You can say that again. It is definitely looking like this was not intentional.

I wonder if anyone is kicking themselves or got fired over the whole "Every 10 Seconds" promotion. Just think. That could have been 9,000 more consoles in sales that Microsoft would have gotten. Instead of giving them away. Sure, they got some promotion and hype from it, but I would think actual sales would have been better.

For all we know, those could have been sold to Pepsi.

But it's no different if you launch with 400,000 and sell them all, and have 100,000 people looking for them and not finding them. Obviously the numbers are made up, but you get the drift.
It is slightly different because of perception. If you sell out, you create hype and talks of a shortage, the media eats it up, and suddenly everyone wants one (even if just to ebay). So say you have a million units, and you put them all out on shelves on day 1. 500k sell, but most see that it's readily available and aren't as anxious to get one. But put out 400 K first, that leaves 100K of initial buyers out of the loop, but creates enough demand to sell out of all 600K that are left. Of course, if you don't have that extra 600K, then it doesn't make a difference.

It's true, though that with the shortage and the phenomenal amount of ebay sellers, we can't gauge true demand. We'll see when it becomes readily available. To me, the original Xbox got a lot of it's popularity by being the technologically superior machine, great for 3rd party games that were cross-platform. It'll be interesting to see what happens when both are on equal footing (or if the situations are actually reversed).

Sorry to digress in this thread. Good luck getting one everybody!

At one point, they had premiums available but I didn't see that anyone actually got those. There were a few at "chubbymoneyholder.com" that reported getting an order in for the standard bundle that I posted as a "consolation" for not getting the short lived premium bundle at etoys.

Well, you know Pepsi had to pay something for that campaign. I'm sure Mt.Dew sales spiked during the contest.

Oh, I agree 100%.

I was just going buy the traditional definition of success, which is strong sales. You can't have strong sales if there's not product to sell, and there's also know way to gauge demand (as you agreed) until more of these get into stores and all the hardcore gamers have them.

You just need to convince your wife that if you bought two and sold one on ebay you'd have a free 360 for yourself. That shouldn't be that hard to do, just point her to ebay and show her what they are going for.

She would just tell me to tell that to my beanie baby friends in that box in the closet.

With my luck, I would end up just getting one.

That's when you hide out back and wait for the UPS guy to roll up.

Anyone see that they only shipped 300,000 units to Europe?

Never in a million years did I think the same issue would strike Microsoft.

None at Fry's in San Diego at 2:45pm. None came in today either. None in the computer system at any other store.

Was at Best Buy during lunch today and asked about it. Sure enough, they told me they won't be getting any in anytime soon.

that and they did not have plans for a fast, low power chip (like intel's yonah, which is rumored to be the first chip used in the new apple boxes). hmmm, isn't heat dissipation a concern with these boxes.

seems like a little poetic justice (not meant as a flame towards windows -- i use both xp and os x).

btw, still have not seen evidence locally of a second shipment.

Checked all my local stores today. Nobody has seen one since launch. I heard everything from after the 25th until next March.

I checked a bunch of local stores today.

Here's where I went and what I learned.

CompUSA Clueless

Circuit City Spoke with manager, clueless. Had to tell idiot floor salesperson there isn't a recall going on.

Target (I went to 2 of them) Target Greatland received a 2nd shipment in last Tuesday. They were immediately grabbed by the people who work there. It is possible 2 of them ended up on the floor. Apparently there is no policy against this. I also heard another Target Greatland received a 2nd shipment, but less details about that.

Best Buy (I went to 2 of them) Sticking to their guns on the 18th relaunch. They are expecting a shipment in on the 16th (none before that) and selling them all the 18th. They might be opening early for this, but nothing specific.

Didn't go to Walmart, I hate going to Walmart.

My advice for everyone out there: if you want to get one before Christmas, you'll either have to:

1) Be extremely lucky and be in the right place at the right time (probably for Targets and Walmarts, and other non-Best Buy stores).

2) Camp out at Best Buy the 17th to get one the morning of the 18th.

3) Buy one on Ebay.

Basically MS isn't going to be dropping a shitload of these anywhere. Honestly, I would forget about it until after the holidays unless you want to camp out at Best Buy. And at that point you might as well wait a little longer.

See my post. The 18th is the big day for Best Buy's everywhere. They are sticking to this.

Here's the reason you won't get any at Walmart or Target or anywhere else:

THE EMPLOYEES ARE BUYING THEM BEFORE THEY HIT THE FLOOR

So either plan to get it at Best Buy on the 18th or next year.

That sucks!!! But what's too keep the BB employees from buying the majority of the shipment too? From what I heard, they are allowed to buy as many as they want from this shipment, (unlike the launch). I overheard this one scumbag BB employee saying that he is going to be getting 5 and putting them all on ebay.

Edit: I think the best bet is to find one online. This way you don't have to deal with greedy employees. And no I don't mean ebay, I mean stores like Amazon.
