Bump for question.

Has anybody heard when the next round of backwards compatible titles will be announced? And will it be a round of games or single titles announced?

I guess I was naive when I thought they would have a few additional games added to the list by now. I'm not bitching about it, I was pretty impressed with the initial list. But this is driving me crazy for a lot of my Xbox games that I can't decide whether or not to trade in.

fujishig 11-30-05 05:31 PM

I'm beginning to think that they might as well not have bothered with this backwards compatibility thing. At this point, I have to keep my original Xbox, as most of my newer games (Battlefront 2, Xmen Legends 2, NCAA) won't work. And because there's no way to transfer files from one to the other, I have to start all of my old games over anyway. To me, the whole point of backward compatibility would be to be able to pick up and play my old games on a whim, and continue where I left off... I'm certainly not going to start every single game over again, even if it does work flawlessly (which isn't guaranteed, even if it's on the list).

I know, I know, they'll update the list and all... but the saved games thing is still a huge thing to me. Ironically, the Xbox Hard Drive turned out to be both a blessing and a curse...

xhonzi 11-30-05 08:25 PM

I see your point about having to hold onto the old xbox... but I'm personally looking forward to the graphics improvements since I play on a front projection system.

Exactly. How hard would it be to use the same memory cards? Really. The whole BC issue is a joke. Should have just left it at 0 games supported. No BC at all.

loneranger 12-01-05 09:30 AM

Has anyone tried running World Series Baseball 2k3 on their 360? It's on the list but it doesn't work for me.

DJ_Longfellow 12-01-05 10:06 AM

Well, Blitz the League does not work....I traded for it on this board, but now I cannot play it. It's ok thoguh....I'll live.

lotsofdvds 12-01-05 02:46 PM

More titles removed from the initial list:

Catwoman
Codename: Kids Next Door
Curse: The Eye of Isis
NBA LIVE 2003
Sid Meier’s Pirates
Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

I guess Microsoft found out that the one person who owns a copy of this isn't getting a 360. :)

"Xbox.com: By what date do you plan to have all original Xbox games backward compatible?

Todd: We're continuing to work hard to certify as many original Xbox games to work on Xbox 360 as possible; we'll be adding to the list regularly.

Xbox.com: What criteria do you use in choosing which Xbox games will be backward compatible on Xbox 360? How far back into the Xbox game library are you going to go?

Todd: When we say Xbox library, we mean the entire Xbox library. This ranges all the way from our launch in 2001 up to games that haven't even shipped yet. As we've said before, we prioritized the top-selling titles and those games with a large Xbox Live following for launch, and we're going deeper into the portfolio every day."

Prioritizing top-selling titles, but the Splinter Cell games aren't on the list? Kind of kills his credibility when top-selling games aren't on the list, but a bunch of lesser games are on it.

Sounds like marketing BS to me. I highly doubt that there will be a time when every XBox game works on the 360.

fujishig 12-01-05 03:39 PM

I don't think it's necessarily BS... and I'm sure they are trying to prioritize the major sellers. They'd love to have Splinter Cell work, but there are probably some issues with the emulation. At the same time, it's good that they're not solely focusing on the major sellers. Some of the ones that are already compatible that are secondary titles were probably either really easy to emulate or shared some kind of engine with other titles that were on the list.

I do think they're trying hard... I just wish they'd have planned at least for all new games (and games that came out maybe since October or so) to be compatible. As it is, if I traded in my Xbox and just bought the new Prince of Persia game this week, I'd be out of luck.

Puzznic 12-01-05 04:33 PM

Once they get Panzer Dragoon and the first Buffy game to work i can feel good about selling my first Xbox. It's definitely in their best interest to get everything working, look how long Sony made money on PS1 games.

Zwerchfell 12-01-05 05:04 PM

I played DOA3 and Ninja Gaiden on the 360 and they both don't run to well. There they slowdowns and in DOA3 the videos stutters. Halo 1 runs fine.

DJ_Longfellow 12-02-05 06:52 AM

I played Half-Life 2 finally and I did not enjoy it on my 360. It seemed to run a bit slow, or maybe it was just me. I personally was a bit bored by the game. That is why it's in the trade forum noww :)

NOOOOO!!!! That really sucks, I just got that a week before the 360 came out and I was going to start it this weekend.

I've only played Deathrow so far from the BC list. It wasn't bad but there were noticeable stutters, I couldn't tell if it was my old game or a system glitch.

I still can't find ANYTHING about any upcoming future BC titles, anybody else dug anything up?

joshd2012 12-02-05 09:08 AM

Is there a list of Xbox games that run exactly like they are supposed to on the 360?

From what I've seen and heard, it seems like the stuttering is one of the major glitches across the board. I can't imagine having to re-patch the patch for these BC games, so could we be stuck with them? The more I think about it, I can't think of a single game that anyone I know or on this board has mentioned without issue except for Halo 1 and 2. I'm curious to hear if MS has an opinion on how the BC list is functioning against their expectations.

Even people on this board have mentioned feeling "held back" or "slowed down" while playing Halo 2, so I wouldn't even say that was a total sucess. I am just wondering how many of these games are playable the way they were originally intended to be played.

DJ_Longfellow 12-02-05 11:06 AM

Yeah, it seems most games are slowed down. Halo 2 did seem ok though....Half-Life 2 is another story.

Not a BIG deal to me, sicne I got rid of most of my other games....I enjoy my 360 games a LOT more.

DVDGamer 12-02-05 11:07 AM

I played Kill Switch and couldn't save a game in progress.

I figure I'll limit the Xbox games I'll play on 360. Don't want to add wear and tear to an expensive machine that may cause it to breakdown earlier. I'll stick with mostly 360 games, n keep playing older games in the Old Xbox.

Pardon perhaps a dumb question, I am ridiculously uneducated on stuff like patches or emulators and anything computer hardware related. But are you saying there is additional wear and tear on the 360 by playing BC Xbox games on the 360 or just the fact that playing any game on the 360 is wear and tear?

The second part. Playing any game on a 360 will cause wear and tear. He is saying he doesn't want to add to that when he can just play his Xbox games on his Xbox and his 360 games on his 360.

Doug Schiller 12-02-05 11:56 AM

I'm going to keep a spreadsheet of the changing list. Along with those mentioned, I noticed...

Freedom Fighters, Grabbed by Ghoulies, Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, Legend of Wrestling, Rugby 2005, Ghost Recon 2

are on the original list but now have been removed.

The only thing added is the Halo 2 MP pack.

I'll keep checking for differences as they happen.

This "Wear and Tear" stuff is a bit misleading. Aside from the disc spinning, there's not really many mechanical parts that the 360 has. It's not like using one car instead of splitting your time between two.

If anyone would like to start a list of Xbox compatibility games and ratings, or has a link to one, I'll gladly contribute.

Not to get too technical, but there are plenty more moving parts in that thing besides the DVD drive. All Xbox games must access a hard drive - which have a MTF based on rotations. The fans within the system (and I think someone mentioned the power supply has fans too?) also have a MTF for the engines based on rotations. Will you ever hit that MTF? Probably not. But it does cause extra wear on the system.

I think I'll just steal what you guys said and try to sound smart with some of my other friends :D. The only thing that came to my mind was that I didn't know if the 'patch' (or whatever needs to be d/l to the 360 to run the BC games) would require more memory or processing power to run and then over a LONG period of time possibly wind the system down quicker. I assumed it didn't since the file is so small, but I have no idea.

What is MTF? Or are you meaning to say MTBF ?

Does anybody know if it's official that Sid Meier's Pirates! is no longer BC?

Mean Time to Failure.

Also regarded at MTTF.

Or sometimes they say MTBF (Mean Time Before Failure or Mean Time Between Failure).

JoshUnt 12-02-05 03:56 PM

I have tried Halo 2 on the 360 and it runs the same, I had no slow downs on the single player or on LIVE. It does look a little better in 720p.

Now I have Half Life 2 and played it on the 360, but have nothing to compare it to as I didn't play it on Xbox. The reviews of the game state it as having some issues. The loading can get old as it happens quite a bit, but it is rather short. I also had to play Half Life 2 in 480p to have it fit my screen for some reason. I only tried 720p, but did not try 1080i.

lotsofdvds 12-08-05 11:34 PM

New titles added:

# Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon™ 2
# Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon® 2 Summit Strike
# Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six® 3 Black Arrow™
# Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell®
# Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell® Chaos Theory™
# Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell® Pandora Tomorrow™

good, I was wondering when yhey were going to add the Splinter Cell series.

I tried Half-Life 2 on mine...I only hve 1080i and it seemed to be a bit slow. I didn't try 480p, but i don't really care anymore. I'm going to trade the game or sell it, just looking for offers in my trade thread. I guess I didn't really enjoy the game much....I prefer multiplayer with my FPS.

DARTH GAMER 12-09-05 08:04 AM

Does anyone know when they will be offering the disc you can purchace if you can't download them. I keep checking the xbox site and it says available early December. Am I in the right place or is there a different site to get this.

DJ_Longfellow 12-09-05 08:06 AM

I thought you could D/L on the internet and burn a disc for yourself....

Doug Schiller 12-09-05 08:55 AM

They giveth, the taketh away.

Mortal Kombat Deception is now off the list.

Can't wait to play Splinter Cell Chaos Theory again in 720p.

Believe it or not, I do not own a computer at home. Everything I do on a computer, I do at work, including teaching a Photoshop course. If I had a computer, it would only be my most expensive game system. Thats about it.

Josh H 12-09-05 10:54 AM

Does you computer at work not have a CD burner?

buzzdalf 12-09-05 11:14 AM

So how do you do this D/L to burn a disc?
Is there a site to D/l the needed stuff from?

Nope. I'm at a high school and even if it did, I think Administration would have a problem with me burning game software. Maybe i'll try to locate a student of mine who does and see if they could do it fo me. There are perks to this job besides June, July and August.
