Yeah I think the most they ever admitted that they had planned out was the final shot of the show.

I liked the ending. My only really disappointing episode was the goofy island gods flashback episode. When I rewatch it I'm going to skip right over that one. Just like I do with the Bai Ling episode of Angel.

You mean you don't skip over the Bai Ling episode of Lost?

I just don't understand why some people like to try to call them out for making things up as they went along, Vince Gilligan and his writers made Breaking Bad up as they went along. Of course Gilligan and company executed way better at this strategy.

Most annoying for me is the people that watched the whole way through and think everyone was dead the whole time.

I still have Lost as one of my favorite shows of all time, I wonder how things would have gone if there was not the "flash sideways" world.

"Making it up as you go along" is not necessarily a bad strategy -- it can keep a show grounded in reality (that is how life happens!). The problem is when "making it up" gets sloppy and leads to ignoring the established past happenings and character behaviors.

There will probably never be a show like Lost ever again

Yes the last season was pretty bad and the ending isn't what everyone wanted but it was an amazingly entertaining tv show (specially if you watched it while it aired) and the series finale is pretty good

I've watched every season probably 5 or 6 times now

There's a huge difference between these two shows though. From episode 1, LOST introduced one mystery after another, teasing the viewer to try and solve them with online bonuses, etc. And show after show, they made the mystery deeper, adding more mysterious items that they encouraged the viewers to try and explain.

In Breaking Bad, there were very few true mysteries, and the secrets that came up were all revealed when the writers felt it was time--and they took great care to make sure all secrets were revealed and dealt with by the finale.

The LOST writers just seemed to finally get to the point where they threw up their hands and said, "Meh, who cares about the mysteries? Let's pretend they don't need explaining after all." And the problem was, they had created a culture where everyone cared very much.

Well said juryduty. Breaking Bad was very linear and only has a couple of possible outcomes. Lost was all about introducing something new week after week until the show collapsed under it's own weight.

The biggest kicker was the "we need exactly 16 episodes to finish the story" and proceed to give us season 6. I'm still waiting on those 16 episodes.

So a thread about a way of watching LOST differently than aired turns into a tiresome retread of I hate the finale, and then a Breaking Bad is better than LOST potential fanboi fight enters the fray. Sheesh.

No, Breaking Bad is the superior show. It's the best show of the two. Even a hardcore Lost fan will admit that.

That doesn't mean that Lost can't be your favorite show.

In other words, thread crapping.

Breaking Bad shouldn't even but mentioned in a thread about Lost. It's like comparing Michael Jordan to Spud Webb.

No.

A musical comparison is better. Lost is Madonna, BB is whatever artist from the 80s you think is the best.

Even an ambiguous fade to black that clarified nothing about the island or the people on it would have been preferable to the nonsense we got in the last season. At least then it would always be a mystery and fans would write out theories for years and years as more and more people watched the show to see what was up. Instead it's pretty much a joke.

Ha, for a good read, go back and see our real time reactions to the ending:

Thank you. If even fans hated the end of the series I can't imagine how bad it must have been because I think the show was awful from the beginning. After being strong-armed into trying it from the beginning on DVD by some well meaning visiting relatives I couldn't force myself to continue past the first half season. I tried, thinking I must be missing something, but I wasn't. It wasn't comically bad like "Under the Dome," but just plain every day bad.

I would have said Ralph Sampson (so much greatness early in his career but fizzled out badly).

For five seasons, Lost was the greatest serialized mystery in the history of the medium. Breaking Bad wasn't even the best show on television when it was airing.

Jack Shephard: Are you real?
Christian Shephard: I sure hope so. Yeah, I'm real. You're real. Everything that's happened to you is real. All those people in the church, they're all real too.
Jack Shephard: No. They're all... They're all dead. I'm dead. You're dead.
Christian Shephard: Everyone dies sometime, kiddo. Some of them before you, some... long after you.
Jack Shephard: But why are they all here now?
Christian Shephard: Well, there is no "now", here.
Jack Shephard: Where are we, Dad?
Christian Shephard: This is a place that you... that you all made together so that you could find one another. The most important part of your life was the time that you spent with these people on that island. That's why all of you are here. Nobody does it alone, Jack. You needed all of them, and they needed you.
Jack Shephard: For what?
Christian Shephard: To remember. And to... let go.
Jack Shephard: Kate... She said we were leaving.
Christian Shephard: Not leaving. No. Moving on.
Jack Shephard: Where are we going?
Christian Shephard: Let's go find out.

(I do feel bad about bringing Breaking Bad into this)

So when did they die?
