Man, a post says wee and the next one says make out. *giggles to self*

Teaching junior high is starting to get to me i think.

Doug Schiller 12-09-05 04:36 PM

Splinter Cell doesn't work for me.
I even burned the latest to a disc and everything.
Let me know if anyone has any luck with it.

lotsofdvds 12-09-05 05:31 PM

I got the patch last night, no problem. Played through the training mission of Splinter Cell without difficulty. It won't let me download the "new" maps for it though.

Doug Schiller 12-09-05 07:15 PM

You happen to have the default.xex file?
MS is killing me. Not everyone cares about Halo 2. I want to play Chaos Theory on the 360.

Update - Never mind, it just worked for me.

Update:

Microsoft Recalls Xbox 360 Backward Compatibility Update

A new update for Microsoft's growing list of Xbox games that are compatible with the new Xbox 360 was released on December 8th, but the update has already been removed from official servers following compatibility issues discovered with games already covered in the original backward-compatible roster.

Several games in Ubisoft's Tom Clancy-licensed series, including Ghost Recon, Ghost Recon 2, Ghost Recon 2: Summit Strike, all three Splinter Titles, including the original, Pandora Tomorrow, and Chaos Theory, and both Rainbow Six 3 as well as Rainbow Six 3: Black Arrow were included in the new update. (Only Ghost Recon: Island Thunder and Rainbow Six 3: Lockdown were missing from a full Tom Clancy complement of Xbox titles.)

As with other games released as backward-compatibility profiles for the Xbox 360, the new titles were playable in increased resolution and widescreen support. However, those who installed the update discovered that it took away such support from another important title: Microsoft's own Halo 2. After updating the backward-compatibility list, Halo 2's graphics were only available in the standard 4:3 resolution, a jump back from its previously upgraded 16:9 rendition on the 360.

Microsoft has since removed the compatibility upgrade, presumably in order to post a corrected version with full Halo 2 functionality restored in the near future.

DoomsDave 12-10-05 01:36 PM

The issue has been resolved:

DVDGamer 12-10-05 03:39 PM

I was happy to learn about backward compatibility with Rainbow Six/Ghost Recon 2. But was disappointed that it was in 4:3 resolution. Do we have a list of old Xbox games that are in widescreen mode?

Doug Schiller 12-11-05 08:01 AM

Actually, most Xbox games were in widescreen.
But if there weren't on the the original, they didn' make them widescreen on the X360.
That was something I thought they would do.

So Splinter Cell 1 & 2 run at 4:3 @ 720p.

JoshUnt 12-11-05 11:31 AM

I thought HD signals had to be 16:9 and that was a major reason to have HD. So why is it that a video game would use 4:3, it is like taking a step backwards. I also didn't know it was possible to have true HD in a 4:3 ratio.

I may be getting confused here, but when I tried Half Life 2 it went to 4:3 ratio when I selected 720p. So I switched my Xbox 360 to 480p and it went back to 16:9.

I thought Half Life 2 was just not supporting 720p. Am I wrong here???

DJ_Longfellow 12-12-05 06:27 AM

You can still have things running in 720p but in a 4:3 format. I was watching the Pistons game last night on WB-HD and it was in 4:3 format.

I personally though Half-Life 2 didn't run that great in 1080i on the 360....I didn't even try to switch it to 480p

Patch renders Xbox games unplayable on 360

Xbox 360 Fanboy has the scoop on the latest backwards compatibility drama for the Xbox 360. In introducing an update to include Tom Clancy titles last week, Microsoft somehow disabled 16:9 support for Halo 2. The update was promptly pulled and patched, but numerous complaints have been posted that the patch does not install correctly, rendering backwards compatibility dead all together. It’s unclear how widespread the bug is, but it’s a good idea to hold off on the patched update if you haven’t already downloaded it.

What a cluster fuck. MS really dropped the ball on this. I'd be pissed if I had sold my X-box for a 360 like I thought about months back as I'm currently playing through Halo 2 for the first time, and have KOTOR 2 and PoP:WW on deck. And plan to pick up Jade Empire eventually.

Yeah... Thanks... I sold mine in preperation knowing the xbox price would drop once the 360 came out. I still make out better if I rebuy, but will have to recustomize again.

So is it bad enough that buyers shouldn't consider backwards compatibility as a selling point? I never owned an Xbox and one of the reasons I was planning on buying a 360 was that I'd have a lot of great games that I'd never got to play available at cheap prices.

loneranger 12-13-05 09:31 AM

World Series Baseball 2K3 still doesn't work even though it's on the list.

It will be eventually. They'll get the kinks worked out of the system. They have too much invested in BC now to just give up on it.

Probably not in the long term, they'll get the kinks worked out.

But maybe reason to wait for a price drop while they work it out.

Anyone know what happened to Sid Meier's Pirates? It was included on the original list at xbox.com (and in the original post of this thread) but is missing from the current official list: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/back...ygameslist.htm

I wanted to pick it up during the TRU sale, but won't if it isn't compatible. Anybody have the game that can try it on a 360?

Thanks!

Anyone heard anything about if/when they are working on Far Cry: Instincts.

FCI and Battlefront are the last 2 games I am worried about

gr8fuldave 12-25-05 11:41 AM

This might be a reason Far Cry isn't B/C

On down the page is a new release date for a new Far Cry

Doug Schiller 12-25-05 10:58 PM

I got my second 16x9 on Xbox, 4x3 on Xbox360 BC...

SSX3 (same deal as Half-Life 2).

I wonder if we can expect this to ever get fixed.

fumanstan 12-30-05 12:03 AM

I've also considered Backwards Compatibility just a bonus rather then a necessity, but Microsoft's handling of it has been awfully frustrating as far as news and confirmations. I wish they would be more open about it if they want to push it as a feature.

I heard from one developer, when asked about the compatibility of an upcoming (and somewhat well known) game with the 360, say that MS only told them to wait and see when the game is released and see how popular it is. I know that's only one first hand encounter that i've heard, but it's certainly dissapointing that MS isn't trying agressively to ensure the compatibility of games that are still being released.

lotsofdvds 12-30-05 10:17 AM

That's just absurd. Microsoft should make it a priority to have all new released backwards compatible. 360 gamers who've disconnected their original Xboxes would buy new Xbox games during the next six months when there's not much coming out, and that's just more cash in Microsoft's pocket.

sracer 12-30-05 09:46 PM

Has anyone had any luck getting games that are NOT on the compatibility list to work on the 360? In particular, I'm interested in LAND OF THE DEAD.

gr8fuldave 12-31-05 08:22 AM

For me, when I put in incompatible games, it tells me that it's not b/c yet :( I'm holding onto my original XBOX to play MVP NCAA College Baseball on .

As mentioned, the 360 will promt you that the game is not BC. Unless there is a specific file on the HD for the game tell the 360 how to handle the data, there is no chance it will play.

Yeah, no kidding. I'd think that games like Star Wars Battlefront 2, the new Prince of Persia, the new Gauntlet, Ultimate Spiderman, X-men Legends 2, etc. would be on the priority list. The sports games I can kinda understand, since it forces you to buy the 360 native versions.

edstein 01-13-06 11:26 PM

Any new updates to the compatabtility file. My Chaos Theory keeps locking up before is finishes loading the first mission. Doom 3 doesn't work at all.

Barbie Horse Adventures!

Cardiff Giant11 01-14-06 10:42 AM

Has anyone else noticed that Halo tends to stutter a bit when played on the 360? It seems to be the portions where it says "Loading..." during a level. On the original XBox it took maybe half a second, on the 360 there's a noticeable pause and then it gets jerky for a second or two afterwards. Very annoying. Halo 2 seems to be fine though

BeanDip0001 01-17-06 07:08 AM

i've noticed something, i put in crimson skies the other day and went ahead and changed down to 480p widescreen and played some single player, i put halo 2 in and forgot i had it set to 480p anyway the damn game ran better while playing the single player than it ever does when i'm in 1080i. might just be my 360 but you guys might want to try too.

fujishig 01-17-06 10:38 AM

Hmm... never thought of changing resolutions, though that's crappy if you want to just pop the game in and play.

Speaking of Crimson Skies... I was able to download all of the Live content for free except for the last one, which gave me some kind of error. Did anyone else download all the content?

BravesMG 01-17-06 10:47 AM

I'm a huge XBox supporter and I've been defending the backwards compatibility from the beginning, but this is getting ridiculous. Every interview I've read said they will be constantly updating the list. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect at least one game a week, and especially the new XBox titles that have been mentioned in this thread. I haven't heard a word out of any of the BC engineers or technicians since launch, I'm starting to lean toward a lot of the other posts that say having true backwards compatibility will never happen.
