I knew the 1908 year meant they were talking about the Model T Ford, but the word "these" makes it sound like they are looking for the more generic answer or at the very least leaving it open to both answers. Had the used the word "this" instead, it would have been clear they wanted the more specific answer and "cars" wouldn't have been a correct response had they done so. When the New York times published the clue, they changed the word from "these" to "this", making it clear that the way it was worded on the show was misleading.
