fantasy world, the map, and the travelers guide and just shook my head.

She then took a few seconds from giggling to say "Do you have to stop people with your visitors guide and ask directions? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"

I folded it all up and put it away until she fell asleep.Embarrassed [:$]

Thats funny.

I felt like a real nerd when playing Knights of the Old Republic one time...my girlfriend came into the living room, sat on my lap and whispered in my ear a dirty deed that she wanted to do in the bedroom. I angled sideways to not break my view of the tv and said, "Yeah, just a minute, let me get to a good place to save".

She got up off me and said, "Forget it". Of course, right away, realizing my nerdiness, I paused it, apologized to her and focused on her for the next 2-3 minutes (haha kidding...it was more like 15-30 minutes).

Gaming would be so much easier without girlfriends/wives.

Im sure this game will get me into trouble over the next couple weeks.

Buy lockpicks? How many did you break?!?

On a somewhat unrelated note...I'm playing in a fight night r3 tournament and had to meet my match online last night. So as I'm booting up the game and creating it, the wife is sitting there on the couch with me, knitting a blanket and is smirking. As I start pummelling the dude I'm playing against, she gets up and heads to the bedroom, mumbling about the differences between us. I'm gaming online chatting with a dude I've never met, and she's knitting a baby blanket for a friend. But then I figured, since I already had my geek on, I popped in Oblivion and created my character before Scrubs came on, then geeked out HARD after that.

ok, I guess it was more funny last night. :\

I picked this up yesterday (pricematching at Best Buy thanks to CompUSA), and even though I'm an Elder Scrolls noob, I'm enjoying it a lot so far. Since I'm new to the series, I'm sticking to the main plot so far. I just closed the first Oblivion gate, and I'm looking forward to reaching a point where I feel comfortable going off on some side quests. I'm leaning towards doing some thief or assassin stuff. Can you join multiple guilds, or only one at a time? I'm sure it talks about this in the manual, but I'm at work now and forgot to bring it with me. Man, I'm just itching to get back home and fire this up...
