Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

If Richards had just kept quiet and not tried for the hosting gig no one would have said a word and he'd still have his job. He got greedy and his past came back to bite him in the ass.

Variety says he was fired as EP. sounds like it’s uncertain if his five episodes that are in the can will even air. I think Sony has to dump them now. Too awkward.
It's not a surprise they fired him as executive producer. It's only surprising it took them this long. I can't imagine they wont air his hosting episodes. They have the third highest winning regular season champ on right now, so people will want to see how he is doing. Plus they spent all the money producing these episodes, so i doubt they will want to just waste them.

no reason not to air these. The general population doesn’t give a shot about Mike Richards or know anything going on. This is yet again another stupid ass thing where they bow down to a vocal minority. No one gives a shit.
It would be a microdrop in the bucket for Sony to pay everyone on Jeopardy for the unaired episodes their promised amounts. Not an issue

That said, I mostly agree with Gizmo, it really isn't an issue if they air. It's not like Richards is a rapist or child molestor. Nobody is going to be traumatized to see him host again for one week. It might look bad, but not airing those episodes might be worse. Nobody is going to give Jeopardy grief for airing these filmed episodes with a disclaimer in front.
People cared deeply that Richards was essentially handed the permanent job without merit. They don't care if he appeared as a guest host for a week.

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

So it makes sense to me that if they determined he's too toxic to host then he's too toxic to be executive producer.

Having said that.. this cancel culture is stupid. I've no doubt we'll look back on this and wonder why the hell we let every little thing someone did define who they are. But I guess people will just shrug and said "Eh well that's how it was back then."

It would be nice if we could start growing up again.

Reading the articles, apparently it was the staff calling for his resignation. But I do tend to agree, people flip out about very very trivial things these days and try to turn mole hill into a mountain.

Richards chose....poooooorly. Should have laid low. Gotta read the room, particularly in this day and age.

I never saw him host.

I'll take "People who should have been happy with the cushy job they had instead of getting greedy and trying to have it all" for $500, Alex.

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

Unrelated to the Richardson discussion but I have to wonder if the new Jeopardy will be like the Price is Right where Drew still occasionally has people respond with "Bob" where whoever gets the gig is occasionally called Alex.

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

Well, they introduce him as the host. So there's no editing of that portion of the show to call him a guest host.
Spoiler:
Three days in, and Mat Amodio is still the champ. Today he becomes the third highest consecutive game winner in the show's history in addition to his previous record of the third highest dollar winner during regular season. Not that he's in third place, he has a long stretch to break and of the current top two consecutive game winners and regular season money winners.

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

Your latest Jeopardy hosting update

I saw Jennings on another game show on ABC called "The Chase" He was some kind of king of knowledge who was competing against the regular guys.

Yeah I've never watched The Chase. I just happened to channel surf by it and noticed Jennings. I watched about 15 minutes of it.

I'm good with Bialik and Jennings sharing host duties.

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

It’s hard to imagine how they could have fucked up this search any worse than they already have. At this point I think they just went with the safe, if somewhat boring, choices.

That is until we find out Jennings is a child molester or puts pineapple on his pizza or something. Then they can bring in LeVar Burton.

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

You know, watching him again (and I had this same opinion the first time too), Richards is actually a pretty good host, aside from being a pretty generic white guy. Obviously his gross behavior and underhandedness behind the scenes is disqualifying.

I watched all the guest hosts, and Burton was objectively the worst, with all the flubs and nervousness and dead air pauses. I was surprised, but I would have ranked him my last choice amongst the guest hosts.

I never saw Richards' previous go-around, but I agree.

Re: Jeopardy! Discussion

I thought the same thing his first go round. I was kind of thinking who the hell is this guy and why is he hosting. Oh he's the producer that's convenient. But then he was actually good. Good delivery and seemed sincere. Guess that was all a lie. Now I wonder if the entire premise of him hosting, that they couldn't find anybody because of the pandemic, was all a lie as well.

He always seemed like the sleazy corporate executive type that works for retail companies.

That's most gameshow hosts.

Trebek was kind of an outsider in that regard, where he felt like your favorite teacher.

There was some reporting about how he was manipulating the whole process to point to him as the host, so I'm sure that weak excuse about how he "had" to step in and guest host was just part of his plan.

These decisions were so much easier before social media. Now everyone and their mother throws in their two cents on the selection, producing a weird sort of pressure.
