Re: Game of Thrones -- "The Night Lands" -- 4/08/12
Just saw this tonight.
Enjoyed this alot more than the premiere. I guess I had a little trouble concentrating and getting all the characters in order.
Tyrion was awesome. Loved how commanding he was and how he put Cersei in place. Lena Headey does such a good job making her an unlikeable bitch.
to no Joffrey this episode. I can only handle that piece of shit in small doses.
The chick that Theon Greyjoy banged on the ship has some disgusting boobs.
This show has so many characters that it's really hard to keep track who is who. Can someone refresh my memory on who Theon is. What is his relation to the Lannisters and Starks? Is he a new character this season? For some reason I don't remember him from season 1.
On that final scene, did Jon Snow interrupt some kind of ritual with that baby?

Theon Greyjoy was seen quite a bit in season one. He was there when Ned and company found the dire wolf pups in the first episode. He also spent quite a bit of time banging Ros the whore. He also attempted to sexually assault Osha the wildling girl who helps care for Bran.
Theon is from the Iron Islands, and the son of Balon Greyjoy, the Lord of said islands. At some point before the series began, the Iron Islands attempted a rebellion against Westros and they were put down by King Robert Baratheon and Ned Stark. The only surviving son, Theon Greyjoy, was sent to Westros as collateral.

Yeah, when I first saw Season 1, I thought Theon was a brother or a cousin because he was with the Starks so much. Only on re-watching Season 1 did I realize in little drops of dialogue here and there that he wasn't even related to the Starks and was only working for them for some reason (which this season is now explaining).

A viewer's guide really helps with this show. I don't have one to provide, but I had no qualms about consulting them during season 1 when I didn't remember characters or relationships.

3. I thought they handled the dismissal of Slynt well. The whole subplot of him being sent off to Harrenhall as laid out in the books would be too hard to explain in the show. Also, the actor playing him played a very subtle kind of scumbag monster. Nice scene.
5. Liam Cunningham is my favorite addition this year, he's really excellent at Davos Seaworth. Also, the Lysian pirate he's negotiating with deftly stole the scene.

Also, why does Robb need ships to take Kings Landing? I didn't quite understand this point.

I need a refresher (and to watch the show again from Episode 1 on, which I'm gonna do), but...who is Slynt? Also, who is Davos and what is his relevance to the story? Same question for the pirate.

Davos Seaworth is Stannis Baratheon's trusted smuggler. He's fiercely loyal.
The pirate (Salladhor Saan) is from the east and has known Davos for a long time. Stannis needs a fleet to move from Dragonstone to assault King's Landing.
Robb needs ships because he's coming from the east (riverlands) and he needs Theon and Balon Greyjoy to attack Casterly Rock (not King's Landing) from the western sea.
Get a map, you'll need it more and more

How does Renly have a 100k army? It boggles my mind that he would have the largest army of all?

Just because the viewer doesn't know the specifics doesn't mean the characters don't. They're pretty well-connected when it comes to the movements of their enemies.

Slynt is the former commander of the City Watch. He betrayed Ned in Season 1 to his capture. He lead the purge of Robert's bastards. This was all in the scene where Tyrion dismisses him for being bought and untrustworthy. He gave him lordship of a nearby keep.

OK, so I'm definitely confused with Robb now -
#1.) Why does he need the Greyjoy's to attack Casterly Rock? I'm not even familiar with what Casterly Rock is?
#2.) He's coming from the east? But isn't King's Landing southeast to Winterfell? See, I'm at work and don't have the Blu-Ray map with me, and I guess I'm confused about where Robb is/what he's trying to do, and so on.

Robb isn't marching on King's Landing. He's fighting Tywin Lannister (Jaime, Cersei, and Tyrion's dad) in the riverlands. Casterly Rock is the home of the Lannisters and it lies on the west coast.

Someone remind me why Jeor Mormont, Jon Snow, and company traveled north of The Wall? Are they only looking for Benjen Stark, or something more?
Also, is Syrio Forel dead? They kind of just left that hanging. He seemed to be a significant character and it seems unusual that they would simply leave it unexplained. Last we saw him, he looked like was more than capable of handling the couple of guards who were pursuing Arya. I heard a rumor...potential spoiler

Thanks. I recognized all these characters, just didn't yet know them by name. Yoren's also the one who smuggled Arya out and cut her hair, yes?

And where is this army? I would have thought Renly's army would have been Robert's, and thus now belong to Joffrey?

Spoiler:
2) Remember when Ghost found the arm of a fellow Black Brother and they brought dead bodies home that rose up and attacked Mormont in his chambers? Plus there's the Mance problem and the wildlings gathering. There's more than just Benjen Stark on their minds.
3) These stories are written from the POV of very specific people. The reason you don't know what happened to Syrio is that Arya didn't know what happened to Syrio.

Joffrey's army is made up of the bannermen to Casterly Rock. King's Landing doesn't really have many bannermen, they have a few thousand Gold cloaks and would presumably conscript the various peasants living on the surrounding lands if need be, but there isn't much of an army to speak of.
The Night's Watch is looking for Benjen Stark, but they are really on a scouting mission to find out what's going on with the Others, the dead rising, and why the wildling villages are all deserted.

The way things work in this land is that each of the seven kingdoms has a castle and then surrounding lands that they protect and whose citizens are sworn bannerman to their liege lord. Renly's army was Robert's army because Robert gave Storm's End (the family castle) to him and gave Dragonstone to Stannis. Stannis' small army is made up of the bannermen to Dragonstone and other men loyal to him. He's miffed that his younger brother gets the army that should be rightfully his.
