Personally, I almost never replay a game I have finished, so backwards compatibility is unimportant to me about 95% of the way. On the other hand, I can see why people would want it and it is a nice option.
But, backwards compatibility only started with the PS2. Thats why it seems kind of strange to me when people act as if we had since 1976. |

I very rarely replay games either as I don't have a lot of gaming time. I'm glad Half Life 2 is on the list as I just pre-ordered it using the pre-order deal at Game Rush. I'm still amazed they did not hold that title and make it a 360 launch title. |
I sold my Xbox + 16 games for $350 on Ebay and it helped me be able to afford the 360. You guys who can hang on to all your old stuff are lucky and must have a nicely expendable income.

I think the fact that it is on the same medium (DVD) and essentially the same controller is what drives us to expect BC. Nintendo was so different everytime, it didn't seem to make sense.
And now games are supposed to be about content and fun factor more than technology. (I know, if this were totally true, then we wouldn't be so interested in the xbox 360) Anyways, I would like to play all my old games. Especiall in 720p. This is a major factor for me. Not deal breaker, but probably deal maker. Xhonzi |

The Game Gear was backwards compatible with Master System games (with an add-on). The Game Boy Color was backwards compatible with Game Boy games. The Game Boy Advance was backwards compatible with both Game Boy Color and Game Boy games (this was released after the PlayStation 2, but it was in development before the PS2 came out). |

From a technical perspective, the Xbox and Xbox360 could not be much more different. For the few (apparently) who understand the implications of that, BC was not expected and is just an added bonus. |

Well I sold my GameCube + 2 games for around $100. Then my Xbox + games for $350. So none of the money is actually coming from my pockets.
A lot of my games for Xbox were cheapie too. You woulda been surprised what you would have gotten for an Xbox and a bunch of games a couple of months ago. Plus a nice high quality presenation for the auction doesn't hurt. |

I'm glad to see Half-Life 2 on the list.....I'm picking this up this week, I guess I'll hold off to start it though, since I cannot transfer saves.

I realize the hardware was very different between the NES and SNES etc. I didn't mean to imply otherwise (certainly not that the only thing holding up BC was the different carts). I was just pointing out to the other poster that (despite appearances) there really was not much difference in the medium used by the NES, SNES, etc., other than a different form factor and larger ROMs. Thus, while this may indeed have created an expectation of no BC, it really was an artificial one. Even if the carts had been exactly the same, BC still wouldn't have been feasible between the NES and SNES. In other words, while consumers may very well expect (e.g.) the XB and 360 to be BC based on the fact that they use the same medium, that really isn't a sound reason for having such expectations. From a technical perspective, this often won't make any sense. I have come across people who think the PS2 should be able to play Xbox games and vice versa--after all, they both use discs! I did not expect it to be BC, from the begining I knew it would be very difficult for them to pull off. (Check older threads) The real problem is (IMO) that MS has used "BC" to market this system, therefore it should be widely supported, or in the very least deliver the more popular titles as promised. It is not a "bonus" when it is being used to sell systems, it is a product feature. |
If there's a 5 MB download for each XBox game for backward compatibility, then it's not just an issue of play testing games to certify them as backwards compatible. They're actually patching the code and tweaking it so it'll work with the emulator.

I know there are signifigant (which may itself be too small of a word) differences between the xbox and the 360, but won't the OS be mostly the same? And excuse my assumptions because I really don't know, but isn't that the main thing? I think it's more akin to expecting a Win98 game to run in WinXP or something...
But maybe I'm wrong. Again. :) Xhonzi |

It doesn't matter how long backwards compatibility has been around, it's been introduced, the competition will have it next gen, so it's dissappointing to some that the 360 doesn't have full compatibility. Obviously its not a feature that everyone wants, but some people do like to replay games, and some have games they haven't bought/played yet. It shouldn't be a deal breaker for some, but it will be enough to sway some people who were already on the fence about buying one. |

I couldn't care less about either myself though. |

Out of about a dozen games or so that I've got, Prince of Persia and SSX 3 are the only ones on that list. They're also available on PS2/Cube so the exclusives I've got that are barely getting me to keep my Xbox aren't up there. Oh well, I wasn't planning on getting one at launch anyway, so I'm sure the list will be more in my favor once I decide to get a 360.
|
I really don't care TOO much about BC. I'm only keeping a few games anyways. Looks like I may trade in my Battlefield, MVP, Madden 06 and a few other games this week. I can still get GOOD credit for them at GameRush. However, there are a few I'd like to keep, but no BC yet. Like Doom3 and Timesplitters:FP and a few others. I guess I'll get rid of my Midway Arcade Treasures also. I liked having them, but I honestly played them once or twice, so no big loss.
I'll just have lots of credit at GameRush.... |
Nothing about any Madden games are on there either.
Shameful. |

I still play Madden 2006, it is not on the list.

Ive been a HUGE xbox fan. Its the only console that I own and I play it alot. BUT, the specs for the new system and lack of backward compatibility are really turning me off. I will NOT be buying one at least for a while. The only thing now that can get me to buy one is if they have a game exclusively on the xbox that I want to play (like a sequel to Fable or Star Wars KOTOR). |
No Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball = No Sale
:) |
Dman gamefly just sent me an email sale. I would love to pick up Conker and Destroy All Humans, but they would be coasters for my 360.

There were some sports games that were HD too, right? I wonder if it's coincidence or if there was an issue with games that were already HD... Xhonzi |

Currently, I am playing NBA 2K6 and its ws 720p. But, I also see alot of hd resolution games on the list (like Freedom Fighters). |

I was just responding to the poster saying it was unreasonable for people to expect BC since it had only been introduced last gen. |

I'm not saying it's good that it's not there.. but even though it's a popular title, I think there's probably less demand for it on BC than less popular, more individual games like Panzer Dragoon or Otogi.

Plus, IIRC correctly, the 360 version of Madden was kind of half assed in that it has no franchise mode and you can only play a single season repeatedly.
So some may prefer to play the x-box version. |
