I've only played/experienced a few RPGs.
Dragon Warrior for NES, because a buddy and mine played it together. I don't think I would've played this if it wasn't for him.
FFIII on SNES - I didn't really play this on my own. My cousin had it, and I used the second controller to play as Alex (or whoever the guy is that does blitz attacks.
Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door on GC - I'm helping my girlfriend play this game right now, and the main reason we wanted to play it was because it's Mario. I'm not sure if its the whole Mario image or what, but I really like this game.
KOTOR on Xbox - got frustrated playing this on my friend's xbox because it took too long to get into.
Lunar on Sega CD - I actually finished this game, but used a guide most of the time. I don't think I would've finished it without it, not because I couldn't figure it out, but I don't think I would've had the patience.
For some reason, I just can't get into RPGs. I know its ignorant, but when I think RPG, I think of telling you're player what to do, then watching him do it. But there's so much buzz around Oblivion, that I'm trying to get myself hyped to try it out. Someone earlier mentioned they love this series, and they don't really play RPGs. I'm wondering if anyone thinks I'm in the same situation. Given my experience with RPGs thus far, does anyone think I could possibly get into this game? I don't think I've ever purchased a video game based on pure hype, but I'm getting really close. If I do pick this game up, I think I would only pick it up this week with that great price CompUSA has on it.

I'm with you eatntae. The only RPGs I have ever played were FF7 (a friend walked me through the second half), Zelda:OOT, Morrowind, and UO. I liked Morrowind because it was basically an MMORPG without the MMO. That is, there was no forced storyline. That turned me off from games like Final Fantasy and to an extent, Zelda. (I got to the last guy but never beat him).

This game is amazing I have only played for 2 hours and all I can say is wow! The real fun starts when you leave the underground level what beauty! I have not experienced any freezes or lag on the 360 at all. I really think anyone who likes RPGs will love this game.

I think a big part of the allure is that Elder Scrolls is one of those games where you have to stop thinking of it as a game and start thinking of it as a world that you can jump into and do anything. People talk like that about GTA but this surpasses GTA in its immersion by a metric buttload.

I have about 4.5 hours logged on my save game right now and i'm bouncing off the walls waiting to play some more. I started my first thieves guild quests and am looking for ingredients to make cool potions and raise my alchemy. Hell, i haven't even touched the main storyline yet, i'm all about the faction quests. Trying to save up and buy my own shack!

sigh - can anyone who has the game guide tell me if I'm missing anything if my game manual is missing pages 9-16 and 33-45 (I got two sets of pages 17-32)? Is what I'm missing generally covered in the guide, or maybe not that important? I don't like the prospect of having to waste time exchanging the game just for the game manual

Pages 33-45 shows base skills for the school of restoration, mysticism, alteration, how to make potions with alchemy, enchant things, the stealth game (lockpicking minigame), crimes and their penalties, how to do dialogue, bartering, and persuasion minigame.
Honestly you ought to have the big strategy guide (in my opinion) and it includes anything you are missing. If you need more info i can answer questions or maybe someone can scan the pages for you.

Traded in Call of Duty and Condemned at EB and got Elder Scrolls Oblivion:CE for free. They're having a special right now apparently: trade in any two 360 games, get one free.
I even managed to still get the 20% off the guide, so when all was said and done I only paid $16 and change for everything.
Huzzah!

traded in burnout and full auto (both got for $47 at frys) for the collector's edition for free. i guess im the only one who did not purchase the strategy guide since he just rings it up w/o asking me so the total was like $16 and i was like wtf. i then say i dont want the strategy guide and he gets MAD. what the hell is wrong with gamestop employees they are like brainwashed to sell these and preorders. he was like you NEED this guide. I told him that would take the fun out of it and he goes into a rant about how long and tedious the game is w/o it (basically saying th egame is crap w/o the guide i guess). Then he says did you play part 3, i say yes (i lied just to shut him up) and he then said well did you find everything? I again said yes, and then he starts naming off all this shit, which I have no idea about to see if i really did it. These fuckers are so damn annoying, that's why I try not to buy my games from them. If I'm not trading stuff in or dont need it on day 1, it's fry's all the way.

got this around noon today at CompUsa for only $39.99 after coupon. I've only gotten to play for an hour so far because of work/classes, but so far it's really enjoyable. stupid bandit killed me on the way to my first town.

I have about 8 hours in my game and have yet to do a single mission to advance the main storyline. I haven't even delivered the amulet yet. I've been hitting the faction quests and a couple random quests.

It is interesting to see that you have so many choices in how to follow the story.
I have a number of quests already completed. I started off, after the sewers, finding the person you are told to look for. On the day, I finished another side quest when I passed by a town that had invisible inhabitants.
I then made my way, as Slitt did, to the Oblivion gate. I managed to make it through there, after many tries, and closed the Oblivion Gate, and received an achiviment.
From there, I found the next person in line. And am working on another couple quests.
The diary system and quest management really make it easy to see what you have done, what you need to to and what you are currently doing.
The graphics and sounds are stunning. Though in the Olbivion gate, everything was really red and dark. It was hard to see at times.
What kind of characters is everyone playing?
I'm a male, mage Breton.

I'm a Male Dark Elf Mage, I closed the first Oblivion Gate last night, it didn't seem too hard but after that I met up with the next guy and went through a few of the short quests for him but I have no freakin clue how much more I have to do for this guy before this part of my quest is complete. I think after I am done with him I'm going to go ahead and drop the main quest for a bit and go increase my Mage status.

Heh.. that guy didn't last long with me. The first couple times I tried that Oblivion level, I sent him back and tried to tackle it on my own. That didn't work out so well as I never reached the castle.
The first time I kept him, he got crushed by an avalanche of rocks.
Then, I kept him back while I killed the demon in the rock slide. Then he followed me, only to die shortly before I got in the building. I had to do the rest on my own.
I hope keeping him alive didn't stop me from another quest and/or achivement down the line. Because I'd really hate to have to reload an early save point and do the Oblivion plane all over again.
I think I'm also going to stop advancing the main story line for now. Build up my character, do a bunch of the side quests and such.

Ohh.. yeah... That guy is fine, he's the main Guard of that town, I believe.
The guy inside the Oblivion gate, I took with me and he died. Poor guy. Those demon things are nasty hard.
